I know there’s a thread about Emma’s tattoo in the off-topic section, but I looked and surprisingly couldn’t find anything about it in the other on-topic sections.
People with much better eyes than I have caught it being featured in the preview for “Tallahassee”,
It’s a slightly better shot than this shot of it,
Any theories behind it? I think it’s connected to Henry’s father in someway, but other than that, I have no clue.
Also, I’m not sure if it will just be featured in this episode, or if it’s something that will come up again.
For those that have followed the episode 10 spoiler sections, you know my thoughts that the tattoo will come again to show that's not really Emma, but either Hook or Cora as Emma. Of course, I could be totally off-base with that theory, and they'll only focus on the tattoo for this episode.

He seems to have a thing for that time period and to be connected to the “Beat Generation” since Neal Cassady is a character from that novel On the Road. Maybe the tattoo is something Emma got out of love for “Neal” when they went on the road together in that yellow bug.

He was the inspiration for the Dean Moriarty character in “On The Road”…as well as the the character Mac (Jack Nicholson) in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, the subject in the Grateful Dead songs – “Cassidy” and “The Other One” and earned the nickname Cowboy in the documentary “Magic Trip” (with the Grateful Dead) where he drove the ‘Further’ Bus from San Fran to NY City.

It’s a novel/play that takes place during the French Revolution about the fictitious English Gentleman Sir Percy Blakeney and his French wife Marguerite. Percy lives as all these aliases – the Scarlet Pimpernel being a hero who saves French noble families that are sentenced to die in France. At home, under his legal name, he plays the part of an idiot to keep suspicion off him being the Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately, Marguerite ends up thinking he wasn’t as heroic and kind as she had thought when they met -causing a lot of friction in their relationship. It’s when they are finally honest about who they are, fighting side by side, that they realize their love for each other again.
There’s a lot more going on in the overall plot (Percy even has a sidekick that kind of reminds me of August) but just the story of Percy/Marguerite reminds me of a possible Emma/Neal(Bae) plot.
The tattoo looks like the Blakeney family crest, a Scarlet Pimpernel (type of flower) that the hero used to sign letter-taunts to his advisories.
If anyone’s interested, was obsessed with an adaption of the novel into a mini series starring Richard E. Grant and highly recommend it!

Her tattoo does sort of look like the Scarlet Pimpernel. Plus, I think that Bae’s and Emma’s love story would be like that because I don’t really think that Bae did whatever Emma thinks he did, and eventually she’ll see that he is heroic and kind.
I think it also works with him being a con man or with him actually being an undercover cop, who Emma thinks set her up. I really love that theory, by the way, and can’t stop thinking about it. I know the synopsis doesn’t make it seem like Neal is a cop and his alias would point towards him not being a cop too, but I agree what a twist that would be especially since Michael Raymond-James always plays some kind of criminal type of character.
Maybe he didn’t want to turn Emma in because he was falling for her/in love which is why he was trying to get her to go straight. Things went awry though like he interpreted some behavior of hers as not using him perhaps or perhaps he just got scared by his feelings for her and like his dad thought that no one could ever really love him because everyone he’s ever loved has abandoned him first, and he figured Emma would be no exception especially if he ever tried telling her the truth about his past life. Of course, unfortunately she sees that he was behind her going to jail because as she sees him being congratulated by his fellow officers, which could tie in with her saying his life got better her life got worse. (Although if he bailed on her or she thinks he did when they were both thieves that makes sense too.). Anyway, even though career wise and legally wise he might have made the right choice in deciding to turn her in, it’s a choice that keeps haunting him.
Yes, probably won’t happen but I sort of want it to now because being an undercover cop would fit Bae’s personality when he was younger. Plus, I just want him to be like that still all heroic and brave; although, I understand how he could have got sucked into a life of crime. I think that would also fit in with him being the Job of OUaT from what we’ve seen so far too in that so far from what we’ve seen of Bae, he’s a good character and when he has the chance to act does the right thing, but always gets punished in the end.
(His mother leaves him home alone when he’s a very young child while she’s out getting drunk with pirates. He has to hear her badmouth his father in front of said pirates. Then, she leaves him to live with those pirates. While his father loves him very much, he has to endure what his mother couldn’t with by having to hear everyone in his village call his dad a coward and hear talk that Rumplestiltskin isn’t even his father. He’s also dirt poor which means it seems like it’s impossible for him to avoid having to fight in the Ogre War. Of course, he doesn’t mind, but his father does, which of course leads to his father being the Dark One. He now has wealth in his life and doesn’t have to go fight in the Ogre War, but he’s afraid of what his father has become. So he tries to help his father, but instead of his father honoring their deal, his father is a coward again and chooses power over his own son. Then, we skip to how he is in NYC where he looks like he leads a lonely life.)
Also, we’ve also seen all these character make the wrong choice legally, as well as morally, so maybe it would be nice change of pace to have one character legally make the right choice but not actually be the right choice. He might have his own sort of ethics being a cop and perhaps adapting to our world differently than either Emma or August have in a way like he could be all about following the rules even when it might not always be the best choice because maybe he fears what happens when people don’t follow the rules like what happened to his father. Hopefully, I’m explaining it, but like his job and upholding the law could be one of the things that helps Bae cope and function in this world.
Maybe they could tie that in later with where I think they’re going to go later with science vs. magic with Bae being on the side of science, and his father being on the side of magic.

Every character in OUAT is layered so Neal had to have what he thought of as good reasons for what he did or maybe Emma just doesn’t know everything that was going on there.
For those that have followed the episode 10 spoiler sections, you know my thoughts that the tattoo will come again to show that's not really Emma, but either Hook or Cora as Emma. Of course, I could be totally off-base with that theory, and they'll only focus on the tattoo for this episode.
I think that would be a really interesting way to play it and, honestly, the tattoo has to be important. It’s just too random of a thing to include otherwise.
Also, along the lines of that theory (see spoiler) I think it would be really cool if Neal was the first to notice that Emma wasn't really Emma. He could have suspicions and then say something to make the imposter slip up–maybe start talking about something in his and Emma's past but have it not be how it really happened. When the imposter tries to go along with it to keep their cover, he confronts them. And then if the real Emma and MM haven't shown up yet, Charming, Henry and the others would look at Neal all funny and go “How would you know that?”
October 30, 2012 at 7:14 am #158620PheeParticipantThey’ve updated the tatt design since we first saw it. It’s lost a petal. 😉
I kinda hope they have matching tatts, though a dainty little flower would be an odd tatt for a guy to get, so probably not. If they are using the Scarlet Pimpernel as inspiration here, I’d like to see him with a tatt of the sword that goes through the flower.
October 30, 2012 at 11:30 am #158630SlurpeezParticipantDoes anyone know where this coat of arms comes from in FTL? Someone posted it on Tumblr in connection to the Emma tatoo theory, but didn’t bother sayings which family it belongs to. Is it King George’s family crest? That would kinda make sense, since King Geroge is her adopted grandfather.
I like the theory about the Scarlet Pimpernel. Now that we’ve seen the writers include a character from a Victorian novel (Dr. Frankenstein), I believe they could include other Victorian novel heroes. Adam and Eddy recently disclosed that they originally wanted Graham to be Sherlock Holmes, but when they couldn’t acquire the legal rights, they settled for the Huntsman.

Edited to add that I just found a screencap from the beginning of “Heart of Darkness” and George’s soldiers appear to be wearing that same crest.
