It also worries me that this story structure of one villain per half season will lead them to burn through Disney/fairy tales villains very quickly. In three seasons and a spin-off we already got Rumplestiltskin, the Evil Queen, Maleficent, Gaston (lol!), Hansel and Gretel’s Blind Witch, the Queen of Hearts, Captain Hook, Jack the Giant Killer, the Pied Piper, the Red Queen and Jafar. When they had to change a character, Peter Pan, who’s usually portrayed as a hero into a villain, you have to wonder how many of them they can still play with. Of the big ones, to my knowledge, we still have Morgana and both the Wicked Witches of OZ to meet, but after those who comes next? I have no idea, and I don’t like it.
l’s advocate, if they HAD gone the route of Pandora’s box over killing PP, the questions of “will we ever see Pan again?” “Will someone open the box?” “Can pan ever get out himself?” “Why haven’t we heard about the box?” will never stop. And when the show ends in a year or two, if those questions are never revisited fans will never stop asking (I’m looking at you LOST).
So, this isn’t meant to be callous, but from a storytelling perspective, death is cleaner because it seems to be absolute.
Rebecca Mader’s villain could’ve retrieved the box and taken Pan as an ally for season 3B. 🙂

There are plenty of villains outside of Disney or western fairy tales. I, for one, would love to get some more international type villains. Explore stories that Disney hasn’t touched, from other parts of the world.

I’m not saying there weren’t other options lol. And that sounds like a terrific fan fic idea, once we finally see Mader and get a feel for her. But I’m betting Mader’s WWW is going to be a force unto herself.
I’ll be sad to see the end of Robbie Kay’s excellent acting but I will be happy if they wrap up the Pan arc in the finale. I don’t want things to drag on incessantly. Smart storytelling, not syndication profit margins please (Supernatural take note!)
