Werewolves are not fairy tale characters and they’ve incorporated them into the series. So why would Dr. Frankenstein be such a stretch? Frankenstein is part of Marvel Comics and Disney owns Marvel. They said we could possibly see Marvel characters showing up. It’s story book characters and not just fairy tale characters. Dr. Whale has a history with EQ. I’m sure EQ would love to have her father Henry & Daniel back.
Werewolves are still considered & defined as mythical creatures though, where as Dr Frankenstein is a science fiction character – I hope knowing that doesnt make me to much of a geek lol! :geek:
My take on it is this- Fairy tales (aka Fantasy) & Myths can be & usually are very similar ie.
Fairy tales are story about magical & imaginary beings & lands.Myths are A traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the world view of a people, as by explaining aspects of the natural world or delineating the psychology, customs, or ideals of society.
On the other hand Science fiction is very, very different- it’s a genre of fiction dealing with imaginary but more or less plausible (or at least non-supernatural) content such as future settings, futuristic science & technology, space travel, parallel universes, aliens & paranormal abilities. These stories involve partially true, partially fictitious laws or theories of science. It should not be completely unbelievable, because it then ventures into the genre fantasy.
So that’s why I personally haven’t jumped on the Dr Frankie band wagon – I’m still living in hope they stay clear of the science fiction stuff. They’ve done an AWESOME! job of weaving a world & characters we all love & can relate to based on magic & myth (fantasy) – adding an entirely different genre into the mix- esp one that cant have magic init by definition, I think would be a very big risk to take (esp given they’ve only just scratched the surface of all the fairy tale & mythical characters available to use) & could kill the show dead 😐
I know they do nods to Lost & they did a nod to Nurse Ratched- but those are small or minor things- not major/serious game players in the story.
At least that’s my thoughts on the subject lol 🙂

Maybe there is another world that combines science and magic (like alchemy) to discover the Philosopher’s Stone, which can grant immortality. That’d be an interesting thing to see them do with Dr. Frakenstein, and would be a deviation from the original book. Yet, I’d also be happy to find out if Dr. Whale is someone else completely and am happy to be surprised.
PriceofMagic wrote: Also what if some of the clues we have about Whale’s identity are red herrings. We assume the name “Whale” has some significance to his identity but what if it doesn’t. “David Nolan” has no significance to Charming
I agree that the “doctor” might not have any significance to his fairy-tale identity, except that it could correspond to some kind of title of distinction. Whale could refer to the size of his ego, and not his necessarily his name or identity. In the podcast, they commented that David could be a reference the biblical King David, who started out as a shepherd boy, just like Prince Charming did in FTL.

Regarding non-fairytale and/or more real world storybook characters, Kitsis and Horowitz confirmed that the nurse in the hospital dungeon was Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, a book set in a real world mental hospital, which was published in…*googling*…1962. So a character from a science fiction novel from the 1800s certainly wouldn’t be off limits.
I don’t think that they are really Nurse Ratched though. That is not like the nurses real name in fairytale land. I do think they were doing an homage to that movie, but not that those characters were actually that. That is entirely different then making Whale Frankenstein. That would not be just a homage to the character. It just seems out of the realm of what the show is trying to do to me. I may be wrong, we will see.
I really hope not because this would be worse for me then Bae being Henry’s father.

Quite right, Phee 🙂 The custodian is also a take on Chief Bromden from the movie. I just about chocked on my coffee when I first saw them on screen. I keep waiting for someone to offer him a piece of Juicy Fruit Gum. LOL!

True, but the nurse and the janitor or whoever he was probably won’t be seen again. They were a nice little nod to the book, but they weren’t important characters, any other character could have filled in for them.
I really hope that you are wrong about that. Chief, I don’t really care for. But that… Bizarre nurse + the strange exchange that happened between her and Regina. I’m not saying she should become an important or anything like that but I kinda wanna know a bit more about her.
September 23, 2012 at 5:24 pm #154421gypsyParticipantConsidering these are the LOST writers, and LOST incorporated Science/Faith…it’s not a far stretch for OUAT to incorporate Science into Fantasy. Although, I do agree, Frankenstein, in it’s era, was not considered Science.
September 23, 2012 at 5:37 pm #154422angiebelleParticipantI don’t care for the theory that Dr. Whale is Frankenstein. That book does not fit in the least within the world we have been presented. The character of Dr. Frankenstein has no reason to be in an enchanted forest. He is from a completely different era and setting.

The enchanted forest is but one world. The series will be exploring many worlds and they’ve already confirmed that the curse has brought all the worlds together. We’re already seeing time travel so I wouldn’t count on any particular era or setting from here on out.
I think they are going to follow what the fans like but let’s face it, these writers are going to have a blast scripting in their own favourite stories and characters. Anything from any STORY BOOK is fair game.

September 23, 2012 at 6:36 pm #154425hjbauParticipantI disagree that anything from any book is fair game. I think they have to keep it in mythical realm. They can’t do like comic book characters. There has to be a line in the sand. And things like Dracula or Frankenstein seem to be silly and would cross the line, in my opinion.
September 23, 2012 at 7:04 pm #154428angiebelleParticipantWell, see that’s just it- I don’t think of Frankenstein as a STORY book. It’s an adult Victorian novel. I’m not saying I’m counting it out completely, but I’m not thrilled with the idea and hope they don’t go that route.
Sure, any world is fair game technically, but there still has to be a connection somewhere. It has to make sense. If it’s arbitrary, the story loses credibility.
