Reading the recent interviews made me think of what the game changer could be for the end of Season 4 that changes the entire town. From the promo for the finale, we all know that Isaac is writing an AU where all the hero and villain roles are reversed. Of course this is going to be undone by the end of the finale, but my theory is that everyone will still retain their memories from the AU. Why would this be a big game changer? Because now all the heroes and villains will know what it’s like from both perspectives. It’ll be a new case of “we are both.” In particular, I think this could change Regina and Zelena’s relationship. If it turns out that Regina and Zelena grew up together as close siblings in the AU, then that would create a new bond between the two and perhaps cause Zelena to reform by the time this AU is over. It would be a very fast way of character development for a lot of characters, though at the same time it would be somewhat believable if they have several years of memories from when they were in the AU.

If the change is for Villains to have a happy ending, then that would mean the Mills Women as well.Cora would be a good mother who raised both of her daughters, meaning Regina and Zelena grew up together, perhaps even having a strong bond, and when everything returns to normal…yes they will have two sets of memories from two lives, but I think the bond that Regina and Zelena will form in the AU will be enough to undo all the bitterness and resentment they have for one another in the present.
This entire episode is about seeing things from your enemies point of view, if that happens, then this will be a big “Ah Ha” moment for both villains and heroes where it allows understanding for how the other felt.

That sounds about right. A&E have hinted that the finale would result in changing circumstances (a la “magic is coming” end of S1) rather than totally changing the characters themselves. Though the characters keeping their AU memories would change their perspective, and arguably, their characterization.

I think that’s plausible, and would tie in nicely with previously developed themes. What I’m curious about is whether the circumstances of the AU alter the physical circumstances of present-day SB? We have no reason to think that AU is any less real than the “real” story, since both are stories, right? So, once the AU is unmade, but the memories remain, what happens to Zelena’s pregnancy, Rumple’s heart condition, Hook’s hook, Regina’s infertility and so forth, if some of these just didn’t take place in one version, but did in the other?

It would be super fast character development but I think I’d prefer that to everyone going back to the status quo which was my fear about an AU in the first place: no lessons are learned because the board is reset at the end. But if they retain their memories and their experiences of being on both sides of that very shaky hero/villain line, then that’s good moving forward.

That’s why I hope that we’ve been watching the AU all along, and that we and the characters are going to get a glimpse of how they would have been in the prime universe. I think their lessons would have more of a lasting impact that way.

Storybrooke will be receiving visitors from the outside world, which will eventually end with everyone in storybrooke realizing that they don’t belong in A Land Without Magic, prompting them to return to the Enchanted Forest.
We know there are rare sources of magic outside storybrooke, like the Dragon.
We know greg and Tamara worked with others who believed in magic.
We know most people don’t believe in magic, and seeing people become believers, witnessing magic for themselves, could really play on the show’s theme of hope.
