Here’s an interesting video on unconscious bias:

    https://icelebratediversityblog.com/2015/03/05/watch-this-great-ted-talk-on-unconscious-bias-brief-but-impactful/

This applies to all walks of life, but explains neatly why OUAT and media more generally, continue to have such problems with representing diversity, despite claiming to have good intentions. The research has been around for a while now, and some companies are taking specific steps to counter hidden bias in areas like recruitment. It’s helping more women reach senior executive positions. I would really like to see the media industry do something similar. Biases are shaped by our environment, and the media is a huge part of our “cultural marinade”. If they’re not actively countering biases, they’re contributing to them.

I think equality is such a tight rope to walk to be truly equal. Whilst there should definitely be more representation for non-white and non-heterosexual groups in the media to represent the real world, I do think the scale could eventually start to tip in the other direction years and possibly decades from now where being white and heterosexual becomes the minority.

It is so difficult to explain but basically the minorities now will become the majorities in the future whilst the majority now will become a future minority because everyone is so focussed on equality of the minorities now. For example, women are given more top tier jobs because of equality however eventually the scales will tip too far in that direction where it is harder to get a top tier job if you are a man instead of it being equal opportunity. Does that make sense?

One interview from MRJ, the lead female and director from the play, curious fact, MRJ says that he has been working a lot and feeling soul sick, and even tho I`m not saying is OUAT related is actually funny that Michael Socha said that working in OUAT was soul destroying, or something like that.

I don’t think being heterosexual will ever become the minority. 🙂 If you look at it in terms of world population, whites already are in the minority. So it all depends on which group holds the most power in the culture that the media represents.

It is a possibility for some groups in some situations. But generally speaking, I doubt that the balance of power will swing so far in the other direction. Or if it does, it’ll be many, many decades into the future. I’d say it’s more of a slippery slope argument than anything else. Feminism has been around for over a century now and women still get undervalued, under represented and have to deal with all kinds of harrassment. The same goes for the civil rights movement (5 decades ?) and gay rights movement (2 decades ?). So for now, I think we need to continue fighting for equality and better representation for minorities.

I think your right, but I do think it’s something to be aware of, as you say “a slippery slope”. Just to clarify I do support under-represented groups to be more represented, I’m not saying they shouldn’t be.

Yep, don’t worry, I gathered as much from other threads you’ve posted in! 🙂

Just noticed that there are little black bits floating around Hook’s heart. Why does the show not address this? Surely that would be more interesting to see Hook try and make up and redeem himself for his past mistakes instead of constantly seeing him fawn over Emma?

Eh. I think its pretty much accepted that Hook isn’t 100% pure goodness at this stage. Judging from what others have posted in the recent comments in the Hook thread, I think we all agree that he is better as a character who is in the grey area, like Regina, but that the writers just aren’t doing a good job by writing him as if those dark parts don’t exist at all and ignore them.

I don’t think they will address it. It’s not something we didn’t already know.

For comparison does anyone have a recent picture of Regina’s heart? Is she completely red with no dark spots?
