KeymasterI’m so glad we have our haven. No matter what happens, we got each other.
EDIT
I was only half awake when I wrote the above but there were more things I wanted to add
1) Slurpeez I like that essay and I agree with it for the most part. I wish that they hadn’t made him HOOK. Because he’s not. He’s the modern romanticized version of Hollywood’s portrayal of a pirate, the romantic anithero. ONCE may turn stories on their head but they remain true–to some extent–to the originals. The essay made a great point about how we were in NL and only got 2 PP/Hook interactions, in the same episode no less. One of the classic rivalries in literature and Disney and it was reduced to a few scenes? And two of them were incredibly vague scenes–both of which dealt with Emma. He still has his obsession with good form like in the book except that he doesn’t really know what that entails.
2) Ranisha: I like the analogy!

ParticipantRepost for grammar Mistakes and some reason my sentences got mixed up.
You know I was thinking that Hook might be an like Eowyn (LOTR), she was in love with the romanticized idea of Aragon and not Aragon the person. Argon was kind to Eowyn, enjoyed her company, and there were moments where you can see he entertain the idea of Eowyn. In the end Aragon finally told his heart truly loved another (Arwen). It broke her heart at the time, but Eowyn realized that he was right. And she moved on and eventually found her true love. This might be the direction Hook is going.
"I will be kind but I will speak my mind."

KeymasterAgain with the hugging.
We’re not even a week after the winter finale and I feel like the fandom is going to tear itself into two.
(maybe it has?)
I’m going to be honest, there are times when I just want to up and leave the fandom and never look back cause AHHHHHHH. Crazy.

ParticipantRG-I don’t know how you still have your sanity as a mod here because you have to go read through all the other threads no matter what but we get to hide out in here when we feel like we need to huddle up with cocoa and cookies. Have things been really bad since Sunday? This board is actually one of the saner ones that I’ve seen and it’s why I come here so much. I haven’t gotten to read much else here today though and after the TV Fanatic thing I’ve avoided all the other boards. BIG MRJ HUGS TO YOU!!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

ParticipantI just read that article as well Slurpeez, and it perfectly captured my dislike for Hook’s characterization and the way they handled it
Even the connection to Neverland aside, Hook is still poor villain and an even poorer love interest to boot. Fact is if you stick another character that’s charming and sexy next to Emma it’ll be the same and Hook would be irrelevant. Harsh to say but that’s how I see him as. He has no other reason to be there other then pining for Emma, which is a lame character arc. At least his revenge arc was a tad more interesting even if it wasn’t executed that well.
(I’ll post here what I’ve posted in another thread about why Hook just falls flat)
Hook had so much potential during the Crocodile episode but as season 2 went by I felt Hook wasn’t executed very well. He’s an anti-hero villain, but his actions seem so lame compared to the other villains we got. He was pretty much a vengeful lackey for Cora, Regina, and even Greg and Tamara. All of his plans have failed except getting Belle’s memories erased, but then proceeded to get run over by a car. He became a pirate to avenge the death of his brother but proceeded to burn an important asset that could help him (the Pegasus sail) and went to Neverland (with no purpose other then it connects with his character) and didn’t know a way off the island and sat around for 200 years. Then he grabbed at Bae shawl to prevent Rumple from leaving town but got beat up by Belle. I just started cracking up at that point at his character. All of his reasoning doesn’t even make sense. He is neither cunning nor smart. His actions in Neverland were underwhelming as well. The group wandered around for days with no progress into getting Henry. Neal formulated a plan in mere minutes the moment he got there. Mind you, Hook and Bae spent around the same amount of time in Neverland. No wonder Regina wanted to leave the group.
He should get more of his own arc then just with Emma. I thought his relationship with Bae was so compelling, I was hoping for more of that since it turn my opinion back around about him during the last 2 episodes of Season 2 with Bae and Neverland. Now it feels like they swept that all away as if it didn’t exist. They might have touch upon it in the first episode of season 3 as if he mourned him like his was his best friend, but then once Neal was back proceeded to compete with him for Emma’s affection DURING a dangerous mission to save henry, I just wanted to smack Hook across the face.
If it wasn’t for Colin’s charisma and acting, he would’ve been long gone and I wouldn’t even bat an eye. I’m sad that he’s reduce to being a love-sick puppy dog for Emma. I feel like for the most part Hook’s character is made for the sole purpose to satisfy fan’s sexual fantasies. Emma is their representative of that fantasy to have a hot sexy charismatic pirate who is a bad boy but will fawn all over you in their place. It’s just that type of thing the media harps on and idealize. But that is not love, that is the definition of lust.

It hasn’t been horrible; just a lot of differing opinions. Sometimes I wonder if A and E realize the inter-fandom drama they’ve created.
I…kinda love you, Luna.

Participant*sigh* Some CS fans are declaring the triangle is “dead.” I posted my reply in the CSF thread. As much as I dislike the idea of Hook as a match for Emma, if they are meant to be together (which I highly doubt), then I’d rather it’d have just been conclusively shown in 3×11! Instead, we were pretty much left with a are-they-or-aren’t-they-true-love kiss where Emma, cursed not to remember her old life, kneed Hook in the nuts. We also got a clip of the dreamcatcher in the 3×12 promo, which is a huge SwanFire symbol, which could be her talisman and actually how Emma will remember who she really is. Neal pledged “this isn’t over. I’ll see both of you again.” If the writers really wanted to show with absolute clarity which suitor Emma would pick, if either, then I think they would have made it painstakingly obvious using some plot device rather than just drag it out needlessly.

KeymasterSome CS fans are declaring the triangle is “dead.”
It can’t be dead, and not from a “I ship SF” perspective, but from a TV one. Right now she’s not Emma Swan. She’s Emma Swan-lite. For a TV triangle to be truly over, the writers and shows runners would make it unambiogously clear that it was over. As it, Emma Swan..THE EMMA SWAN, not this current version of her, would have pointed to a guy and gone “you!” When it comes to triangles like this, the writers have to be absolutely clear or they risk fans constantly questioning if the two are really meant for each other.
I have read that Hook was supposed to be utterly ruthless and way scary
He was. He was supposed to be absolutely obsessed with the idea of getting rid of PP because it galled at him that PP was so young and seemingly immortal. At least that’s my take. (this is also why I am rather sad over the NL arc…a total of what 4 interactions between PP and Hook.)
I do still like Colin’s Hook but I think you have a lot of good points on how OUAT has deviated quite a bit from the book. I’m just glad he didnt turn out with the huge mustache, perm, and feathered hat from Disney. he he
lol
Like you said, you’re not Anti-Neal. A lot of us here aren’t anti-Hook either (Phee for example LOVES Hook and I ask her all the time to help me better understand his character because he is the one I find it hardest to relate to, personally). I didn’t really ship anyone with Emma until Neal. I like certain aspects of Hook. I enjoy some of his humor, I do like that there is a sort of devilish charm to him, I like that he does seem to run headlong into danger. He is at his most complex when dealing with Bae so I want more of that, for me personally.
I want him in a feathered hat. Just once. 🙂
