Just did my rewatch:
1) I think it’s very clear that Hook likes Emma. He wants her walls to come down so he can get to know her. He even says, “And who are you, Swan?”
2)But her response is: “Wouldn’t you like to know” and then after he responds, she walks off. In other words (to me): “My walls aren’t coming down for you. I’ve got other things to deal with–like a possible rouge Regina and parents who are very different from me and my son.”
You made some astute observations, which unsurprisingly, I mostly agree with. While I think Emma is certainly rebuffing Hook’s advances so far, she did seem to note he was being sincere in that scene. While she sees Hook is expressing his interest, she is not going along with any of it. She was just having an emotional breakdown about being an orphan for Heaven’s sakes and she is all the more determined to find Henry now that Peter basically threatened that by the time she finds Henry, he won’t want to go home. Emma has no time for romance right now. She hasn’t had time to properly mourn Neal. Anyone who says she’s merely hiding her emotions for Hook doesn’t really get Emma, IMO. She’s too busy dealing with her parents, her abandoment issues, her guilt over giving up Henry and her grief over Neal to really heed Hook’s advances right now. While I think Emma clearly appreciates Hook’s help with regards to finding Henry, that is as far as it goes right now. Hook is stuck in the “friend zone” for now, whether he desires something more with Emma or not.
Jennifer Morrison also had some things to say about any would-be relationship with Hook. Since I’m taking a break from the CaptainSwanFire thread, I’ll share it here. From an interview with Jennifer that came out post “Lost Girl”:
Interview: Once Upon A Time’s Jennifer Morrison Talks About Resisting Hook’s Charms
Once Upon A Time provides audiences with adventure, but there are others who tune in for another purpose: romance. Specifically, the group of “Captain Swan” “shippers” who want to see Emma hooking up with Killian Jones, better known to the audience as Captain Hook. Hook is trying really hard to get Emma’s attention — will he soon have any success? We spoke with Jennifer Morrison at the Vancouver studio of Once Upon A Time to get answers.
“He is trying really hard,” she confirms. “It takes her a while, surprisingly, to notice that he is trying really hard. The audience is in on it more than Emma, because the audience gets those lovely close-ups with the little glints in his eye, and extra looks that she doesn’t know! Actually, when we were live tweeting during the premiere episode, I said something like ‘oh! Hook looks really relieved I didn’t die!’ I didn’t know that happened! I was busy not dying! So I had no idea that he had that moment! So, the audience is a little more in on that than Emma is, initially.”
“What I’ve always said about Hook and Emma is that they are kindred spirits,” she continues. “They’re survivors. Emma is a pirate in her own way. She’s had to sort of go from one family to the next, or one group of people to the next, and find her own way to survive, and her own way to not let life get the best of her. So they’re definitely kindred spirits, and I think what Emma finds surprising on the island is that he exceeds her expectations in terms of his kindness and his help. She is someone who makes very educated decisions on people’s previous behavior. For example, she has to team up with Regina because she knows that Regina wants to save Henry too. So, she has to sort of brush under the rug the fact that she tried to kill her whole family, and her, and has killed thousands of other people and all of those other things, and just deal with the fact that she really does want to save Henry, and start from that common ground, but still make educated decisions from that point forward. With Hook, she knows what he is capable of, but he continues to surprise her by doing something different from what she expects. That is an interesting dynamic, that does play out,” she reveals.
Ultimately, it is Henry that is Emma’s top priority in Neverland, and a love life is not on the list of Emma’s priorities at this time. “She’s in an interesting situation in Neverland, because really, all she cares about is getting her son back,” Morrison says. “Ultimately, that is the forethought in her mind, is ‘how do I save Henry’ and ‘how do I make sure that he’s okay?’ And then what’s coming around that is that she hasn’t had a time to deal with what she believes is Neal’s death. She’s not processing the idea of romance when her son’s life is in danger. There are a lot of different things coming at her while she’s trying to stay focused on getting to Henry. There will definitely be some interesting ups and downs,” she hints.
It sounds like Jennifer is basically saying what many of us have been saying for months. Emma’s focus is on getting Henry, not on romance, and she still needs to process Neal’s supposed death. Emma is not thinking about dating now.

October 7, 2013 at 12:07 pm #214537RumplesGirlKeymasterWhat’s hilarious is that both ships will read that interview totally differently.
I don’t even know what to think anymore, honestly. I see episodes like 301 which to me are total SwanFire episodes where I think TL is being set up. And then the spoiler writers are harping on CS to a huge extent and I can’t deny their chemistry on screen (though it still feels really one sided IMO) Kinda feels like we’re being pulled in a 1000 different directions.

Of course, everyone will read into what the actors and writers say. We all have our biases. And I agree that while the writers could be leading us to think they’re setting up a love triangle, I question if that is their real goal or not. Before 3×1 even aired, I was resigned that CS would dominate the screen-time and that CS buzz around the show would be pushed by the media. That is fully expected since Neal is stuck in EF and a potential Hook/Emma coupling excites many vocal fans on Twitter. While I think Hook clearly has feelings for Emma, I’m wondering how much of that will really be reciprocated. Based on J-Mo’s interview, she really didn’t give any indication that Emma was even considering romantic feelings for anyone now. She’s too preoccupied. While Emma sees Hook’s sincerity more clearly, she’s not thinking about him in that way now.
I have faith that Adam and Eddy have deliberately written the story such that Emma and Neal declared their love for each other before Neal went through that portal. They really are star-crossed lovers who were destined to find each other across time and space. I was thinking over the weekend how Swanfire are really a cross between Snowing and Rumbelle: they have experienced heartache over a hard decision that Neal made and yet they still have managed to find one another. Like every epic love story, theirs includes untold hurdles, twists and turns from forces outside their control. Yet, I have faith that these present difficulties aren’t enough to stop true love, which is what I think Emma has with Neal. I was also thinking that as True Love incarnate, when Emma loves someone, she really loves that person, whether it be Henry, her parents or Neal. Emma fought so valiantly to save Neal and her heart visibly unfurled before our very eyes when she so boldly declared her need and love for Neal. This is not something we’ve ever seen Emma do with anyone before, and it was after she found Neal the second time, after being separated for over a decade. Here Emma is struggling to be vulnerable with her parents in NL, yet she was willing to be that nakedly vulnerable with Neal! It’s not one-sided either since Neal desperately realized he still a chance with Emma, and he’s going to move heaven and earth to get back to her. Ok, now I’m making myself cry.

Ah Slurpeez. You have such a wonderful way of describing things that make me happy. Have a cookie.

BTW-I’ve decided that I really need to stop reading comments for all the OUAT reviews that certain websites do because all it does is annoy me with what seems like a bunch of teenybopper fangirls all preoccupied with the shipping (not what the show’s about IMO) and others declaring that they’re about done with the show because it’s so horrible (if you don’t care that much about it, why are you posting a comment under the show’s review?!?). BLAH! Can I get some cookies for my sanity?! LOL 😆
