KeymasterBut, “You’re the first person in 300 years to make me believe in love,” is some serious pressure for her. “Exactly how many people am I meant to play Saviour to FFS?! It was just a kiss to me, but he’s feeling that?! And we have to live in close quarters for the foreseeable future?! Awkward much?! This is totally the last thing I need to have to deal with right now!”
Reminds me of Emma’s reaction to August in the woods in The Stranger when he said that everyone was depending on her. Emma’s response was that she can only handle Henry at the moment and that you can’t put the whole Savior thing on her. She still feels that way. She’s only somewhat accepted her role as Savior. That’s why she needed prodding to say it to the map. It still doesn’t compute in her head. And now she has someone declaring that he made her belief in the future and love. It’s too much for her. She is going to take a big time out and focus on Henry.
But you might be abandoned by someone you love. You might be faced with hard decisions in your life that’ll make or break yourself or another person. You might be stuck in a horrible dilemma one day where neither decision will be the totally right one.
without going into details this is EXACTLY what happened to me a few years ago and it destroyed me. So when Neal had to make this decision to hurt the person he loved but do it so that she could fulfill her destiny and find her HOME, I GOT IT. And that’s why I get so upset when people bring up the Tallahassee incident. If his decision was wrong, then mine was and it brings up all the grief I had over my own situation. If he’s selfish then so am I. If he’s evil, then so am I. If he should be hated, then so should I. People have got to start remembering that the reasons why we love these characters has a lot to do with our own lives and experiences and that when you tear them down it does get personal.

Participant”I won’t stop fighting for you” doesn’t mean that he’ll never let her move on (if that’s what she wants) but instead that he will always be there for her and will not make the same mistake of abandoning her again.
THIS! Before he got to NL we heard him say that he didn’t even know if he was gonna get his second chance with her, but even with that uncertainty, he still wanted to be there for her. He’s still dealing with his own personal crap too. The guy doesn’t believe himself worthy of forgiveness, love, and a happy ending, but regardless, he’s gonna suck it up and be there. He’s gonna be steadfast, he’s doing the brave thing, he’s gonna be strong enough for the both of them even if he wasn’t even strong enough for himself until very recently.
He will now show her that he can be someone she can trust and someone that will be there for her and someone she can truly rely on.
And what I was saying about Neal’s own low sense of self worth…same goes for Emma. Did you see her face when Snow was saying that she wasn’t enough? Heartbreaking doesn’t even cover it. No one’s completely been there for her in her life, no one except for Neal. And then he broke her heart, and now, when she’s been completely torn apart over that mess with her parents, (along with all the other mess), he’s gonna be there to help her pick up all the pieces he can and put her back together as much as he can, and make her believe again that she’s worth loving, just like he made her believe it once before. And eventually, she will believe in that, and the result is gonna be that their bond will be stronger than ever.
Man, now I’m all riled up and high on SF FEELS and wishing I had a Neal of my very own.

YES, EXACTLY! She went from being a Nobody to a Saviour in 5 seconds flat. From just getting herself by in life, to having the fates of all these people dumped on her shoulders. And in OUAT time, it’s only been a couple of months since she realised who she was. Girl is still overloaded and dealing with SO MUCH all at once.

*reaching across the ocean to HUG you* Please know that for all the unwarranted, hurtful comments that people throw around, there are plenty of people who understand and have compassion. I’m honestly not sure how you manage to remain Switzerland and moderate the forum sometimes. You must have a strong will to be able to handle it some days.
ETA: do you think the puppy would me borrow his human for a hug? That pic is so unbearably adorable, (and I’m not even a dog person)!!!

Yes! To the viewer Manhattan was a long time ago and A Land Without Magic/Broken even longer but not to Emma! To Emma she it has only been a matter of maybe three months (Keb….halp) since she: fought a dragon, learned her parents were fairy tale characters, got transported to another realms, fought Ogres, met a giant, got transported home, was reunited with Neal, learned her son was Rumple’s grandson, had to fight off an evil witch lady and her daughter, worry about strangers finding SB. And more to the point it was been a week since: SB was almost destroyed, GOAT kidnapped Henry, Neal “died” Emma was transported to another realm, almost died via drowning, met mermaids, declared herself leader, played mind games with Pan, declared herself an orphan, met a fairy, found Bae’s cave of feelings, learned her father almost died, kissed a pirate, realized her son was losing hope and then learned Neal was alive!
I said this somewhere but the fact that Emma just hasn’t sat down in the middle of the jungle and become comatose is remarkable.

