ParticipantBut would they fake-out-death Neal again? They did it once….
NO! I don’t like the sounds of this idea at all. It’s far too dark and even though I don’t think Hook always acts honorably, I don’t think he’s going to murder Neal. Even though Hook sees Neal as a contender, Colin O’Donoghue has still said on the record that Hook loves Bae like a son, deep down. I will continue to hope that the completion of Hook’s redemption arc will be him eventually doing the unselfish thing of helping Neal and Emma reunite.

ParticipantIf they did do that, then it would almost certainly be the death knell for CS. Because no way would Emma want to be with, or want Henry anywhere near, the man that killed or nearly killed Neal. Loved the Princess Bride reference of Neal only being “mostly dead”.
What I think could happen and CSers probably won’t like this is Hook dies. The writers have suddenly introduced the concept of Hook thinking himself to be “a man of honour” when clearly a) He isn’t at the moment and b) He wasn’t spouting that during season 2, so why start now? What if Hook sacrifices himself in order to save Neal thus doing the honourable thing and in doing so truly becomes a man of honour? Also aside from the triangle, Hook hasn’t really got any other long-running storylines going on. His revenge against Rumple was doomed to failure and Neverland is now done.

Keymastermy biggest issue is that I think someone dying is a very lazy way (in terms of writing) to end a love triangle. If Hook hurt Neal then it means A and E really have taken 222 and tossed it out the window and hoped no one would notice. If Hook died for honor then it’s not really Emma’s choice and while Hook DOES die in the original PP books, I think A and E do have a sense of “what is best for ratings” and killing someone who is admittedly very popular isn’t going to help them. While I don’t appreciate the overall ABC marketing policy of “Hook all the time!!” it is slightly understandable when you have a handsome man like Colin in leather and eyeliner. I would much rather see Hook redeem himself without an Emma-aid (way too like S2 Regina and Henry) by actually being a good man to everyone without expecting anything in return

ParticipantHook has an obsessive nature though, and Emma is the prize he wants to win. I don’t think Hook would back down from the triangle even if Emma told him too. (His “backing off” in 310 doesn’t really count since he then deliberately tried to make Emma jealous by insinuating him and Tink had something going on so that Emma would feel the need to fight over him). Hook would only become more intense to prove himself to Emma. Hook sacrificing himself for Neal (Hook may not die but everyone would think him dead) would prove that he does have honour since he wouldn’t be expecting anything for his troubles other than death. Also, Hook, in what he thinks could be his last moments, may have an epiphany that Emma will never feel for him what she feels for Neal. I think Hook is subconsciously looking for another Milah.

ParticipantI know, its pretty dark, but it was a play on the idea that Hook does love Neal, just like Regina loved her father–but just not enough as there’s something they wanted more. Plus Hook has been written in this way that whenever he does something harmful, there’s this offsetting fate or circumstance to it. Rumple’s the Dark One and not innocent, same with trying to kill Cora, he shoots Belle but she gets her memories back anyway, locks Emma & CO–but they escape. It’s always the way with him that even if what it seems he’s doing is far from honorable (hitting charming from behind with a lead pipe?) the harm of it is offset–so if it were Hook to do it more likely it wouldn’t stick 🙂 I can’t think of any other main character that would have someone they love (but just not enough)to do Dark Curse part 2–but of course who knows where/when everyone is or if there’s a dark curse cast at all.

ParticipantYour right about how all of the terrible stuff Hook does against people doesn’t stick. Maybe that’s why he can be such a divisive character. Using the locking Emma and co in Rumple’s cell as an example:
One section of fandom sees it as: He locked up Emma and co to die BECAUSE SHE BETRAYED HIM FIRST AND THEY ESCAPED ANYWAY SO THEY DIDN’T DIE
whilst another section of fandom sees it as :HE LOCKED UP EMMA AND CO TO DIE because she betrayed him first and they escaped anyway so they didn’t die.
Another example is shooting Belle:
One section of fandom sees it as: He shot Belle and made her lose her memories BECAUSE IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO GET BACK AT RUMPLE AT THAT TIME
whilst another section of fandom sees it as: HE SHOT BELLE AND MADE HER LOSE HER MEMORIES because it was the only way to get back at Rumple at that time.
Hook fans (and I guess to some extent Rumple and Regina fans too)judge their favourite character’s actions differently to non-fans. Non-fans look at the action and consequence/possible consequence whilst fans tend to look at the reason why that character did what they did. Favourite characters in any given scenario can also affect the audience’s perception of any given situation.
Belle is one of my favourite characters so I will always dislike Hook more based on what he did to her rather than what he did to Archie. (Did Archie give up Belle and therefore throw her in front of the proverbial bus? Hook already knew about Belle in FTL but the way the scene transitioned made it seem like Archie gave up Belle as Rumple’s weakness)
Perhaps the whole crux of the CaptainSwanFire ship war isn’t who’s the better man for Emma but rather, of the three, who are your two favourite characters?

KeymasterI think Hook is subconsciously looking for another Milah.
This I agree with wholeheartedly. Every interaction he and Emma have is some sort of life or death adventure. They haven’t had tiny little moments, like having lunch or going to a movie. Hook wants someone with Milah’s sense of adventure. But that’s not what Emma wants. She’s the Savior but she’s EMMA first. I don’t think it’s coincidence that Hook often calls her “Savior” or “Swan.” That’s how he sees her, a fellow adventure loving pirate. But to Neal, she’s always been “Emma.”
One section of fandom sees it as: He locked up Emma and co to die BECAUSE SHE BETRAYED HIM FIRST AND THEY ESCAPED ANYWAY SO THEY DIDN’T DIE whilst another section of fandom sees it as :HE LOCKED UP EMMA AND CO TO DIE because she betrayed him first and they escaped anyway so they didn’t die. that was the most perfect way to put it ever. It’s the same scenario, but everyone is emphasizing different things. Really, well done with that.
Perhaps the whole crux of the CaptainSwanFire ship war isn’t who’s the better man for Emma but rather, of the three, who are your two favourite characters?
I would go even further and say that the whole crux of “how do you feel about ONCE” rests squarely on who is your favorite character. If you’re an ardent CS shipper then you probably thought S3A was outstanding, everything you could possibly want. If you’re a Rumbeller (hello) then you’re a bit “eh” right now, though as a Dearie you can’t stop singing the praises of your Imp. If you’re an UglyDuckling but not a CSer then you’re probably a bit confused on some things Emma has done but rationalized it with “they were in NL and NL is like Vegas/Holiday/ect” If you’re a “Belle” then you’ve probably got a lot to say about S3A that isn’t rainbows and unicorns.
Everything in this show boils down to your favorite character and least favorite character. If Rumple is actually dead and never seen/heard from again I would still watch but I wouldn’t find it as enjoyable.
With CSF, look at the Character sorting thing that we did yesterday. I don’t think I saw any “Hook” in known SFers and I didn’t see any “Neal’s” in known CSers. But yet both CSers and SFers all had Emma in their top 5.

Me, too. I really don’t want whatever KFC had to eat before she came up with that crack theory. You’ll traumatize the whole Once audience with that crack…but it’s fun to read. 😉

I looked at the results and noticed that too. And also SFers tended to have RumBelle in their top 5 as well whereas with the CSers they were either further down or at the bottom.
