If most people think Neal is Baelfire, then he’s probably Baelfire. Most of the mysteries on this show have been pretty to easy solve. August being Pinocchio, Cora being the miller’s daughter, Cora being the Queen of Hearts (even though that hasn’t been confirmed, it’s pretty much implied). So, the mysteries on this show aren’t that hard to figure out. The only twist that took the fandom by surprise was Red being the Big Bad Wolf. But other than that, we’ve been able to correctly predict the identities of the charactersThey had to leave clues. This show is so layered that, if they didn’t people would think every little twist was just pulled out of the writers behinds. That’s what i like about the show so much.
The flip side to this is that, for those freaks like us who spend a lot of time talking about it, we can often figure it out before the big reveal. Even if it is the kind of thing the casual viewer would be blown away from.
For those of you whose main reason for not wanting Neal to be Bae (and you are perfectly entitled to your opinion) just because it would be “too predictable,” what would be worse; a show that is predictable or a show that isn’t as tied together?

After witnessing your father murder innocent people, having him abandon you for magic and power, and being thrown into a new and dangerous world, yes, Bae should be a broken and depressed man. Those are some seriously traumatic events for someone to suffer through. He had no one to take care of him, no skills to get a proper job in this world, and no knowledge of how to survive in this world.
A lot of people speculated that Baelfire would turn out to be a bit of a troublemaker or lost soul the next time we see him. So, Neal’s personality fits perfectly for how Bae would be NOW. Just because he had a few early years of happiness doesn’t mean that you should grow up normal and well-adjusted.
Yeah, I agree. Watching the only person in the world you ever truly loved essentially turn into a demon right before your very eyes, watching him murder and terrorize innocent people, and being thrown into an entirely different world from you’re used to. That is TERRIFYING. Just having one of these things happen to you would cause someone to become suicidal. And then add on top of that he grew up without a mother, he was almost sent to war, his father was constantly being terrorized by his fellow villagers because of his cowardice during the ogre wars, and knowing that your father, your idol, your hero, abandoned you for magic and power…Dude…you’re gonna have one messed up kid on your hands. Neal’s current personality makes total sense to me.

If Neal is Bea, i’m really glad with the way they went. I mean he’s damaged, but I don’t think i could have handled it if they turned him into an overgrown angsty teen. For all Neal’s broken places, he has TRIED to move on and not let all that fear, pain, anger and so on ruin his life.

I also agree that Neal’s currently mental and emotional state makes sense in the context that he is in fact Baelfire. I never expected Baelfire to be a happy, well adjusted adult. The’re no way that he would be able to maintain a happy, stable lifestyle after everything he’s suffered through.
I’m sad to hear that things have gotten hostile within the fandom. I thought everything was going just fine. It’s just a theory, it’s nothing to get riled up over. 🙁
November 7, 2012 at 6:31 pm #159931thetricksterParticipantI’ve never said Bae would be a normal balanced man, but neither the way Neal is.
Neal is broken, but he is also innocent, he doesn’t seem to be a person who has been in contact with such traumatic events, he is broken in the sense of being lost, with a huge lack of affection and looking for hope, while Bae would be darker, distrustful… a person who probably tries to forget about his pass without success, to become totally different of what his father wanted for him.
Give me a depressed soldier who always risks his life in battlefield, a wrestler, or something similar, and I would vote for him being Baelfire. (by the way, a 14-15 years old guy who can work with wool and wood is more skilled to get a proper job in this world than lots of my High School mates who left studies at that same age)
Magickingdom, have things gotten hostile within the fandom?? I didn’t notice, from my part, it was not my intention. 😥 Just sharing ideas, personally I don’t get angry because of different opinions… and hope no one does, it is just for fun!!!

But think about this for a moment.
I only have a couple semesters of Psychology under my belt so correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t it possible that Bae could have developed that as a way to feel closer to his dad? I mean the last night Rumple was really Rumple was the night he did the only non-cowardly thing in his life. He and Bae broke into the Duke’s castle. So maybe it’s like he’s trying (even if it’s just subconsciously) to remember the last moment he really had his papa.
What do you guys think?

That is an interesting point! But maybe the fire was more shocking to Bae than the stolen dagger, since he waited for his father in the forest?? I’m not a psychologist, but even knowing what was what his father was doing in the castle, he didn’t see the stolen item until his father was already the Dark One.
Any way, I like your approach ^^Ps: I’ve just remember it, but Baelfire told his father, after meet him in the forest, the he “had a bad feeling”. It is just a quick flash in my mind, but… is there other type of magic in FairytaleLand? Sort of, you know, farseers, or something similar? I’m not saying that Bae could have magic himself, just that the detail makes me think about how many forms of magic existed there.