ParticipantYeah, 3 months tops. S2 came out to about 40 days even with my trying to pad it as much as possible. It’s been a week in Neverland.

ParticipantUnder different circumstances, Hook’s admission could have been incredibly romantic, but in these circumstances, and with Emma’s state of mind right now, not so much. He doesn’t know her like Neal does though, so I don’t hate him for saying it, I honestly felt really bad for him because his desperate heart was pretty much breaking right in front of my eyes.
I couldn’t help but feel empathy for Hook when he made that confession. He was admitting his secret that Emma has helped him realize he could move on from his first love and his own sense of revenge. Yet, from Emma’s perspective, she’s astonished that her kiss could have that kind of drastic effect on this man after so short a time. I guess that is just the kind of effect that Emma has on people, like Graham, for instance. Kissing Emma broke Graham’s cruse not because he and Emma had true love but because Emma is True Love. Because she embodies True Love, the most powerful magic of all, she is very compelling to people. It’s why so many fans ship Emma with so many people. She’s just magnetic and one heck of a woman.
I still think that Hook’s admission does not mean that Emma is his only shot at finding love again; it’s more like she reminds him he could now have hope for a future other than revenge. Emma was once a loner, much like himself, who was afraid of putting other people ahead of her own self interests. She is now learning to put others before herself, to be a hero, which is just like Hook hopes to be able to do. He doesn’t just want to live for his own self gain anymore, but rather, wants to again be a man of honor he once was before he ever became a pirate. Hook’s secret is that he really wants to be the heroic type. In 2×22 Emma challenges Hook not just to look out for himself anymore:
Emma: You and I, we understand each other. Look out for yourself and you’ll never get hurt, right?
Hook: Worked quite well for me.
Emma: Yeah, until the day that it doesn’t. We’re doing this. It might be stupid, it might be crazy, but we’re going it. So, you can join us, and be apart of something, or you can do what you do best, and be alone.
Hook: Quite passionate, Swan. Why are you really doing this?
Emma: That kid just lost his father today. I’m not letting him lose a mother, too.
Hook: His father? Who’s Henry’s father?
Emma: Neal.
Hook: Baelfire?
Emma: Yeah.Emma and Hook have an ability to understand each other, because they’ve lived similar lives. Hook was a pirate and Emma was a car thief. As a de facto orphan, Emma only looked out for herself after Neal left, just as Hook only cared about himself after he lost his brother then Milha. So, it’s completely understandable that Emma would help inspire Hook to help her find her son. And yet, it’s not really just about Emma, is it? Since what follows Emma’s plea for Hook’s assistance is the real clincher for Hook. The father of Emma’s son is none other than, Neal, aka Baelfire, the boy who was like a son to Hook. Hook discovering that Henry was Neal’s boy is really what made him turn around since the satchel he’d given Emma was really empty. So it wasn’t just Emma’s words which inspired him, since he was still trying to screw her over at that point. He’d been trying to make a clean get-away to save his own neck until he realized he was betraying the memory of Baelfire, and then Emma’s words hit home for him. So, he’s not just in Neverland for Emma. He’s also there for Neal, which is why he was so quick to tell Snow and David about Neal being alive. Hook wanted to save Neal, not just to impress Emma, but because he loves Bae like a son.
I think she does have a close relationship with Hook. They definitely have an understanding and a connection. But I still think Neal and Emma have a closer one. Sometimes they don’t even have to see each other or look at each other and they still know what the other is thinking or doing. They understand each other so well that they just know how the other will react or act in a situation. We don’t see all the intimate looks and the closeness yet because Emma is still afraid. She still think that Neal will leave her again. She doesn’t want to get close again to be left and abandoned again by Neal. But once he shows her that he will be there and can be reliable and unwavering in his vow to fight for her, we will see them start to get closer again.
Jennifer Morrison has said that Hook reminds Emma of Neal. To me, the reason that Hook and Emma understand each so well is because Emma and Neal first really understood each other. If Hook reminds Emma of Neal so much then it stands to reason that is because Emma was thinking of her past relationship with Neal. Neal and Emma are both orphans from the EF who grew up without parents and who both had to steal just to survive. Neal taught Emma never to break and enter without an escape plan. When Emma saw the marks on the wall of Bae’s cave she immediately understood that he’d stopped counting the day because he’d lost hope, just as she had in the foster care system.
I guess what frustrates me the most is when Neal-haters keep on saying that he is taking Emma’s choice away and choosing for her and forcing her to be with him because he will never let her go and something like that. But when did he say that she had to be with him? I didn’t hear that at all. I did hear him saying that he was going to force his love on her. What I heard was that he was going to be there for her no matter what now. He’s made mistakes in the past and gave up on her and tried to move on. But this time he isn’t afraid of rejection or of being hurt, he’s past that now and just wants her to know that he will always be there for her no matter what. ”I won’t stop fighting for you” doesn’t mean that he’ll never let her move on (if that’s what she wants) but instead that he will always be there for her and will not make the same mistake of abandoning her again.
I couldn’t agree more. Neal is just letting Emma know what her options are by telling her he’s never going to stop fighting for her. Telling her he’ll be there for her is laying the foundation to rebuild trust. If Emma wants to let him back in, then she will and that would be her choice. If not, then I’m sure Neal would learn to respect her wishes. He’s not about to force anything. He’s just letting his intuitions be known, just as Hook was letting his intentions be known. The rules of magic state that magic cannot cause anyone to fall in love, since to do so would go against the notion that for love to be real, it must be freely given. It’s for Emma alone to decide which man, if either, she wants to be with at the end. I just predict that Emma is going to face more of her past while in NL, and in so doing, rediscover a lot about herself so that she can begin down that hard path of realizing her hurt does not define her, that she can move past the pain to rediscover the love and joy that could be hers with her family, with Neal, if only she’d be brave enough to learn to trust that love can overcome fear of rejection.

