@Phee Thanks for the link to the Nealfire essay.  I think that helps.  I find it funny that I think it is a roadblock to my bonding with Neal that it seems like when we should be having a big Bea moment there is always some kind of life threatening situation going on but the essay points out that Neal has his most Bae like moments when there is immement danger.  When those moments were pointed out to me they were easy to see.  I think the problem is that I get so wrapped up in the major danger that I see what Neal is doing but it doesn’t even register that it is a very Baelfire action.

I still don’t like that they haven’t had any backstory episodes besides Tallhassee to tell us what happened to him as Neal – I feel like that is a giant piece of not only his story but of the entire show that is missing, but maybe we will get that this season since they are playing up the whole “triangle” thing.  Thanks for all the insights SF shippers!!

I never cared for Jack Sparrow either.  I never could get into all those Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  But my son also says that Hook reminds him of Jack Sparrow.  Everyone sees something different, I’m sure that’s why the show is so popular with such a wide variety of people.  My 70 year old mother loves it too (although she thinks the shipping thing is bizarre!).

I understand where you are coming from rumplegoldfan. When I first watched Tallahassee with the speculation that Neal was Bae, I found it hard to imagine it due to his appearance and voice. Bailee could easily be a young Ginny but I don’t think Dylan looks like a young MRJ. However as time went on I see that he is the same self-sacrificing person with the good heart. I do think part of the disconnect is that we haven’t had his back story yet. I really hope it comes soon.

To be fair that has a lot to do with the way season 2 was written. He was build first and foremost as the mystery man and then Henry’s father and THEN it was shown that he was Baelfire. But then instead of showing up how Bae became Neal the entire story became focused on Tamara and her agenda. When we finally get some more information, it wasn’t about Bae into Neal but again about Bae and reinforced the idea of Bae as a hero who makes great sacrifices.

The problem with some people is that they expected sweet teenage Bae to grow up into sweet adult Bae. Just think all of your own life experiences. Are you the same type of person? I know I’m not. I’m not completely different, but my 14 year old self was quite different in wants and desires, and even personality, from my thirty-something self. And that was just the result of normal life experiences.

Transfer that to the fictional world and Bae being bombarded with otherworldly experiences on top of being the very human situation of being abandoned by his parents. I’m shocked he’s as well adjusted as he is. He’s lost, at a young age, literally everyone he’s ever cared about and who has cared about him. By the time he gets out of Neverland, it’s no longer unthinkable that sweet little Bae has forever been changed and damaged. And we don’t even know what he’s gone through since leaving Neverland. I suspect my heart will break even more. Fast-forward to his time with Emma and it makes their situation even more heartbreaking for both parties. I see Neal as just as much a victim in all this as Emma is.

All excellent points. I think Neal is amazing simply to have retained his sweetness of spirit, with a bit of a snarky sense of humor, despite the crapy hand the fate has felt him. He’s had to roll with the punches simply to survive, let alone try to perfect his character. True, he may not be the same naive, trusting Baelfire who blindly trusted a sneaky Blue Fairy, but then again he still has the core elements that make Baelfire such a wonderful character: a good heart, a desire to put others first, a determination to try to do the right things, even when the “right” choice is less than clear, and to sacrifice himself. I certainly am not the same person I was even a decade ago, but the core parts of my personality haven’t drastically changed. While my taste in music, my thinking about the world, and my aspirations have changed, I still have a slightly off-beat sense of humor, I still value family, and I’m still a romantic at heart versus a cynic. There are just some foundational elements that make up a persons’s character, and if Bae has managed to hold onto hope of second chance despite all the horrible things life has dealt him (e.g. abandonment issues galore, spending 100 years with a deranged teenager, having to scrape by to survive, heartache, issues of self-worth etc..) then I’d say Neal has actually turned out alright despite everything.

If anyone ever had a good reason to lash out and seek revenge it’s Baelfire, but he didn’t. He may have had to lay low to keep his father and/or PP from finding him, he may have had to steal a car to live in, but he’s never been a villain or someone who only thinks of himself. He gave all the money he had ($20K) to Emma and his car (i.e. his home he was living in), to give her a fresh start whereas he had to begin again with nothing. He is not a man who ever wishes pain on others, but sadly, hasn’t always been able to prevent it from happening. I think Neal is the kind of guy who thinks of others first and wishes he could do more to make sure others didn’t have to suffer. The way he tried so hard to save the Darling children and then for Henry are great examples of that characteristic.

I would like to take this time to thank you all for nearly making me bawl at my work desk again today with all your fantastic posts in here. I wish I had the patience to wait until I got home to check this thread but I never do anymore, LOL 😉

I don’t have much to add to what you all have so eloquently said all ready but I agree that we need a Neal backstory very soon to fill in some of those missing pieces of his history. That’s something I’ve been wanting to see for a long time and hopefully that time is coming VERY soon. The title spoiler for episode 3×12 gives me hope that this could be our first solo Nealfire backstory episode. I hope I’m right! 🙂

I hope so, too. Yet, after seeing some spoiler images from 3×12 of Hook and Emma in NYC (really downtown Vancouver) without Neal, I’m worried. Adam tweeted “not what you think” as far as the episode title goes. What if Neal has gone missing and Emma and Hook team up to find him, along with Belle and Rumple? I suppose it could still be Neal-centiric in terms of flashbacks of Neal when he was living on his own in NYC, but I’m wondering why Hook and Emma look so close….I fear we may have to put up with CS a bit longer going into the second half of S3.

I’m not as worried about that scene yet mainly because it doesn’t look lovey dovey at all. Emma is frowning and looks irritated about something and Hook looks very pensive and annoyed too (maybe about the purple bottle?). I feel like they’re arguing about something in that scene and that doesn’t give me vibes like they’re any kind of couple or even in any type of relationship other than what we’ve all ready seen between them. We may not have much information to go on but pictures with the episodes schedule to air post the fall finale so I’m choosing to not panic or worry over anything that comes out about them because I think it will drive me nuts. This Triangle of Doom CANNOT last too long or the entire fanbase is going to revolt because I don’t know of anyone right now who isn’t at least slightly annoyed by something related to it.

    I need something pretty…or a cookie…or both. Help RG! 😉

Edit: Sorry that my spoiler tags in the quoted area aren’t working right. Help??! 🙁

    *COOKIES!*

I don’t think they’d loose Neal again. It would be redundant to the point of absurdity.

I hope you’re right…I hope MRJ is spotted on set today or soon!
