I just figured out who Hook reminded me of in 307 with his attitude and behaviour. He’s Gaston from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast!
Interesting…in some ways Hook does fit that bill quite well!

PoM!! I’ve been thinking that for ages that Gaston & Hook share some DNA.
There’s a post I made up above where I said Milah wanted to adventure in the “Great wide somewhere” with Hook, but I stopped short of actually drawing the comparison since we had a Gaston. He posed no serious threat to Rumpel, but Hook did. It is deconstructed though as Hook obviously is after Emma not Belle.
He even had a stallion tale in his flashback.

Gaston was like my least favorite villain in all of Disney. I hated the way he talked to Belle, implying that because she is a woman she shouldn’t be reading and should just get married. I was five and KNEW that I would never be talked to that way. (Baby feminist RG)
I know that quite a few of my issues with Hook stem from how he treats women and being very uncomfortably reminded of how I was once treated. Like when Hook told Emma that if she really wanted to thank him for saving Charming, she should kiss him just had horrible memories of my ex telling me I needed to do things to prove that I loved him. The level of subjective interpretation for each of these characters is so wide and varied.

Its hard to get to excited because you afraid they will stab you in the heart. I’m happy yet cautious.

@RG – Thanks for sharing that personal insight. I am sorry you had to experience that kind of emotional manipulation. In a perfect world, no person would have to give what s/he wasn’t willing to do in order to be loved. In an ideal world, all people would be honored and cherished for who they are as people, and not as prizes to be won. That is one of the biggest reasons I’m rooting for Neal and Emma, because even though they didn’t grow up in a perfect world, they are managing to create their own version of a fairytale.