"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 6, 2013 at 11:59 am #221469Slurpeez
ParticipantI read this tweet from Adam from today.
Adam and Eddy wrote in the character of Hook with an intended plan. Does that include making Hook Rumple’s enemy, Bae’s quasi step-father or Emma’s suitor? While I think the answer is yes to all three of those options, to say that is the entirety of his role would be to make him a character of secondary importance to the other main characters. So, I think that Adam and Eddy introduced Hook with an even bigger purpose. Hook’s relationship to Peter Pan is so central to the original story, which is Eddy’s favorite childhood tale, that I think Hook has been set up to play an overall heroic role the final battle against Peter Pan.
Hook doesn’t just desire to be loved by Emma. I think his desire also includes reclaiming his sense honor, to be able to put others first, and to act heroically. After being a “villain” who only looks out for himself for so long, he secretly desires to live, or even be willing to die, for the sake of others. His own sake of honor is at stake if he chooses to come between his son figure and Emma. It’s going to be a tough, inner struggle, but learning to step aside and not fight for a person’s desire can be honorable too. Hook was in full-on pirate mode when he chose to “fight” for Milha, seducing an already married woman, to take her away from her small child. In that case, fighting for what Hook wanted was arguably the dishonorable thing to do and was not in “good form” since he was a pirate who took what he wanted, no matter the personal cost to Rumple or Bae. True, Milha was only too happy to get away, but I think Hook has always felt guilty about taking a mother away from a small child. He said as much to young Baelfire in 2×22 when he said Milha had always felt bad and that they’d always intended to return for Bae. Hook was trying to make amends, or sorts, by offering to let him and Bae be like a family. Now, Hook has the opportunity once more to try and make it up to his son figure, Neal, by allowing Emma enough space to decide whether she even wants a second chance with Neal. Hook can do the honorable thing once more, without expecting anything for himself. That is a what a true man of honor would do, and in my esteem, would mean he really loves her and Neal as a father. And if Emma chooses Hook after he lets her go, then it would mean she freely and earnestly loves Hook, too. If not, then it will be clear that Emma and Neal were always meant to be. And then Hook could feel proud of himself knowing he chose the harder path of putting others first.
