KeymasterSo, this is something I am going to share, even though only a few of you will appreciate it. But since you all love me….(and my freakouts)
I was reading a Shamy fic last night and this little line Sheldon says to Amy (while trying to decide on a pet name for her) popped out at me.
“As early as the 15th century, ‘turtle’ was used not only as a term of endearment but was also considered synonymous with calling someone ‘lover’. The term was not meant to reference the shelled reptile, but rather the turtledove, a bird with a reputation for conjugal affection and loyalty.”
*ahem* From the last new TBBT

Excuse me while I try NOT to read into this and fail utterly.

ParticipantRG and I are too much alike I think sometimes. In the wake of the sinking and destruction of our Rumbelle ship, she’s been indulging herself in Shamy and I’ve been going back to the source material and reading various versions of Beauty and the Beast. Being a teen when the Disney movie was release, it was not my first introduction to the tale. I’ve always loved the older versions where he asks her nightly, “Beauty, will you marry me” and is really more friendly than in the Disney version. But a part of me was always a tiny bit disappointed in the Beast’s transformation to human at the end, and evidently it’s not an uncommon feeling.
I came upon an interesting blog post about it, The Transformation of Beauty It focuses Beauty’s transformation in the story and how she goes from really a sweet-natured girl willing to take on the responsibilities of her family and full of humility to a powerful woman who can face a beast:
And this is where part of the appeal of beastliness lies–in the willing surrender of power from Beast to Beauty. Because if he holds power as a beast, then what does that mean for her, who holds power over the Beast? She doesn’t mind that he’s an animal, because he’s her animal, safely drinking from her hands, following her commands.
She goes on to talk about this power and why when we get to the transformation it’s a bit disappointing:
Which is why the endings of these stories tend to be disappointing. The primal, transcendent power of a Beast becomes the earthly, mundane power of a Prince, operating within (though at the top of) human laws rather than transgressing them entirely. The dynamic between them becomes something more familiar–a husband and wife, rather than a beauty and her beast.
So at the end she’s once again back in the subservient role, now as a wife. It’s an interesting take on the story and I don’t know I ever consciously thought about it in that frame and why I do get a bit disappointed when he transforms. I do think there’s more to it than power, such as will he still be the same being underneath his new façade or a different person. But the balance of power is an interesting take to think about.
And this has nothing to really do with SF, but when does anything in this thread. 😉 I’m just feeling contemplative today. And my other beast returns tonight. Maybe I should post this also in the Rumbelle thread, too.
I do tend to have a thing for beastly aloof men with problems (e.g. Darcy, Rumple, Renard, Lupin). Between this quirk and UberFacts I’m never getting married, but then I think do I really want to. 😉

KeymasterOk I am incredibly sick of the media hype for this episode because 90% of it HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH Ursula’s backstory!!!! It’s all CS and Hook. I am….pretty sick of it
