It was unprofessional and in poor taste. To actually go to the lengths of putting that photo in the frame just so they could have a stab at him again in a scene where he was completely irrelevant, was ridiculous. Coleman was an idiot, Colegate blew up and was a thing, many fans still don’t like him but the fandom had moved on, so why was this necessary? Fine if they wanna slip in little Easter Egg like connections to real world stuff, that can be fun, but that one in particular was just petty and stupid.
It was clumsy, too. No finesse. They could have said “What does Emma have against happiness?”, and it would have applied to much of her behaviour in-show while at the same time being a still tacky but better-disguised nudge-nudge to those who know about the real-world stuff.

I immediately thought that it was a reference to the Twitter blowup last year. If that was the intention, it was in poor taste and uncalled for, especially since Coleman is still on the show.
I mean, who did they expect to understand that reference? The millions of GA that watches the show and pays no attention to its online media? Or do they want to pretend as if they’re in synch with their online fanbase, yet can choose to deny it when they wish?

I think a lot of fandom people’s minds immediately went to the twitter fiasco with the Anti-Happy comment. They might claim all they want on twitter and in interviews that it was just a joke, but people form opinions and it’s hard to change them.
Nevermind. A quick google cleared it all up for me. I’m glad she loves all of Emma’s “ships” and her fans and I respect her defending them, but her reaction read a little grandiose to me. Her whole day? I love JMo’s portrayal of Emma, but the response seemed like she wanted to fan the flames. I think Lana handled it best. Please don’t hate me! This was only the impression I got from what I read.
No need to apologize. You’re on the same page as many of us. Lana handled it, and then JMo just fanned the flames. I admit that I lost a bit of respect for JMo after that fiasco and how she handled it compared to Lana. I might not like what Michael Coleman said, but he owned up to it and didn’t need to be dragged on like it was.
