Participant“Emma is quite the popular gal, and it seems that she has a wide range of handsome men coming into play in the second half of season two. But the one that will always be No. 1 is Henry. Kitsis once again tackles the subject of Emma’s suitors saying, “I think what’s interesting is the love of Emma’s life last year was Henry and this year we actually met the one person that she has fallen in love with [Neal]. Hook is obviously eye candy. I don’t know if she would stare at him and think he would be a great father to Henry but he might be fun in Vegas.”

I read that quote often.
I think NL was really Vegas-esque. Our characters did odd things that at times seemed OOC. But that’s what happens in Vegas. You get drunk, you dance on tables and you lose lots of money. (or so I’ve been told)

KeymasterI just have a lot of feelings about Neal Cassidy.
An essay full of reasons why I love him and find him a genuinely rootable and wonderful character under the cut.
his belief in the good in people
One thing I love so much about Neal is his constant belief that people are genuinely good. He has been used, lied to, abandoned and hurt more than any person ever should and yet he still approaches every new situation with this belief and trust in people. The eternal optimist, never believing something bad could happen to him again even though he’s always proved wrong.
his strength and resilience
From the time he was a child, Neal has faced constant tragedy and hurt. His mother appears to often leave him alone as a young child, he learns his mother is “dead”, there is a terrible war going on around him, his father becomes the dark one, his father chooses power over him and still a child he falls through a portal to an unfamiliar land alone, he finds a family with the Darlings but sacrifices himself so they can stay together, he finds a home with Hook until he finds out the truth about what happened with his mother, Hook gives him up to Pan – who Neal refers to as the nastiest person he has ever met- who takes him captive in Neverland, he spends hundreds of years living in a cave, he gets to our world and has to grow up alone and again in an unfamiliar land, he finds love and happiness with Emma but has to leave her, he tries to have a normal life with Tamara and she tries to kill him, he is back in Emma’s life and finds Henry but gives up his own life so they can be together, his makes amends with his father only to watch him die, he gets Henry back and has Emma in his life when he has to leave them again so they can stay together.
Hit after hit after hit, he suffers loss and betrayal and abandonment and hurt and is almost always left alone to fend for himself. Sometimes it gets to be so much that he almost gives up- he stops counting the days, he doesn’t believe he will ever be forgiven, he accepts his imminent death- but somehow he always bounces back. Somehow, he always takes what he is given and finds strength and continues on. Somehow, he learns from his mistakes and from his experiences and he pushes forward. Somehow, he finds the way out of the places he’s trapped in. Somehow, he makes it to the next day. Somehow, he can watch his father be ripped away right in front of him and minutes later learn that he is going to lose the other two people who mean the world from him and still put on a brave face and say that it’s okay and that he’ll see them again. Somehow, he knows it’s never over. Somehow, he never gives up hope.
how he puts the well being of others before his own
As a child, he is willing to go to war. Still a child, he sacrifices himself for the Darlings. As awful as it was for him to leave Emma, he gave up his happiness for what he thought was what was best for her and to get her home. He puts his life on the line in Storybrooke repeatedly for Emma and Henry and others. He is willing to die for Emma and Henry. His is willing to risk everything for Henry in Neverland. He would do anything for those he cares about, no matter what cost he has to pay himself.
he does things simply because they are the right thing
Whether it be willing to go to war as a kid, leaving the person he loves for the greater good, protecting others, fighting to save the people around him, making sure Charming is saved without owing any debts- he does what (he believes) is right and he never expects anything or asks for anything in return. He just helps people. And maybe he’s not always right, and maybe he’s made mistakes, and maybe some of his choices haven’t worked out in the ideal way, and maybe people have gotten hurt along the way- but his intentions always seem to come from a good place. He doesn’t make choices based on what would be better for him, he makes choices based on what he believes is truly the right thing to do.
he doesn’t seek revenge or harm to those who have hurt him
With everything Neal has faced and with so many people that have wronged him, it would be easy to slip in to that path of revenge or “evil” or to simply lash out in anger. We’ve seen it with so many other characters on the show, their loss and pain turns into a quest for vengeance or turns into them causing harm in retaliation for what was done to them.. Neal never seems to even consider revenge or violence or harm. Even if he doesn’t forgive someone right away, like his father, he doesn’t wish any harm on him either. In fact, he does everything he can to save his father even if he’s still angry. He’s definitely knows things about Hook he could be throwing in his face if he wanted to, but he doesn’t. The last few times he saw Hook he was giving him up to Pan where he would spend hundreds of years captive on the island, and then the next time he was trying to kill his father, and yet this season he immediately trusts Hook because the others are and genuinely thanks him every time he helps.
Even if he’s angry at someone, even if he hasn’t forgiven someone, even if he’s hurt – he doesn’t show it unless provoked. He doesn’t go looking for a fight, he doesn’t look to get back at people, he doesn’t lash out, he doesn’t get angry. He just continues to live his life the best he knows how and continues to believe in the good in people. I think that’s something we should all admire.
his bravery
Coward? What coward. I see a child willing to give up his life for his people, a child giving himself up for his family. I see a child who learns to fend for himself and survive on his own and adapt to new worlds and protect himself and find a way out of the literal hell he has been taken into. I see that child who has now grown into an adult, who faces the one man he never wants to see again just to make sure Emma is okay. I see a man who faces battle after battle, who goes up against evil queens and magic portals and shadows and peter pan to protect the people he loves. I see a man who with a bullet in his chest stands up to catch the woman he loves, and proceeds to give his life for her and their son. I see a man who will give up everything if it means the people he loves will be safe. I see a man who is braver than I could ever aspire to be.
he admits his mistakes and learns from them
We all know Neal has made mistakes, but what’s most important is that Neal knows he has made mistakes. He has made bad choices, he has done things that he deeply regrets, and he admits to that. He’s spent every day of his life thinking about those regrets. He’d shout what he did wrong from the rooftops if it could fix what he broke. He apologizes for his mistakes. He admits when he’s wrong. He says he is sorry. And he changes as he grows and learns from his past.
Neal has reflected back on and learned from the choices he has made, and he’s not going to make any of the same mistakes again. He is constantly growing, changing, and trying to be better as a person.
He has flaws, he has made his mistakes, he has things done things and said things are far from perfect, but he makes his choices from his heart. He is complicated and layered and filled with hundreds of years of heartbreak and fallout from choices made by him or made for him, and I love ever piece of it, the good and the bad, and I can’t wait to see how his character will continue to unfold as the series goes on.
I only wish I was as brave, strong, resilient, selfless, courageous, hopeful, and genuinely good as Neal Cassidy.

