Yes, thank you everyone. Hopefully, Mr. O’Donoghue will be kind enough to come forward on his own and tell everybody what happened. It’d certainly be wiser for him to do that, than to let the public discuss it on their own. That just starts speculation, which turns into rumors, and I’d really hate to see that happen. It will if he doesn’t nip this in the bud. Given the way people are, I’m almost expecting to start seeing people throwing out things all the way from cancer, to who knows what. I read another site this morning where somebody was talking about Lymes Disease. Based on what? Come on, people! I really don’t want to see this happen to him. He’s the one in control here, though. When answers aren’t given people will try to come up with them on their own, and so an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Well, no, the rumors are perpetuated by fans who immediately start to worry if he is not seen for any prolonged amount of time no matter the fact certain fans starting speculating everything under the sun. It seems that as others have mentioned a little common sense and perspective is needed. He’s never really discussed too much about his working so it would stand to reason that some quiet time could be that he’s spending time with his wife, taking bit of a rest etc.
His business is his own. He should not feel obligated to discuss any more then what he feels comfortable or necessary. I would have thought that fans would be respectful of his wishes, and actually think more positively rather than actually speculating all of the doom-and-gloom which seems to be much too negative. Furthermore, I would hope that they actually want this to be false rather than having their moment of “I called it!” which is disturbing.
You said “Based on what? Come on, people!” and that is exactly that. The onus is on fans of Hook (the ones speculating and are always going “omg is his character dead” etc) to stop and relax. It’s becoming a bit ridiculous that the poor man cannot make simple comments (Hook leaving the building), stay relatively quiet on Twitter without fans starting to spazz out.
If fans hear something about a possible injury or whatnot why not simply first assume it is speculation but instead of spiraling into assuming his character was killed off, he is suffering from something really horrible simply state to him that you heard some rumors, hope they are not true but in the least sending some positiveness since everyone needs some positive vibes sent their way. The way I figure let’s say he did sprain an ankle I think he’d appreciate a “Heard you sprained your ankle, hoping you get better soon, sending some positive thoughts your way” etc.
I feel sorry for him. 😕

You’re absolutely right, however, Colin can come out and say he’s fine, not to worry, and put this to bed….or he can do/say nothing. His choice. One result invites the other. It’s by human nature that every mystery must be solved. That’s why he’d be well served to not allow one. I’ve seen in the media where so many other famous people have been so mistreated by rumors born of speculation. Some well based, and some just plain rediculous. In either case, it isn’t fair, but in every case, the conditions exist. Should he have to take this bull by the horns to say anything? No. Does he have to disclose every detail? No. Would it be wiser for him be proactive enough to say something, rather than nothing? You can bet on it. If it doesn’t do him service now, it will for him later. One action will most certainly serve him more than another. He’s in the public eye, and his house is glass. It’s why many famous people don’t do social media. It’s also why some famous people had a few good successes, and decided to leave show business because they realized their houses turned to glass when they decided they wanted this career, and didn’t like the package deal. Welcome to show business. It’s the nature of the beast and contrary to the lessons many of our kids are learning these days, you don’t get to redefine the conditions of your environment because you don’t like them.
Is it right that things are this way? No! Absolutely not! Will it ever change? For long as there is hatred in this world, for long as people don’t care about others, for long as people are too selfish to care about how/what they do/don’t do or say impacts another person, for long as we are indifferent to others around us; even those we may never meet, for long as people try to find more trouble in others so they don’t have to look at their own imperfections, and for long as evil exists, this will never change. It’s created by the result of our collective human nature. Very much a shame. Very much the truth. Very much the reality.

I do too. I’ve been on twitter though, and he is getting lots of positive vibes. Yes, there are some negative ones too but there are plenty of people sending him all kinds of get well wishes. Some of us are also praying for him.

The only middle ground I can think of since it seems Colin is not comfortable with a public relationship with his fans (save for specific place and times) is that his “people” talk for him about any rumor that is circulating. However I do think that some fans need to respect how he chooses to use the social media he is on. It seems his twitter account is more about retweeting artwork and the like rather than actually having one on one tweets with fans. I know some use their twitter to talk about things they are doing (Lauren Graham was recently advertising her book for instance) or something along those lines. (:
I just hate the idea that because someone is a popular actor they somehow cannot be granted the right to choose how much privacy is disclosed because of something I (or fans in general) wants.

If he is ok with receiving love and affection from adoring fans, then I think he should be okay with at the very least, reassuring of his well being. It doesn’t mean he has to reveal all. Having a private life doesn’t mean he should exploit others by taking disregarding the feelings and affections of others. It just takes total advantage. That’s a an issue for me. Disagree all you want to, I won’t change my mind about it.
February 1, 2013 at 4:36 am #171157PheeParticipantHe doesn’t owe anyone any explanation about anything. Perhaps he says nothing about it because there’s nothing to say. And if he makes a big deal about it, then more people, other than the small group of people who are currently riled up about it, see it and jump on the “Wait, there were rumours about something being wrong with him?” bandwagon and the whole thing gets blown way out of proportion and becomes a big, public, ongoing thing, which frankly, isn’t worth the stress of dealing with. If he’s said nothing, I’d assume it’s because there’s nothing to be said, and he’s probably hoping that whatever rumour mill is running, it’ll wear itself out and people will get over it sooner rather than later and move on.

We will have to agree to disagree. Simply because I don’t understand your perception or path you are coming from as a fan. Though thank you for your input and showing your perspective. 😀
That said this is where I am coming from: I suppose it could be that I grew up where the fourth wall was so firmly in place that we had to take what we could get. With the ease of communication I can see why fans want to see more interaction.
I guess I am not seeing how his not divulging his life is exploiting you. I personally had thought his recognizing the artwork, saying hi to fans (when they ask for a retweet), and I think he did say thank you for the birthday wishes was interaction and recognition in itself.
It just feels worrisome to me in my limited understanding that any fan is so invested to the point that they feel indignant, exploited (not sure what other words to say here) if their favorite actor does not act in a way that they would like to see. From what I have seen he’s never been froward with any one fan he is simply a little more tight lipped. So at least he is a respectful tight-lipped actor. 😛
Perhaps as time goes on he might use twitter a bit more that his fans want him to use it. It’s just for me as long as we’re all respectful that’s what matters. Because you know.. if fans are too forceful, aggressive whatever he could simply do a Moffat and delete his twitter. Then were does that leave us? I wanted to end my post with a hook pun but could only think of hookless..
🙁

This! From what I’ve seen of his tweets, he seems lovely and genuinely appreciative of his fans. It’s sweet of him to RT the pics people send him, to acknowledge that he’s seen it. A tweet like that can make a fan’s day. In the last day, he’s wished 6 people Happy Birthday, (which he doesn’t have to do at all) and also said “Good evening twitter! Hope everyone is well. Thanks for the tweets. #Hookers You guys are the best.” I dunno how anyone can say that he never gives anything back to the fans. Unless it’s just someone being bitter because they personally haven’t ever been acknowledged?
It’s just for me as long as we’re all respectful that’s what matters.
Absolutely. And part of that is recognising that just because someone’s job puts them in the public eye, that doesn’t mean we own them and it doesn’t mean they owe us complete access to their every thought and action.
