Dr. Jeckyll / Mr. Hyde!!
Think about it! Doctor by day, womanizer by night!
The only other theory I had was Merlin. That would fit with the “not my prince” comment.

I agree that Jeckyll/hyde is a fun and interesting theory the only problem is that there is not much to back it up. The evidence for Dr. Frankenstein seems to be piling up by the minute.
Go team Franky! 😉

I don’t necessarily think it means he’s not from FTL though, because do we really expect Charming to know EVERY person who lived in FTL? Perhaps Whale’s real persona was a recluse, so not many people saw him. Or maybe he was in a different form, so no one recognises him now.
It’s gonna be such a relief when they finally reveal who this guy is. All the theories about him do my head in. 😆

That’s what I thought at first, but then I realized, how would Whale know that Charming was a prince if he wasn’t from FTL. I think he was just saying that he did not bow to him. There are many kingdoms in FTL.
I just came up with a theory, thanks to Phee’s comments.Perhaps Whale’s real persona was a recluse, so not many people saw him. Or maybe he was in a different form, so no one recognises him now.
We have heard that the fairy tale characters are their opposites in Storybrooke. We also know that if characters took on a different form in FTL (like Jiminy) then they are in their human form in Storybrooke unless they were specifically trapped in a certain form like Maleficent. Maybe the characters don’t recognize him because he was in a different form. I don’t think he was an animal. I think he might be some type of creepy hermit magic man type character. I also think that Regina was the one to change his form. I think at one point he was an attractive man who had everything going for him and Regina took that all away and turned him into an ugly man-like creature of some sort. maybe a troll. but a troll that has some sort of power like hermits in fairy tales have. I’m thinking maybe like the bridgekeeper in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I don’t mean to say he is that character, but rather a character of that sort. I need help with this theory to connect it to an actual fairy tale character and to make connections to the name whale. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dr. Whale being a prince or some sort of ruler would be a great twist. I know him being the Wizard of Oz is a popular theory. So, maybe that’s who he is. Maybe he has a hard time bowing down to another king when he himself is a king.
MAYBE he is the PRINCE & the PAUPER….

October 6, 2012 at 1:08 am #155621fairy dustParticipantThey have a way of combining things into one character. Perhaps he is the Prince of Frontland, and the prince of Frontland is Dr. Frankenstein. There are many hints to Dr. Whale being the Dr. Frankenstein character, pictures on Henry’s bedroom wall, the windmill, the dog Ajax, even David’s buzz (flat top) hair cut. The standing fish backstage at the courthouse are called Lucy (Luce) in heraldry. Frankenstein has been called the Lucy (proto human) of science fiction. It would be interesting if he was Dr. Frankenstein and also tied in with Frontland. The Frontland episode (Desperate Souls) was filled with heraldry (coat of arms) symbols.
Here is a link to the symbol on the banner in the Duke of Frontlands castle. http://www7b.biglobe.ne.jp/~bprince/hr/foxdavies/fdguide15.htm

This goes along with Daniel’s theory that he’s Frankenstein, or maybe Dr. Frankenstein himself. In the story, someone led a riot on Frankenstein’s castle to stop him from making his monster. Riots are also very common when people are generally unhappy, but’s a really close parallel.
October 7, 2012 at 2:02 pm #155819ceegeParticipantI’m thinking about Captain Ahab from Moby Dick – Dr. Whale led the people for revenge like Ahab did with the boat. Plus, as an American, Ahab would not recognize a Prince’s authority over him.
October 7, 2012 at 10:23 pm #155874nightreaderParticipantWhile rewatching the scene where Whale says Charming isn’t his prince I suddenly got an idea: What if Whale served the real prince James? Maybe they were even friends and he dislikes Charming for taking his place… or something? Just a thought I had. What do you think?
I also remember hearing a theory once that he’s Bluebeard, based off the womanizing thing. Not a theory I follow myself but, again, it’s food for thought.

The Pied Piper
are other characters that might be related to Dr Whale…. especially since the Giant is coming.
