ParticipantI love the HoodedThieves friendship going on! Now if only we could have that kind of respectful, mutually affirming kind of relationship between Hook and Neal. I wish I could believe that Hook is really trying to help out his pal, Neal, by helping Emma to remember, but I have my doubts. Hook first tried jogging Emma’s memories by kissing her, and when that didn’t work, he still seemed hopeful she’d reciprocate his feelings. Hook seemed jealous of Emma’s feelings for Walsh, and now he seems jealous of Emma’s concern for Neal. I just don’t have much hope on the Hook-Neal front right now. I also remain unconvinced that Neal is the one who sent the message to Hook. I have a feeling it may be a trick, and that Zelena forced Rumple to send it. I know that sounds confusing, given Walsh’s determination to try and stop Emma from returning to SB, but maybe that is part of the WW’s plan. I’m not sure exactly what that entails, but we’ll soon find out.

What true love looks like

If, as I suggested, Hook was knowingly working with Neal, who had sent him the message, he wouldn’t be doing it purely to reunite her with anyone in her family, (which includes Neal). Hook doesn’t do anything unless there’s something in it for himself, and if responding to Neal’s request for help would get him to see Emma again, to see her first, to get to kiss her first, to get some time with just the two of them together, of course he wouldn’t turn down that opportunity.
But the kiss didn’t work, and I know the fandom has argued the ins and outs of kisses working and not working, but Hook didn’t see the Snowing and Rumbelle failed kisses, as far as he’s aware, he tried the kiss, and he bombed out, end of discussion.
Then Emma said how she loved Walsh, and you could see it was like she twisted the knife in Hook’s chest. Yes he’s jealous, but I think that’s compounded by him now legit doubting that Emma feels the same way for him, because of the FAILkiss.
When she remembered, she didn’t gaze longingly at him, kiss him, and fall into his arms. They even had the footage of a hug they could have used, and did use in an earlier edit of the ep, but they took it out, which I think is very telling. With that hug in there, it could imply that Hook could still have hope of her feeling the same for him. Without the hug in there, that implication is removed, and instead it’s another instance where she doesn’t respond to him like he’d hope.
When they were alone in her apartment, she didn’t take the opportunity to be all over him, instead she just poured him a drink and wanted to chat.
She referred to her fake life as having been “a really good dream”, and Walsh was a part of that good dream.
And now in that Sneak Peek, she’s asking about Neal, which Hook no doubt accepted would happen at some point, and again, it’s like another little twist of the knife.
I can’t help but wonder if these things are being dropped like little anvils on Hook to get through to him that a romance with him is really not a priority for Emma, which will lead to him backing off, which will lead to a better relationship between him and Neal.
I can see him agreeing to work with Neal to get Emma back because he thought he was still in with a chance, but it won’t work out that way, and in the end, Hook will have gone to get her for the benefit of her family, which should have been his actual motivation in the first place, and he’ll learn a lesson from the whole experience.

I like this idea and it would show that Neal is more concerned about *anyone* getting to Emma than Neal’s own desire to be reunited with her. Hook kept saying that he didn’t do it for her family, but Neal *is* doing it for her family.

And have a super awkward conversation

One can hope that if Hook really loves Emma, that he would want to best for her, even if that meant her being with the man she loves, who is Neal. Just because a person’s love may be unrequited doesn’t mean it’s less real, and perhaps the test of Hook’s love will be him letting go of what he thinks he wants in order to honor what Emma wants, which may very well be a life with Neal and Henry. If so, then I’d hope Hook could wish her and Neal well.
I think you’re right, and Hook learning such an important lesson would almost make the whole thing worthwhile. I’d love to see Hook and Neal resolve their differences and for Hook to grow and develop as a result of seeing the way Neal and Emma love each other. Instead of Hook being jealous of his son figure, I wish Hook could be happy for him. And even if it’s painful, I’d hope Hook could do the honorable think like Mulan did when she honored Aurora’s love for Philip and helped them reunite. As Mulan has said, “Love is sacrifice,” and I think Hook might make a similar noble sacrifice for Emma and Neal. I’m not claiming Hook will sacrifice his life, just his idea of a future with Emma for himself. If Hook could step aside and let Emma and Neal be happy, and actually be happy for them, then that would show tremendous growth for him.