YES! Whoever wrote that essay hit the nail on the head about why so many of us root for Neal to get his second chance!

*giggling because “rootable” means something different here, and yes, yes I do find him genuinely rootable* 😉
*hauling mind out of the gutter to appreciate the essay*
I felt like cheering the whole way through reading it, because YES, ALL OF THAT!
Hit after hit after hit, he suffers loss and betrayal and abandonment and hurt and is almost always left alone to fend for himself. And that’s why I have absolute confidence that they WILL give him his happy ending. And there’s only one person who they’ve written with the potential to be that happy ending.

ParticipantI could use some help from you guys. I got a new phone over the weekend and while I have my old SwanFire pic as the background for now, it’s really not proportional to the actual phone so it looks kind of bizarre since you can’t see the entire picture.
What kinda phone? Trick is to get something with the right ratio of dimensions to fit your screen size.
My favorite 303 moment was a tie between Neal hitching a ride on the shadow to Neverland and also the moment when he ran into Felix there and after knocking him out, told him that he wasn’t a boy anymore and he sure has heck wasn’t lost. That showed me that this man is SO ready and willing to fight for his family no matter who he has to go through or what it’s going to take (within reason of course because he is still Neal!)…he was determined to find a way to save them. There was a purpose and a passion in his eyes that we hadn’t really seen much of up to that point and I loved seeing him be so determined and adamant about being there for his family. 😀
Loved that! He was a man on a mission, and he was gonna go find and save the people he loves.
Ranisha requested some family photos and so I have done some family manips myself I hope they are ok 🙂
Those are really cool! Great work. 🙂

Yes! They examine all types of relationships. But we haven’t seen a SwanFire type one yet: pain and loss driven apart by fate but also reunited because of fate.
Fate, destiny…
This isn’t over.
