#MoreBOOMLessGloomI think if I were watching this, without fan reactions, I’m not sure how I would feel.Ā There were lots of subtle moments that I didn’t think about so sure those things flew over the general audience more.Ā Ā Ā It goes back to–they’re keeping the triangle of doom alive, not that they wrapped it up.
What they have done really is establish for the casual viewer that Hook thinks he’s in love with Emma, and that whatever drove him to hit on Tink last episode, he’s still very much set on her.Ā They didn’t really go into Neal’s mindset as much but it was clear Neal had hope they would see each other again, and that Emma has love for him as she felt compassion at his father’s…whatever…and hugged him as people pointed out.
About theĀ notion that the song playing when Neal decided to stay away versus Hook coming to find Emma, I saw it as in both cases the song shuts off before the messenger about the status of the curse arrives.Ā Emma chooses to turn it off, but for Neal it is an accident as his Ipod falls away.Ā We don’t really know WHEN Neal decided to stay away, because it could have been the moment he met Tamara or sometimes after when their relationship turned romantic versus Neal just being a good guy making up for ruining someone’s day (he thought).Ā Ā Ā Ā SoĀ the more symbolically important thing to me is that Neal and Emma both like that song. This is not background music that the characters don’t hear–it is something they are playing themselves indicating something about their taste in music.
Also factoring in the setting, that she chose to go to NY rather than to Boston, seems to me a tie to current Neal, not the Neal she knew in Portland or waited to see in Tallahassee.Ā This fogged memory version of Emma should have no idea about any of that, yet it would have made sense for Regina to implant Boston.Ā So the writers suggest some kind of connection that led Emma from Boston to NY.
Bailsbonds people are not nationally licensed.Ā So NY and Boston are different states, so why move herself? Magic maybe could create the false paper trail needed to show that Emma had always had Henry, but to avoid seeing people she knew to avoid the contradiction it had to be a new place.Ā So who knows, within the logic of the show why NYC, but it was a choice of the writers.Ā They could have put her down in Pittsburgh–baseball fans like Adam know they’re the Pittsburg Pirates right? New Haven, Connecticut –just like the safe Haven was the curse survivor bubble.Ā They picked something that ties to Neal.

Exactly. Home is where the heart is. Emma’s heart led her to NYC where Neal’s home was prior to returning to EF. (NYC is also the home of the Yankees, which is Adam’s favorite baseball team if I’m not mistaken).

The same city location. The same song. Emma and Neal are two halves of the same whole. Their story is not finished.

Is it our version I will find you.He still has hope in them. All happy endings begin with hope. Neal has hope in both Emma and Henry, because he believes in them.

Yet, if it’s as if the curse didn’t happen, how is Emma in our world still and how did she meet Neal to then conceive Henry? Or is it just the case that Emma thinks the curse didn’t happen (though it did), and that SB itself will actually reappear again when Emma believes? Confusing!

The hug between Neal and Emma when they are saying goodbye wasn’t romantic. Ā At least not in the “I’m so hot for you right now” way. Ā But it was not just friendly either. Ā There was depth and sadness and emotion, it was just everything. Ā You could see on Emma’s face how sad and difficult it was to say goodbye and you could also see how much Neal leaned into it and relished every second he could. Ā Who knows how long before he could hold her in his arms again. Ā But he knows he will one day. Ā This wasn’t a good-bye to him, it was a see you later.

I think it was all about wording. Ā Regina didn’t say that history would rewrite itself or anything like that but that it would be AS IF the dark curse never happened, in that SB will NOW cease to exist. Ā So Emma’s and Henry’s memories will change but no one else’s. Ā All the people that were born in FTL (and apparently conceived) were going to return with their memories intact but Emma and Henry are now “cursed” in a way with new implanted memories since all the FTL characters will just seem like stories again. Ā The only reason why Emma can stay is because she is the savior and only the savior (or anyone conceived and born in our land) can avoid the curse. Ā All the people that died during the time SB existed are still dead and any births (Alexandra) will still have happened. Ā The question I have is what happens to the Darlings and the lost boys? Ā I would assume that since the Darlings are from our world (I think, still a little confused about that one) they would continue to stay in our world and the lost boys would return to FTL if that is where they were from.
Now, of course, this is just my interpretation on this. Ā The only ones that know for sure are the writers (Adam and Eddy in particular in this case since they are the ones that wrote this episode).
