ParticipantI really, really, REALLY wish Emma could have some decent character development – not just trying to stuff it all into the finale. Also, after thinking back at something, I just realized…
THE ONLY PERSON EMMA EVER SAID “I LOVE YOU” TO WAS NEAL!!!!!!!! NOT WALSH! CERTAINLY NOT HOOK! NEALFIRE. AND NOW HE HAS TO BE SHAFTED OFF THE CAST FOR FREAKING “BOLD” STORYTELLING. BOLD STORYTELLING MY BEHIND!
This weekend, when I have time (hopefully), I’m writing a small SF fanfic set during the time they spent together when Emma was 18. Current setting: the night before Henry was conceived, with Neal treating Emma to a beautiful dinner.

Someone needs to tweet this article to Adam, if it hasn’t been done so already.
But always, waiting in the wings, was a borderline obsessive Captain Hook yearning for redemption via Emma’s hootnanny. What started as a sweet crush has quickly drifted into an irritating misfire as the show repeatedly sacrifices Emma’s story to further establish Hook’s feelings for her.
The show tells a dangerous narrative with the way they’ve developed “Captain Swan.” That awful age-old one that says if a man is just determined enough he can “get the girl.” And the oddest part of this whole story is that its told not from a beleaguered Emma’s point of view, but from the yearning Hook’s.
I’m not even a hardcore feminist (though of course I believe in equality of the sexes), but I can see the sexist undertones in the way that Hook treats women in general. How many times have we heard Hook make unwanted sexual remarks towards Emma and even her mother? How many times has he mistreated women, including Emma herself?
Emma, when given the chance, seems to passionately dislike Hook. Taking every opportunity to point it out. She, mercifully, has served as the voice of the audience every time Hook’s cursed lips come up. From her point of view Captain Swan is Hook’s delusion.
Up until 3×20 Emma stood her ground. She told Hook off for trying to kidnap Henry. I applauded her strength and clarity of mind.
Hook’s viewpoint is the one romanticizing their relationship. And Charming, who stupidly sends his daughter’s magic kryptonite with her to do battle. And Zelena, who curses Hook hoping to hurt Emma. And Regina, who jealously notes their “thing” whenever she’s given half a chance. And the writers do too.
I agree that Charming insisting Hook tag along with Emma was demeaning to Emma as a woman. She doesn’t need a man to look after her. They knew Hook’s lips had been cursed to take away Emma’s powers! Why would Charming ever think it’d be a good idea for Hook to tag along with Emma? Once again, Emma gave into her father and Hook’s wishes, rather than sticking with her own instinct. Hook was a liability, “cannon fodder” in that episode. His curse drained Emma of her power! Emma is better off being a strong independent woman. She doesn’t need Hook getting in her way, nor her dad telling her what to do.
Yet, she did herself a great disservice in 3×21 and 3×22 when she finally “gave in” and let her attraction distract her from her son in the final scene. Instead of going to her son to check on him, she went and made out with
HookKillian.Emma was reduced to a sex object when she used her boobs to distract Hook in 3×21. Emma seemed to get a kick out of how attractive Hook of the past and of the present finds her. Maybe the writers are trying to spin it as “sexual empowerment” by having Emma use sex as a distraction to Past Hook, but it also means teaching girls to flaunt their bodies in suggestive ways to get what they want. It creates a double standard in which women use sexual enticement to service the desires of men for their own gain.
I suppose CSers will make the augment that Future Hook punched out Past Hook for making advances towards Emma, but even recently we’ve seen him do things with the expectation of physical rewards. Remember that CS kiss in 3×5? He saved Charming’s life but expected more than just Emma’s words of thanks, which ought to have been enough. No, Hook said, “is that all your father’s life is worth to you?” and pointed towards his lips as expectation of payment of delivery. That is in direct contrast with Neal, who told his dad to save Charming, without any sort of payment, simply becasue it was the right thing to do. No expectations of physical payment of any kind. Neal saved Henry because he loved his son, not just to get back with Emma. Hook, did so to “win the girl” and expected Emma to give him his due rewards. That is why I have a lot of issues with CS. Even recently, Hook giving up his ship prompts Emma to kiss him. I’m not saying she didn’t want to, since it seems like she did, but it still tells the tale that if a man does X, he expects physical return for his efforts.
It reduces Emma to a woman who is obviously attracted to the badboy image, but who thinks she can change him. She either dismisses the questionable things he’s done like leaving her and her mom to rot in jail in the EF and that time he nearly got them all killed in SB by working with Greg and Tamara. Oh, and remember 3×17? Emma said she was fine with Hook lying to her! He never came clean about what he did in the missing year, how he killed Blackbeard, or how he refused to help Ariel locate Eric. Hook is still keeping things form her, and Emma is letting him get away with it. That bothers me deeply.

ParticipantHopefully the writers will do a better job next season or they would lose these fans permanently.

ParticipantOne post in the tumblr. By the way the part of the glove of 322 between Neal and emma was not scripted, this was confirmed by MRJ.

In another note: Still wanted a goodbye interview by MRJ, but i guess that his statment of twiter after 315 was it. Guess that probably ABC and Writers must not want MRJ to talk, maybe he could say something that he shouldnt .

ParticipantI have the urge to tweet Adam, asking if he’d be fine with a guy like Hook being the partner of his daughter. He’d probably go off at me for having brought his kids into it, but I just don’t know how else to effectively spell it out and make him see how problematic it is that Emma did a 180 and fell for Hook. Like, you would expect that they would only want the best for their heroine, who they created, just like they’d only want the best for their actual children, who they created. But apparently it’s cool if a guy calls you dried up and useless, leaves you to die in a cage, persists with romantic attempts despite being told to back off numerous times, and spies on you through a telescope from across the road. I’d like to think that if a guy behaved that way towards Adam’s daughter, he wouldn’t exactly consider him prime son-in-law material, so why isn’t the standard the same for who Emma is in a relationship with?

ParticipantU can tell MRJ does his research and really dives into the role that is given to him. I can’t wait to see him in another meaty role. But thank goodness for Salvation coming out soon.
Not only is Nealfire is better than you so is MRJ 😀

I absolutely love that about MRJ. Just like he did research on making his Cajun accent sound more authentic on True Blood.
Also I’m pretty sure this wasn’t script either in “Manhattan”:
It really looked like a spur of the moment decision from MRJ to make that Rumple gesture. I wish he can confirm this.
OUAT deprived itself of his awesomeness… 🙁

ParticipantIt wasn’t planned. If you watch the commentary for Manhattan on the DVD, Bobby Carlyle talks about how MRJ approached him before the scene, and they hadn’t even really met before that, and asked if he should include the hand movement. Bobby encouraged him to do it. It’s great that really the first time Rumple and Neal meet was really the first time Bobby and Mikey worked together.
