People see what they EXPECT (& WANT) to see, end of story- If you believe in something you WILL SEE WHAT YOU WANT TO, no matter the truth, same as if you dont believe.
My comment on “Would you believe in Aliens?” was dead serious!
Why is it that that question would not be serious considering Emma is just meant to go “oh ok, cool, Everyone is from FTL, so am I & I have to save EVERYONE….Awesome!!!!” 🙄 – flip, I think I’d probably believe in aliens (there’s way more evidence out there than what Emma’s got to work with for FTL after all lol) before I believed in everyone in town really being FTL characters that I had to save & myself being an refugee FTL character to boot 😉 😆
At the end of the day its easy to sit at home in a chair & say how you would believe in that situation, right up until asked to believe in something like Aliens that is (its really the only example I can come up with outside of religion- which is too easy to offend with- so I’ll stick with Aliens lol)…perfect example here – how many videos are there of UFO’s etc online, how many witnesses, how many people who believe they have experienced ‘contact’— well these vids & accounts/experiences, could be & are considered proof, if you want to believe because you will see what you are looking for, HOWEVER if you dont believe, you will simply see something ‘normal’, find a reason for it or be able to explain it away……So who is right? Those that believe or those that dont? …It doesnt really matter if buying into either side means nothing more than believing it- its a VERY different kettle of fish tho, if believing means excepting you are responsible for the lives of an ENTIRE township of people, taking them to war/leading them into battle which will probably mean people you know & love dying. So Emma didnt see his wooden leg, there’s 3 possibilities there..
1 August is the only one who can see it…no matter who see’s his leg.
2 Emma doesnt want to see it, so she doesnt (August’s theory).
3 Curse hides it from sight of those not directly effected (ie Graham knowing he didn’t have heart, yet having a heart beat for others to feel & probably himself too, but him knowing it was just the curse masking his lack of a heart), so she couldnt see nor feel it even if she wanted to.Not one thing aside from Jeff falling from a window & disappearing off (which did get her going hmmm), would give anyone, any real reason to go ‘OH well that EXPLAINS EVERYTHING!!! We are all from FTL, gosh why didnt I see that before!!!!’ 🙄 😉

It is a real hard sell to try to convince someone who has never been to SB and has read every FT story to believe they are true. Does anyone remember when they showed the led of August it flashed from wooden to real leg. Guess who saw what?????? It is not seeing what you want to it is seeing what was there. Emma saw real leg and August saw wooden. What was there to not believe?? She saw a leg. Emma felt a heart beat in Graham but Graham felt otherwise. Yes aliens falls into the same category as believing FT characters are real people.

