KeymasterCould someone list the parallels of Neal’s actions vs Hook’s actions and the differences between them please.
For example: Emma was locked up because of Neal so she could find her family Emma was locked up by Hook which would’ve kept her away from her family. and
Neal secured a way to save Charming’s life without expecting anything in return because it was the right thing to do Hook saved Charmin’s life and expected a kiss from Emma as gratitude.
*scratches head*
Maybe Slurpeez and Phee and KFC can do this better than I but….
–Neal sacrificed his life to let Emma stay in SB and raise Henry
–Hook helped GOAT almost destroy the town, leaving Henry family less
–Neal fought alongside Emma and Snowing to protect Rumple from Cora
–Hook worked alongside Cora to ensure that Rumple would die, leaving Henry with one less Grandfather
I don’t know. Others can help more, I’m sure. Parallels are great but I always think they need to be taken with a grain of salt. And of course, they are wholly subjective to the person writing. So the CSers would have a response for everything I just typed out.

ParticipantWelcome annwyn. At the moment I’m kind of shipping SwanFire. I tend to hover between SwanFire and CaptainSwan depending on what I see in an episode. Dark Hollow put me off of CaptainSwan and onto team Neal and I’ve yet to see anything from Hook since that makes me consider changing my mind. All the character growth Hook had built up between 301 and 306, he kind of ruined in 307. I do think CaptainSwan will happen, that it’ll run its course, then Emma and Neal can work on getting back together. Since we’re halfway through season 3, I doubt they’d introduce any more potential suitors for Emma so Hook and Neal are Emma’s two options.
Going to sleep, I’m so making a list later =)
and CS will probably happen. But it is biased because of my own experience but as I said, I can’t believe a show about true love will have Hook being a smarta… when Emma says “we need to talk”. Because that phrase… as old as the world. Such a stereotype but so true. Communication is a huge part in true love. But then experience, I may be wrong. It just felt… Wrong once again when Hook said that. I don’t know, it just really put me off.
PS : I’ll get more into this, I don’t think Hook is an aweful guy “he needs to die I cant stand him and bla”. I just really think he’s not the guy for Emma. More on this after a bit of sleep =)

I really resented Hook in that scene. He was still acting like a petulant child. His whole demeanor post 307 is “how could you not notice how brave and handsome I was!? Why aren’t you praising me?! Praise me!” and it’s really repugnant to me. To me it demonstrates that he isn’t there for Henry, he doesn’t want Emma to notice how much he cares about her son and saving Henry, but he wants Emma to notice how special he is, how handsome and brave and alluring.
I mean, how does he know what Emma wants to talk about? What if she was coming to him to say, “omg! I think I’ve figured out a way to save Henry” and then is put off by his response. Or what if she was coming to say, “I’m totally in love with you!”
It shows that Hook’s romantic attitude toward Emma is only there when she’s fawning over him. “I rather fancy you when you aren’t yelling at me.” The minute she becomes tough as nails Emma, or walls up Emma, or “my son is the most important thing in my life” Emma, Hook doesn’t respond well.

ParticipantWelcome Annwyn!!! It’s always great to see new folks post here in our little SwanFire haven! I love what all you’ve wrote so far and I hope you keep posting here! I’m another person who started off not minding Hook but is now annoyed with him. I’ve also had some issues with several upsetting CSers in my online life (threats and demeaning comments towards MRJ are NOT COOL) so I totally understand where you’re coming from right now. Hopefully you’ll enjoy posting here as much as you’ve enjoyed reading everything! 😀
We all need a hug…just because! 😉

I had a list several pages back (p. 155) comparing Hook and Neal’s actions, which I’ve added to some:
Emma is going to notice patterns of Neal’s behavior which demonstrate he’s actually a self-sacrificing, long-suffering man who puts others ahead of himself. She is going to realize her own views of him were really just misconceptions as she realizes Neal has a history of risking his own well-being and doing the brave thing:
Neal:
- Being willing to fight in the Ogre War
- Trying to save Rumple from himself by going to A Land Without Magic
- Sacrificing himself for the Darling family
- Fighting not to become acclimated as a Lost Boy in NL
- Making a personal sacrifice for Emma to get home to SB to save her family
- Returning to face his demons with his father to save Emma in Manhattan
- Risking his life against Cora/Regina to save his father’s life
- Sacrificing himself by falling through the portal so that Henry wouldn’t have to grow up without Emma
- Telling Emma that Henry is the best thing to come from their time together when she said Henry comes first
- Telling his Dad to give Charming an exilir without expecting anything in return because it’s the right thing to do
Hook, by contrast, has a history of doing the selfish thing:
- seducing another man’s wife and then challenging a cripple to a duel leaving a little boy without a mother,
- general pirating
- using Baelfire to learn how to kill his father,
- not fighting harder to keep Bae aboard his ship,
- being an employee of Peter Pan,
- trying to repeatedly kill/wound Belle to get revenge on Rumple
- working for Regina in an effort to get revenge on Rumple
- working for Cora in an effort to get revenge on Rumple
- leaving Emma, Snow, Mulan and Aurora for dead to get revenge on Rumple and preventing Emma from getting home to Henry
- erasing Belle’s memories to get revenge on Rumple
- nearly killing Neal’s dad to enact revenge on him for killing Milha
- nearly getting the town blown up, along with Emma and her family, which resulted in Henry getting kidnapped
- Helping to save Charming, Neal and Henry, but really just so that he can coerce kisses from Emma
- Making a play for the love of Neal’s life, despite Neal supposedly being a “good friend” and son-figure
- Moping and acting indignant about Emma choosing to put Henry first and refusing to tell Emma more about what happened to his brother when he left the island
While people can change their patterns, I’m hoping that Emma will figure out for herself which man has the better track record of putting others first and would lay down his life for Henry without question. Even if Hook is reforming from his swashbuckling ways, Neal is the true hero of our tale.

Yes! It makes me glad to know that despite being told “no one” like Neal and “no one ships SF” that we do exist. I think as the story plays on, more might see what we do, if the writers continue to develop it the way we think.

ParticipantLots people love Swanfire and even non shippers like the idea of Emma and Neal. Lots of fans enjoy Neal they are just scared to speak up or just tired from some of the hate.

My mom is a very casual viewer who just started watching right before S3 began. She doesn’t understand fandom or shipping (I had to explain what “to ship” actually meant). So when our rewatch of S2 ended and she was all caught up I asked her, “who would you prefer Emma with? Neal or Hook?” And her response was, “I don’t understand. Why would she ever be with Hook?”
The total sum of viewers greatly outweighs any one number of shippers or even internet culture in general. So while I agree that A and E are probably keeping their internet fandom in mind, I think the stick to their story and the story they’ve wanted to tell for years was how a girl who didn’t know she was magical and the savior of a curse fell in love with the boy the curse was intended to find.

ParticipantI never was CS shipper, but Hooks attitude just puts me off. I didn’t like his reaction to her choosing Henry despite using Henry as way to praise her earlier after his ‘romantic’ speech. I didn’t like that he wasn’t dismissing her when she was trying to talk to her either, with that whole when a woman wants to talk blah blah blah. It just seems, that he is playing nice to get the girl, but behind her back he is teasing her dorky little brother.
I think CS will happen but end up fizzling out, here’s a quote from X-men (of all movies):
“Girls flirt with the dangerous guy, they don’t bring him home; they marry the good guy”
Add that with the deep profound love Emma already has for Neal and I see her heart going with him. Although, I don’t think it ever left him.
