It is almost certain that the name Leroy is a nod to the character Leroy, in Jack Kerouac’s novella, “The Subterraneans.” Subterraneans is about a forbidden romance between a white man and an African-American woman and in this episode, Dreamy, the miner, has a forbidden relationship with Nova, the fairy.
The real life Neal Cassady was the identity behind the Leroy character in Kerouac’s novella. Various writers from the Beat Generation used the real life Neal Cassady as the basis for their semi-fictional characters. This means we actually have two characters on Once Upon a Time who have a connection with the real life Neal Cassady…obviously the Mystery Man of New York who is named Neal Cassidy and Leroy/Grumpy (formerly Dreamy), the miner (get it…he’s a subterranean who works underground.)
The episode, Dreamy, has a similar story-line to the Emma/Neal romance. After falling in love, August Booth/Pinnochio, convinces Neal Cassidy that he needs to end his relationship with Emma. August convinces Neal that he will keep Emma from her destiny. In the Dreamy episode, the Blue Fairy and Bossy convince Dreamy to end his relationship with Nova. They convince him that he would keep Nova from her destiny as a fairy.
There are many subtle connections between the character of Neal and Leroy. Neal has a dream catcher/fly paper for bad dreams, and Leroy’s real name was Dreamy. When Emma meets Neal she has a real Tinkerbell sort of look to her…Dreamy was in love with a fairy. Dreamy works underground in a mine that has a railway running through it. Neal spends time under the city of New York in the Subway system…the railway underground. The real life Neal Cassady worked on the railway.
So what does that mean? When we realize that both Emma’s Neal and Dreamy/Grumpy/Leroy are based on the same real life man, Neal Cassady we can look for lots of hidden clues and lots of double-speak…conversations that have a dual meaning. One meaning for Leroy but a hidden clue to what is going to happen with Neal.
Leroy says he always wanted to have a boat and sail away. I believe this is a direct nod to Neverland…and I believe it is a clue that Emma’s Neal is Peter Pan…but I believe it goes further than that. I believe that it is very possible that Peter has become a pirate. We shall see…he may even have memory problems.
I believe the glitter that drops on Leroy’s head is a hint to New Year’s Eve in Time’s Square…where I believe we will find Emma’s Neal. Perhaps the confetti that falls on New Year’s eve has a wish or a dream written on it by Neal (at the Wishing Wall of Hopes and Dreams.) Just like Dreamy became Grumpy…I believe Neal has changed.
Many clues about the Mystery Man are embedded in the Leroy character. I think it is very possible that Emma’s Neal is a janitor/caretaker or some other similar position that gives him access to very valuable things. I think he is involved in some type of high dollar theft/fencing of either diamonds/jewelry/or art.
If you want some fun, go back and watch the Leroy scenes and look for double speak…there is lots of it.
One more thing…I believe that after we are finished with Season 2 we will see even more connections between this episode and Neal and Emma…including some Coney Island connections.

This is a purposeful similarity…what does it mean. I am wondering if Aurora could be a fairy who lost her wings because she fell in love with a human. It could also be a nod to Emma and Tinkerbell.

Holy Balony! You’re right 😀 I never saw those connections. Thank you so much for sharing. That’s great…
Maybe this will change peoples minds on the episode Dreamy wich lots of people hated, maybe the connection with Emma and Neals story will make people look at it with kinder eyes. I hope so, I always loved that episode. If the New York, New Years eve’s fairydust thing came true, that would be hillarious 😆 I would love that.
This also ties August futher in with the Blue fairy. They are in cahoots with eatchother, no wait August is only Blue fairy’s puppet..

Before Neal met Emma he worked as janitor in Phoenix. That was when he stole some watches. And wouldn’t be too surprised if he hasn’t changed that much and is still in some way in that business, janitor and theft as well.
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯

Great point about Neal’s janitor job and the watch theft.

I swear these writers have to be wizards….the layers they have in these stories is amazing.
