Oh gosh. Well. I guess it is possible he was trying to be clever instead of just a bit crude. I don’t know. I do like the idea of him being connected to someone else. I think that we know he will have some connection to Regina, but there is still the possibility that she could take the place of other witches like Ursala or the Wicked Witch from Wizard of Oz. So her point of connection could be vast. I do like the Cheshire cat theory because they could do a lot with that. Who knows though. We just don’t know enough about his character at the moment. We are all just guessing in the dark.

Perhaps Once Upon a Tail fits the Cheshire Cat theory. At first, I thought no way, but now I’m starting to wonder. The Cheshire Cat could disappear, which might explain his missing limb. We’re supposed to find out his connection to Regina in episode 5. Could Dr. Whale have been her cat in FTL, since she’s a witch?
Yes, I wasn’t really sure if they would make him an animal because he slept with Snow White, but maybe he used to be a man first like Jiminy did.
Well witches do traditionally have familiars, which are often portrayed as being cats. He was her lapdog in SB coz he was her cat in FTL? π This Cheshire Cat theory could work. It’d certainly explain why he was still happily wandering around SB, even with a missing limb, because the Cat could make parts of his body disappear. The Cheshire Cat is famous for his grin, and Mr Anders has a sly one of those himself. I’ve already had Regina pegged as having a tie to Wonderland because I think Cora is QoH. I wonder if the Cat’s ability to appear and disappear anywhere at will meant that he was able to pop back and forth between worlds? Maybe he was Regina’s pet, and she’d send him back and forth between worlds to spy on QoH.
I could definitely see the Cheshire Cat sending messages back and forth between Regina and Cora in their little game of one-upping each other.
If Dr Whale has a Wonderland connection, perhaps he knew Jefferson, (actually, reading up on my Cheshire Cat facts just now, he was the one who told Alice which direction the Hatter lived in), which could explain why Jefferson knew about the hospital dungeon. Perhaps?
Yes, hopefully it would help that make sense too.
Looking at the source of the interview, I see that the word that’s **** out here is a slang word for something rude, but is also another word for cat. Was he just swearing for the helluvit, or was he dropping a hint? π
I think he’s probably trying to be both funny and give people a hint, at least I hope so because I agree with everyone that it was a pretty crude term for him to use. At first I thought it might be a clue to him being Puss in Boots, but he wasn’t from another world. So the Cheshire Cat definitely fits having a tail part and from being a different world, and while I’ve seen it guessed before, it’s not a popular theory in the way that Dr. Whale is Peter Pan, Frankenstein, Prince Eric, etc. were popular.

“Puss in Boots”, is a French literary fairy tale about a cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low-born master.“Puss in Boots” has provided inspiration for composers, choreographers, and other artists over the centuries. The cat appears in the third act pas de caractΓ¨re of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty, for example
& it gets better …
The original fairy tale opens with the third and youngest son of a miller receiving his inheritance β a cat. At first, the youngest son laments, as the eldest brother gains the mill, and the middle brother attains the mules. Now given this cat allows his miller master to gain the hand of a princess in marriage, it’s actually not not a bad fit & ties into the already established FTL story they have – esp if they have Cora marrying that miller care of Puss in Boots! π
Then again I could just be reading WAY to much into things π

