That moment when you realize how much “Price of Gold” was setting up Swanfire.

ParticipantThey’ll also have the joy of seeing their son, Henry, gets his happy ending when he sees his parents not only still love each other but chose to be together for their own sakes. That is a phrase that Snow White keeps repeating to her daughter, that Emma owed it to herself, not to Henry or to Neal, to see if Neal were still alive and then again if meeting Neal again for lunch could be the start of her own happy ending.
Yes, I like that they’re driving that point home by having Snow repeat it. Of course, some people are just seeing her as annoyingly pushing them together for motives other than that, but whatever, if people don’t wanna pay attention to the actual dialogue in the show, then whatever.
Snow recognizes in her daughter the same fear that she herself used to have, that all the bad things would forever get in the way of good things. Yet, just as Snow had to realize that it’s worth it to hold onto the good moments, so will Emma have to come to that realization on her own. And when she does, that is when Emma will be ready to have hope for her own happy ending.
This is why I ended up actually enjoying the Snowing flashbacks more than I was anticipating, because they really did show a parallel to what Emma was going through with Neal in present day, and how her parents’ past experience was informing how they reacted with her in present day. And in the end, Charming did get through to her, if only temporarily, before the crap hit the fan again and by the end of the ep, Emma was back to thinking, “My life isn’t meant to have the happy moments.” I guess she sorta ended that ep in a Hook-ish mindset in the sense that she wasn’t focused on looking at the bright side and the possibility. But given that the ep showed Snow overcoming her fears and deciding to have a family, that’s setup for what the correct mindset should (and will eventually) be for Emma as well.
The self destructive trajectory they took Hook on in this ep was the opposite of the flashback’s journey of eventual self realisation and resolution. The trajectory they took Emma on in this ep was to try and talk herself out of the self realisation and resolution, before having a moment where she was gonna go for it, then having her regress. But the seed was planted in her mind. She did make a baby step forward, before taking two massive steps back.
And that’s how you write it if you’re drawing out the reunion of a destined couple and trying to keep them apart for as long as possible to cause maximum angst for them (and the audience) to overcome. Because now the audience knows that Emma did actually decide to go meet Neal, but Neal thinks she stood him up, and so he’s gonna have to try and accept that decision that he thinks she made, and Emma’s running scared again, so they won’t have a conversation about what actually happened, and we’ll be there screaming, “OMG JUST TELL HIM YOU WERE GONNA MEET HIM, THAT YOU WERE RIGHT OUTSIDE!” The way they’re building this storyline right now, it seems to me that they’re still heading in the direction of (eventual) SF.
Now I really want to see Disney’s “Frozen”!

BOOM! WOW, that’s sorta blatant, isn’t it? 😆 PS. the pair of gifs with both Henry and Neal popping up in the back of the Bug is the most adorable thing ever.

ParticipantI love that one! Neal does have a lot of great qualities. I’d add to it–can rock a cross bow, a staff or a sea-shell to summon a giant squid.
