Oh, and belated HB @RG!
[adrotate group="5"]April 27, 2017 at 10:19 am #337344hjbauParticipantThere is just no way there is more to this show then what it is, in my opinion. I find all of you guys thoughts about the show to be really interesting. I just think there is no evidence that they are hinting that they mean for this to be a cautionary tale except for the fact that the way the relationship is being written is unhealthy.
I just think if it was meant to be thought of as a bad relationship they would have a friend that was the voice of reason, or her parents would be extremely vocally against it, or her son would be having screaming matches with the guy. Obviously, they have had those things happen in small ways. Snow, Charming, Henry, and Regina have all had issues with Hook. Snow doesn’t even seem to care who Emma is dating as long as she gets to see her dressed up for dates and plan a wedding. Henry said very recently that he doesn’t consider Hook family and is pretty much just tolerating him. Charming said he just wants Emma to be happy.
The thing is that this show is falling into all of the obvious bad tropes of a unhealthy relationship, but without the pointers to this is unhealthy that would have to be there if they were doing some sort of bait and switch at the last moment. I think they are just bad writers who are so out of touch with reality that they still think these obvious unhealthy tropes like lying and jealousy and codependency are normal parts of a relationship. They, also, think that the only way to cause drama is for those sort of things to be happening. Like how they treat Rumpel and Belle.
Also, we have seen Eddy in interviews. There is nothing there. There is no depth of thought going on inside of that man. Adam has it a little bit, but he is not the one in control here. He just gets upset and trolls because people don’t “get” what he is writing and that is because he knows in some small capacity that it isn’t right. There is just nothing he can do about it. I think the reason Adam is so hostile on twitter now is because of how upset he is about what is going on with the show.
At this point, it is about money and keeping their job, in my opinion.

Agree with you.

April 27, 2017 at 10:34 am #337346RumplesGirlKeymasterMany CS fans aren’t keen to dive into subtext, so favourable text is all they need to be happy. SF, SQ and anti-CS fans generally pay a lot more attention to subtext and meta, because the text isn’t kind to them. So they’re stringing them along with some ambiguous signals, hoping it’ll keep them interested and hopeful enough to continue watching. It’s an old trick that’s been used in queerbaiting since the dawn of time.
That makes a lot of sense, actually.
And thanks for the Bday wishes!
On a slightly different note–though perhaps not a wildly different one given how much we discuss feminist critique in here–anyone else watching the Handmaid’s Tale? I read the book eons ago and it’s one of those books that probably shaped me more than I realize. I just finished the first three episodes and wow.

I literally decided signed up for Hulu to watch it (well, ok, and because Lucifer). I have the same relationship to the book as your describe. Won’t get to it until the week-end, but if you decide to create a thread for discussion, I’ll jump on board.

Done!
(did I know you were a Lucifer fan?) (ps: American Gods this weekend. You’re watching, right?!)
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 27, 2017 at 1:18 pm #337355PriceofMagicParticipantHappy belated birthday RG!
One thing I noticed about this episode this week is that, despite Emma’s still dubious costume choices, Emma actually seemed more like Emma than she has in a long time. Whether that’s just because JMo’s make up has been done differently or Emma just had a bit of spark about her personality this episode, Emma just seemed to have a bit of colour in her cheeks and looked healthier than she has in previous episode. Her hair styles were normal Emma.
Her choice of clothing is still not Emma. Emma has never been a button-up girl, I think if they just gave her some more open neck tops then that would help her not look like she’s had a complete personality transplant.
All magic comes with a price!

Her hair style was more normal Emma but I don’t know if I agree about her makeup choices. She has a continuously tired look about her, like Emma needs three nights of sleep. Her eyes are heavy and her makeup, instead of being nonexistent, came across to me as soft to the point of worn out and lifeless. Like she’s trying to cover something up and failing–much like what her clothing would signal to the audience if this were a domestic abuse story.
And thanks for the birthday wishes!

April 27, 2017 at 2:39 pm #337359TheWatcherParticipantthere are ways to dress someone excited to get married to her supposed true love and total black, long sleeved, buttoned up is not the way to do that.
Shes dressed for the funeral of the old Emma.
