Agreed. I’m actually starting to get a little offended with people over this. I don’t do the crying jag thing over a lot. When I’m truly devastated, something bad has really happened…I shut down utterly and completely. It doesn’t mean I don’t feel anything…it means I feel too much.
Yeah, people do NOT react the same way over traumatizing events and for people to be vilifying Neal for how he reacted is ridiculous. He’s been on the show for a year and a half now and while he’s had his emo moments, he’s never actually all out cried (unlike Belle and I agree that the contrast was striking on purpose) so it would have been way out of character for him to do so now. I have relatives who are the same as you RG, they don’t show outward emotions much at all, but you know they’re upset and that’s totally Neal. People are just annoying me in general over OUAT lately but this is one that needs to stop because it’s really becoming over the top and annoying.

I just can’t take this stuff anymore and I wish the media would stop feeding the CS trolls (who are thankfully not anyone on this site…I hope!). Here’s what I wrote…
I usually like reading these round table discussions but after this one, I’m just tired of the media types putting their own agendas into their articles. If you were truly on the SwanFire train, you wouldn’t have jumped off after one episode. Passion, chemistry, electricity…those things ALL fade over time and cannot be the basis for any real relationship. Emma has a bigger connection to Neal that goes much deeper than that stuff and good gracious, Neal has had more crap happen to him than any other character on the show and he has NOT cried because he’s not a crier. He’s always kept it all inside and you can easily tell on his face how broken up he is over losing his family. The theme of the whole episode was hope and he was the only one to not say goodbye to Henry & Emma because he has hope that their story isn’t over yet. There may be some CS stuff coming up but I still believe that she and Neal will end up together in the end. Sorry if I offend anyone w/this but I feel like Neal and SF shippers get crapped on all the time and I just had to say something today. #HopeforSwanFire

Slurp – Wow, that essay is amazing and also a great explanation of why I don’t care for Hook right now. It’s a sad state for this world IMO that so many people think he’s romantic, sexy, honorable, and charming right now when really he isn’t any of those things if you look at his own history on the show. The saddest part of it is they could have done SO much more with him and left the whole Triangle of Doom out of it. Massive missed opportunity for E&A here and no one will ever convince me otherwise that in some ways, maybe not in their overall arc but in some ways, they are totally pandering to the fans with his story right now and you should NEVER do that with any television show because you will never make everyone happy. Hopefully I’m proven wrong and things will improve on this front in the back half of S3 but it may be a long journey for us to get to that point if they keep this up.

Heather–cheers to that. Yes, there are reasons that people like and root for CS–this season more than last but it doesn’t just wipe away earlier moments that set-up SF.
Anyway, this is how I feel about coming into this thread, knowing I won’t see anyone who wants to air-brush Neal out of the story:

You know I was thinking that Hook might be an like Eowyn (LOTR), who was in love with the romanticized idea of Aragon and not Aragon the person. Arwen was kind to Eowyn, enjoyed her company, and there were moments where you can see her entertain the idea of Eowyn. But his heart truly loved with an idea. It broke her heart at the time, but in the end she belong to Arwen. In the end Aragon finally told Eowyn that you are in realized that he was right. And she moved on and eventually found her true love. This might be the direction Hook is going.
