I disagree that anything from any book is fair game. I think they have to keep it in mythical realm. They can’t do like comic book characters. There has to be a line in the sand. And things like Dracula or Frankenstein seem to be silly and would cross the line, in my opinion.
I think Dracula could be done, as vampires originate from folk legends so it’s not like Frankenstein which originated from the book. I agree with you about the comic book characters, I don’t want to see Spiderman running around town.

They made Rumplestiltskin and the Beast one in the same…..and they did it flawlessly and made it believable. There is no such thing as a line in the sand to these guys….(example: LOST). They haven’t disappointed me yet. I have complete trust in them. If Dr. Whale does turn out to be Frankenstein, I’m sure it will be done in a way that fits in perfectly with the storyline.
September 23, 2012 at 9:18 pm #154431angiebelleParticipantOh, I believe they can make anything they want to work, work. I trust them. I’m not saying it’s impossible- only that I don’t like the idea as it stands, and I don’t think it’s likely…it would be a real stretch to make it work- rather like shoehorning it in. But I guess we will have to wait and see.
Everyone always references making Rumple the Beast…but they *didn’t* make Rumple the Beast, not really. The Beast doesn’t exist in this version of the story. Rumple is playing that role, but he is a completely different character with a different background and different motives. The Belle and Rumple love story is one of my favorite arcs though. Honestly, every surprise turn they’ve done has worked perfectly and has flowed organically with the show. They don’t usually pull something from way out in left field.

hjbau, Kitsis and Horowitz have they themselves stated that we could see Marvel Comic characters popping up in the series. Those are their words, not mine. Disney owns Marvel so it wouldn’t be a problem.
Time and time again, they’ve told us, ANY STORY BOOK CHARACTER. Disney obviously considers Frankenstein story book material or they wouldn’t have released the animated children’s movie Frankenweenie. Twice I might add. Back in 1984 and a newer version out in theatres Oct. 5th.
Kitsis & Horowitz can make any fictional character work. That’s their special magic. Personally, I’d get bored with the series if we only saw the nice little fairy tale characters. I say bring on the unexpected and let;s all get spooked!

Honestly i think vampires are out simply because of all the vampire stuff there is. Even on Buffy when they had Dracula they made fun of him. Talking wolves have been part of many mythical stories so making Red the wolf does not seem so much of a stretch. She is cursed to turn into a wolf.
Also there are so lines in the sand. They have said stuff like not bring people back from the dead already. All good world building has lines in the sand that is what makes it good.
They certainly existed in LOST. The only abilities people had were things like in peoples minds, talking to the dead and whatever Walt was doing, astroprojecting or whatever that was. No one ever through fire from their hands or anything. I don’t think that would have worked for that world where the biggest mystery was the island.
PS. When did they say they would bring comic book characters?
September 23, 2012 at 9:43 pm #154436gypsyParticipantI meant no line in the sand when it comes to introducing characters from many different genre’s. Of course they have to have ‘rules’, but, rules that they, themselves make.
September 23, 2012 at 11:31 pm #154438angiebelleParticipantNice little fairytale characters? Have you actually read any? Fairytales are some of the most gothic, fascinating stories out there! There are volumes of studies on them. And the writers have an entire library to choose from.
Frankenweenie is not a literal translation of Frankenstein- it’s a contemporary children’s story that is a nod to it.
I’m not sure I entirely believe them about the idea of introducing Marvel comic characters. I’m not convinced they would fit very well in the show either.
I mean, I’m not going to stop watching this show if they take it in such a strange direction…but I think the writers are too smart to do that. The show is going to get awfully complicated if they keep adding other worlds to pull from. Frankenstein doesn’t belong in the forest, so he would have to be pulled from a whole other portal. Ditto for the superheroes.
September 24, 2012 at 1:09 am #154441gypsyParticipantDoes anyone even realize the significance of the literary choices these writers choose to include? Just going by LOST, and the influence the novels that were depicted during the entire run of that show, should give ppl some idea. OUAT may seem like a show about Fairy Tales….well, that’s like saying LOST was a show about a plane crash

once again Gypsy you speak the truth.
If LOST was about letting go, could Once Upon a Time be about holding on?
September 24, 2012 at 2:36 am #154444gypsyParticipantThat’s a good observation, Marilou. Henry is holding on to hope. In the beginning, Emma was trying to hold on to reality. Regina is holding on to revenge. Gold/Rumple seems to be holding on to guilt. There is still the element of good vs evil. Seems to be the underlying basis in OUAT as well as LOST.
