Hi, Oncers – Can anyone tell me where they think Emma’s last name came from? She wasn’t adopted, and since names mean much in OUAT, I think there has to be some significance to the last name of Swan or Swann? Has this been discussed anywhere?
Alos, has anyone noticed that no one in SB has a TV? They have cell phones, but not television – seems a big omission.
Hope to get some great answers, theories or speculations on these questions.

I never noticed the TV’s missing. Good eye Chrystal 🙂

She’s the Ugly Duckling (http://onceuponatime.wikia.com/wiki/Emma_Swan), never fitting in while growing up, and now admired as an adult.
I don’t know how the child protection authorities go about naming a baby Jane Doe, but either she didn’t have a last name or Pinocchio didn’t know what it was.

October 19, 2012 at 8:10 pm #157268schmackyParticipantShe was adopted as a baby. Then when she was three years old, her adoptive parents had a child of their own and returned her to child protection services (that’s so jacked up beyond words). I believe the family that adopted her was Swan (it’s not stated, that’s just my belief). And I agree with Gaultheria that she’s the ugly duckling and therefore her name has a meaning. I don’t think they’d have their main character (POV character)’s last name solely be a nod to a previous show they worked on.
October 20, 2012 at 9:55 am #157320SlurpeezParticipantLast Feb, Edward Kitsis said about Emma Swan’s name:
Is there something more to Emma’s last name? Is there an ugly duckling or swan princess connection for her?
We chose the name because it’s the metaphor for her journey, to become the swan. And right now I don’t think she is. The funny thing about Emma is theoretically, if she truly believed what’s going on, she’s a princess. But if you told Emma Swan she was a princess she’d … laugh at you.”
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/02/12/once-upon-a-time-team-we-show-women-who-arent-afraid-of-power/Now that Emma has believed and embraced her identity as Princess Emma, she has gone from an “ugly duckling” to the rightful heiress of the Enchanted Forest as the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. She is starting to realize that she is in fact a metaphorical “swan” as she realizes her parents always wanted and loved her.

I don’t think she has embraced her identity as Princess Emma yet. I think she’s embraced that she’s Snow White and Charming’s daughter but I don’t think it’s really hit her yet that she’s a princess.