Yeah- it’s one of a very few examples that I could come up with that clearly gets people going, ‘oh, hang on, if you put it like that’ lol.
I have a couple of friends who started getting really peeved about Emma not believing & I pulled out the Alien along with another example, cards & it was very funny to see the look of horror on their faces as they realized there is no way out unless they said they believed in Aliens 😉 Needless to say Emma has been cut some slack in my circle of Once friends lolWe dont really know exactly what Graham felt, as he never said he didnt have a heart before getting his story from Henry & it was then that he found out the queen had ripped out his heart, so he figured thats why he couldnt feel anything- he didnt have a heart.
I could be wrong in my following interpretation but I thought that meant he didnt know he literally didnt have a heart, just that he couldnt ‘connect’/have strong feelings/emotions for or with anyone (kind of like Regina desperately trying to full her ’empty ‘void’- which we know is a feeling not literal lol). I mean why else leave Regina in possession of your heart after standing up to her (if you Knew categorically that she possesses your heart & not you yourself, wouldnt you want to kind of tread lightly until you got it back, seeming how she could kill you at any moment you stepped out of line????) – I also got the feeling that Graham still didnt realize Regina did indeed have his actual heart as after Emma kissed him he said “thank you” not “Oh, Shivers me timbers! ….REGINA, Heart- gotta go!”
The second Emma rode into town he should have noticed his lack of heartbeat, which would indicate that he ‘felt’ a heartbeat the same as Emma did, he also said when Emma felt a heart beat “thats just the curse” ‘pretending’… I think thats the word he used, so he knew she’d feel a heart beating, just that it wasnt real- (otherwise he would have been at the doctors trying to figure out why he didnt have a heartbeat before wondering why he couldnt ‘feel’ lol)- remember it was only after reading Henry’s book that he knew the EQ had ripped it out & started saying he didnt have a heart & he wanted it back.May 4, 2012 at 12:34 pm #145439miaParticipantThe heartbeat thing really comes down to the question whether it’s the actual heart that’s ripped out or just a “magical”. I believe it’s the latter, thus he’d have a heartbeat no matter what. My explanation is a biological one and one that I think no magic can explain away. How would Graham have been alive otherwise? If he had no heart, his blood wouldn’t flow and he’d be dead, he’d be cold. The only way he’d be able not to have an actual heart is, if he were indeed cold with no blood and thus a zombie … The curse could make one feel as if he was warm and had a heartbeat then. Otherwise it makes absolutely no sense that he doesn’t have a real heart.
That’s why I think the ripped out hearts aren’t the actual hearts, but “magical” ones, hearts that also take away your feelings – we all know nowadays that the feelings lie in the brain, not the heart, but back then they believed so – and thus allowing the person to continue living even though he’d be ripped of everything else. This way the person would also have a heartbeat. Curse or no curse.I’m just pointing this out, because I was thinking about this just after watching that wooden leg scene and went on question whether the whole Graham&Emma scene was also because of her denial. I don’t think so. The logic of the hearts wouldn’t allow it for me. Then again, the creators can’t think of everything and maybe someone here will come up with a good explanation of how someone could still be alive without an actual heart (and without any machines).
Back to Emma:
I believe that what August said is right, her denial is clouding her vision. But, there’s the hope we’ll see some development and answers this next episode. 🙂May 4, 2012 at 12:40 pm #145442hjbauParticipantIt may not be a good explanation, but i think the explanation is just it is magic. People throw fireballs from their hands and turn people into roses and appear and disappear at will. If they can do those things then living without a heart works fine for me. I do think it is literally their heart.

So I always figured she would come to the conclusion there’s too much crazy folks around SB! 😀 But seriously, I agree with Surayya, charming, hjbau, etc… It’s not easy to turn your back on everything you’ve ever known and just start believing – in anything – without a big, real, irrefutable proof.

Exactly and well put. I agree with everything that was said. Emma is the most human of all the characters even though she was born in FTL she was raised in our world. She never had a chance to grow up and yes she runs away from responsiblity. Regina has said she had 7 addresses before coming here (SB). She had only three boxes of stuff and MM said, “that’s all…..well I guess it makes it easy when you have to move.” Her rooming with MM was probably the most stable home she has had in a very long time. Afterall Pinnochio was the onbe who dropped the ball. It was his responsibility to stay with her and make sure she arrives on her 28th b-day to save everyone. He did not. He was busy man-whoring in Phuket, Thailand.
You are reading a book and one day a person shows up at your door claiming he is your son and every character in your book is real. You have to save them. Then another person shows up and says he is a character in your book and come over with you from another world and you once again need to save us. Oh yeah by the way your Mom and Dad are here too, the ones you have never met and they are both the same age as you. Now how absurd is a story like that. There are photos of Bigfoot, the Yeti and UFO’s and people for years have been skeptical, believers and non believers alike. Those are easier pills to swallow than two people telling you to save us all.
May 25, 2012 at 3:22 am #147694sam993ParticipantWell, since Emma’s believe isn’t an issue anymore.
I really think that one big problem with Emma next season is her good and evil persona. Will she lean towards one or the other? We saw many characters succumb to their evil side (Rumpel, Regina, (I have a hunch she wasn’t always bad) Cora) and saw many refuse evil (Snow, Hensel and Gretal, Red…). I think Emma is next on the list. Especially when she’ll figure out that Regina crushed Graham’s heart.
May 25, 2012 at 3:48 am #147696icebladeParticipantLooks like Emma might need one of those counseling sessions with Jiminy. 😀
May 25, 2012 at 4:38 am #147699JosephineParticipantEspecially after saying to August “I just had a conversation with Rumplestiltskin and the Evil Queen.” Not a sentence you say everyday.
Just wait until she finds out her baby daddy’s father is Rumplestiltskin (yes, it’s my dream). I think they’ll all need family councilling.
Keeper of Rumplestiltskin's and Neal's spears and war paint and crystal ball.
