This is just speculation and not based on any knowledge of the episode. The theory that Grumpy’s name used to be Dreamy and that the whole incident about being forced to work in the mines and trying to buy a diamond for a ring for his girl was as Grumpy said it’s what made him Grumpy. So the theory would be that before he was Grumpy he was Dreamy.
[adrotate group="5"]And a lot of the dwarfs names end in “y” like Sleepy and Dopey and Stealthy so Dreamy sounds like a dwarfs name. So maybe Grumpy was Dreamy before and that when everything went wrong for him that was what made him Grumpy. Something about that dialogue with Snow, which was such a great scene, seems weighted and would be interesting in light of the idea that Grumpy may not have always been called Grumpy.

Do you know the graphic novel Sandman by Neil Gaiman? There’s a similar situation. One of the characters is called Delirium, but before she was that, she was Delight. Something awful happened to her to change to Delirium.

The diamond mines part ties into Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I don’t think he was forced into working in the diamond mines, it was just his job.

Maybe, we don’t actually hear the names if the dwarfs in previous episodes, perhaps sleepy is dreamy.
That theory is correct. There is a sneak peek video on YouTube and the dwarves names appeared when they grabbed ax/hammers. When grumpy grabbed his is said “Dreamy”.