We’re Oncers, that’s how we roll. π π
Now I’m wondering if they’ll mash the two up and it’ll turn out that Puss In Boots became the Cheshire Cat.
September 19, 2012 at 4:39 pm #154104PheeParticipantGod help me, I read the plot summary for Puss in Boots on wikipedia and now my imagination isn’t just running away from me, it’s galloping at full speed. π
This is the plot, copied and pasted, but I changed the gender, so it’s about a miller’s daughter, instead of a miller’s son…
The tale opens with the third and youngest [daughter] of a miller receiving [her] inheritance β a cat. At first, the youngest [daughter] laments, as the eldest [sister] gains the mill, and the middle [sister] attains the mules. The feline is no ordinary cat, however, but one who requests and receives a pair of boots. Determined to make his [mistress’] fortune, the cat bags a rabbit in the forest and presents it to the king as a gift from his [mistress], the fictional [Marquise] of Carabas. The cat continues making gifts of game to the king for several months.
One day, knowing the king and his [son] are traveling by coach along the riverside, the cat persuades his [mistress] to remove [her] clothes and enter the river. The cat disposes of his [mistress’] clothing beneath a rock. As the royal coach nears, the cat begins calling for help in great distress, and, when the king stops to investigate, the cat tells him that his [mistress], the [Marquise], has been bathing in the river and robbed of [her] clothing. The king has the young [woman] brought from the river, dressed in a splendid suit of clothes, and seated in the coach with his [son], who falls in love with [her] at once.
The cat hurries ahead of the coach, ordering the country folk along the road to tell the king that the land belongs to the “[Marquise] of Carabas”, saying that if they do not he will cut them into mincemeat. The cat then happens upon a castle inhabited by an ogre who is capable of transforming himself into a number of creatures. The ogre displays his ability by changing into a lion, frightening the cat, who then tricks the ogre into changing into a mouse. The cat then pounces upon the mouse and devours it, revealing his more animalistic instinctual tendencies. The king arrives at the castle that formerly belonged to the ogre, and, impressed with the bogus [Marquise] and [her] estate, gives the [girl] the [prince] in marriage. Thereafter, the cat enjoys life as a great lord who runs after mice only for his own amusement.
I wonder if they could mash that up with the original recipe Rumplestiltskin story where he helps the miller’s daughter marry into royalty?
Sweet, young, poor Cora, grieving for her father and longing for more in life, laments as much to her newly acquired pet cat, the only one she can confess her feelings to. Rumple overhears, interjects, makes the baby deal, but instead of him helping her marry into royalty by spinning straw into gold, he makes the cat magical, and the story plays out similarly to Puss in Boots. When it comes time for Rumple to collect the baby, Cora gets PiB (who is a crafty little bugger) to help her trick Rumple out of the deal. Along comes baby Regina, and she grows up having PiB as a constant companion, as he was her mother’s cat. Eventually, Regina too gains magical power, and in a bid to punish her mother, has her sent to Wonderland. Somehow during this process, either by Regina’s, Cora’s, or Rumple’s hand, PiB has a spell cast on him where he can vanish in one world and materialise in another, meaning he can still be with both of his mistresses, and may play double agent, spying on each of them for the other.
What’s that you were saying before about reading too much into things, Surayya? π
September 19, 2012 at 9:06 pm #154118zlfh4ParticipantHmm, I like the idea of the Cheshire Cat or Puss in Boots, but because of the tail thing, the God complex in Archie’s files, and the fact that his name is Dr. Whale I was thinking King Triton, just because I read his backstory, http://www.theoi.com/Pontios/Triton.html and it seems to make more sense than anything else. I know they said they were pushing the Little Mermaid back but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t still do King Triton especially since he apparently has his own backstory that we never knew about from the Disney movie anyway. If he is a God he could probably play more than one character as well…Just a thought what if Ursula ends up being the daughter of another sea god or I suppose Titan since they were the gods enemies.. We never learned Ursula’s background either, just that she used to live in the palace and Triton banished her. Oh and King Triton is the son of Posiedon. I am reading the Percy Jackson series right now in preparation for the new book in the Lost Heroes series which is coming out on Oct. 2 so I would love to see more Greek mythology or even Roman mythology stuff. And as far as what world he came from maybe it would be Atlantica..
September 19, 2012 at 9:21 pm #154120zlfh4Participantok, so I just was thinking more about what world he comes from, if he is King Triton, and while Atlantica would be fun, I realized that there are mermaids in Peter Pan and Neverland and if he is ruler of the merfolk then it would make since for him to be there…Or he could just be from Mount Olympus too…
September 19, 2012 at 9:54 pm #154122hjbauParticipantBecause of the whole Whale thing it does make me think he is some sort of fish. King Triton isn’t a bad idea. He seems too young to be him though.
September 19, 2012 at 10:17 pm #154125zlfh4ParticipantThat’s the thing about being a god, you can take any form you like… just thought it was interesting..though if he is a god I am wanting to know how he could wind up being a victim of a curse..
September 20, 2012 at 3:54 am #154139surayyaParticipantLOL Phee- if we thought anymore alike we’d be one person π
Sadly When I read the story, just like you I read it as “Daughter” instead of Son π³ π πAlso to add weight to the theory how about this –
Whale may not = Large marine mammal Whale, but hit or beat- as in “He came upstairs & whaled me”.
Or
Whale is a word that describes someone who spends a lot of money in a casino. Whales are also referred to as high rollers.
A gambler making unusually large bets, not necessarily a very good player
Name given to the very high roller, somebody who wagers thousands of dollars on single bet.Im willing to bet that if the name has anything to do with who he is in FTL or where ever he comes from it has nothing to do with marine mammals & more to do with the more obscure meanings for the name.
Personally A gambler would fit nicely with the Puss in Boots theory I think.
