In this week’s episode, Tallahassee (I do know how to spell that now, DanielJLewis), Emma didn’t touch the giant’s bean. The giant said the bean was dead, but what if Emma’s touch can bring it back to life. This supports the idea that Cora needs Emma to open a gateway between worlds.
Emma’s touch gave Regina her powers back in Broken.
In season one, Emma’s touch (or possibly her presence at times) gave Mr. Gold his Rumple memories. Kissing Graham gave him back his Huntsmen memories. Some could say it was true loves kiss between Emma and Graham, but Emma’s reaction was anything but true love, so her touch probably gave him back his memories.

November 8, 2012 at 4:07 pm #160018PanTheManParticipantThat’s very true. Dead is dead. But I’m inclined to think that objects work differently than people. People have souls and magical objects do not.
Jefferson’s Hat didn’t work any more until Emma touched it. No one said the hat was Dead, but Jefferson seemed certain that its magic had been spent. But when Emma touched it, the magic returned and opened the portal.
A normal bean would have rotted away. This one is stiff around. Why show the bean if its no longer useful in someway. In writing this is called “Chekhov’s Gun”. If you show a gun early on in the story, it will more than likely be used later. Otherwise, why show it?
I can’t remember if Emma has had contact with other magical objects, but it is something to consider.
I totally acknowledge that the bean could be dead and useless and that Dead is dead. lol.
November 8, 2012 at 6:47 pm #160041schmackyParticipantWell just because they showed the bean doesn’t mean it’s going to have importance later.
It could just be the parallel with Emma. The Giant carries around a bean to remind himself of what had happened and to not trust humans.
Emma wears a keychain around her neck to remind her of the betrayal she suffered and to never allow herself to trust like that again.
That could be the only importance of the bean. But maybe you’re right, maybe it’s magical and we’ll see it again.

How many times have we heard that Emma herself is magic. We heard the mad hatter going on about it, August couldn’t let it go, and then we saw it happen a few times. I hope that this comes into play. Don’t forget that Emma still owes Rumple a favor…maybe the key to getting across the line is Emma herself…Maybe Rumple will send her over to look for Bae…

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if that bean comes back into play, and now you’ve got me wondering how that could happen. Hook didn’t seem to be interested in getting it, so I’m guessing it’s not part of Cora’s current portal plans. If so, and he leaves the Giant’s place without taking the bean, it’d have to be brought back into play in some other way.
Just had an idea that’s based on something that’s been discussed in the spoilers section, though it’s a theory that’s largely just speculation, so it’s not strictly a spoiler, but I’ll still put it in spoiler tags, just to be safe…
This idea ties in with the impostor theory, where Hook and Cora get back to SB first. I'm assuming that whatever Cora plans to use as a portal, she plans to use the sparkly dirt – which is sparkly because Emma touched the wardrobe – to activate the portal. What if there's some mad race to get to this portal, and Snow and Emma don't get there in time, but they see enough to figure out about the sparkly dirt. Then Emma could be all, “Well the hat wasn't working until I touched Regina, so, uh,” and then they may figure out that Emma has this ability. Maybe then they'll go back to the Beanstalk so Emma can grab hold of the bean and try to bring it back to life.
This next bit IS actually spoilery, so if you're a spoilerphobe who braved the first part, look away…
It's been said that Jorge's been notified that he'll be needed again, and this would be a way they could work him into another ep in the not too distant future.

November 24, 2012 at 1:30 pm #161983evilqueenParticipantWhy would Merlin trade his sons with Rumplestiltskin?
November 24, 2012 at 3:24 pm #161998gigiParticipantI still don’t get why Emma has magic!? Just because SW and Charming is true love so she has magic? If so Rumple+Belle, Aurora+Philip children will has magic as well too?
November 24, 2012 at 5:17 pm #162012schmackyParticipantMaybe it has something to do with the well. The love potion was dropped into it, Emma drank from it herself, her mother drank from it before she was even conceived, she is the personification of the true love potion.. I think it’s a mixture of things.
