Well they also said Once wasn’t going to be like Lost at all. It isn’t the same OTT mind bender as Lost was made to be.
They said they’d have nod’s to lost in Once because they knew their roots – not because they are trying to make a fantasy version of it.I personally dont connect Lost in any great way to Once, so I guess that gives me an outside perspective π
Rumps & Beast also come from Fantasy not different genres so merging them isn’t a big deal, same with Red riding hood- they just tweaked the story & again made 2 characters one.
They didn’t add an entirely different character from an entirely different genera into the middle of an established bunch of fantasy characters.
Nods are one thing, big or major roles are another.

OUAT has that, too, for those who choose to dig deeper, ‘analyze’ the clues and theorize. The difference is, OUAT can stand on it’s own, as well, for those who just want to watch and be entertained. Not catching the nods/clues- won’t make it hard to follow, as was the case with LOST. As far as genre’s, K&H have repeatedly said it’s about ‘stories’. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview comparing OUAT to LOST:
Question: Okay, Iβll bite β whatβs the big Lost-esque twist coming up on Once Upon a Time involving Mary Margaret and Emma?
Ausiello: Remember how Lost would forever find new angles from which to tell a story? And you know how Once already uses flashbacks to the fairytale land that was? Well, you didnβt think theyβd leave the narrative as linear as that, did you?Read More at: http://tvline.com/2012/08/28/walking-dead-season-3-death-spoiler/#utm_source=copypaste&utm_campaign=referral
September 24, 2012 at 10:15 am #154456surayyaParticipantThat is just filming style tho.
What we are getting at (at least what I’m getting at anyway) is they didnt introduced mythical creatures- say dragons or unicorns for instance, into Lost did they. Why? Because it didn’t fit the genre of that particular show- I know I watched Lost πThat is the point- it’s a fantasy not Sci-Fi show they are making now.
At the end of the day anyone can over analyze a show & ‘find’ clues hidden there π – Yes K&H have given us nods & easter eggs, but they don’t impact the over all structure of the show.
The clues/hints are not really any different than any other serial TV show, that is made with an overall direction in mind- you dont need those clues to watch the show, they are just there so nothing that comes along is totally out of the blue & since Dr Whale has done nothing major that we’ve seen when presented with a patient, I just don’t see how if they intended us to ‘buy’ into Dr Frankie from the very beginning, they’d have left out not 1, not 2 but 3 opportunities to at least have him ‘DO’ something, or even to suggest he is either a genius being held back or has immense skill as a doc/surgeon.
I do know what you mean about K&H- they are very good at weaving their personal interests into a story line π
So that’s my 2 cents worth & it’s not like we have to agree on this π
I think this will be one of those ‘sit back & hope you enjoy the ride’ kinda things & until then we just have to respect others opinions & agree to disagree on some things … esp when we are all borderline fanatical Oncers π πSeptember 24, 2012 at 11:21 am #154459gypsyParticipantWell, I agree with you about one thing- being ‘fanatical Oncers’ π And, of course, everyone is entitled to our own opinion. That’s what makes theorizing fun. I love hearing other ppl’s take on things π even if I don’t agree with all of them, there are some really thoughtful and intelligent theories out there π
September 24, 2012 at 12:33 pm #154461hjbauParticipantYes, i like how you said that. This is fantasy and not science fiction.
September 24, 2012 at 3:01 pm #154469gypsyParticipant“Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus”- Prometheus is a Greek myth, as well as Poseidon, who is Triton’s father, who, in turn is Ariel’s father. The little mermaid is supposed to be introduced to the show. While she is a fairy tale, there is Greek mythology woven into her story. K&H have already included the Siren into the plot, which is also Greek mythology. Frankenstein is considered one of the earliest science fiction works, but, that is the exact opposite of what Mary Shelley intended. She considered it ‘anti-science fiction’. That was her whole point in using nature- weather, and the elements- to create her monster. There was much debate, at the time, as to what genre Frankenstein actually fell under. I’m not trying to be ‘right’ or shove my opinion down anyone’s throat, or anything like that π I’m just pointing out that it isn’t as far a stretch as it may seem, if looked at from a different perspective.
That’s just my opinion. I feel it supports the Frankenstein theory.
Whether he turns out to even be Frankenstein or not, remains to be seen. He may be someone else, entirely, at this point. There are clues and facts which support a few other very good theories. I just like the Frankenstein one best πSeptember 24, 2012 at 4:31 pm #154472PriceofMagicParticipantWhat if Whale’s “God complex” is actually because he is an actual god?
I think some of the “clues” we’ve been given aren’t actual clues at all. I believe Archie’s file on Whale on the untold stories thing does give us some proper clues whilst the singlebrooke dating video perhaps not so much. They’re going to want to keep Whale’s identity a secret until the reveal so they’re not going to be handing out clues like there’s no tomorrow. The general Once viewer probably won’t bother with the untold stories things but the Singlebrooke dating video may be more viewed. The more “fanatical oncers” are the ones more likely to do the untold stories so that would be the perfect place to hint at his identitiy.
All magic comes with a price!

I am a huge fan of him being Dr. Frankenstein, but, what if Dr. Whale is Marvel Comic’s Dr. Strange. There are lots of things that fit and lots of hints that could point to that being his altar ego. I think it could be a very real possibility.
Here is a little Marvel bio:
Circa 1963, Strange was in a car accident that severely damaged the nerves in his hands, ending his surgical career. Too vain to accept positions as a consultant or assistant, Strange sought a cure and pursued every available treatment, legitimate or not, soon depleting his fortune; in months he was reduced to a derelict, performing shady medical procedures that barely paid his bar tabs. After hearing rumors of the mystical Ancient One, a desperate Strange pawned his last possessions for a ticket to the East and found the Ancient One’s Tibetan palace. At first annoyed when the Ancient One refused to cure him, Strange was later astonished to see the sorcerer attacked by mystic forces. Upon learning that the Ancient One was Earth’s magical defender and that the attack on him came from his pupil Mordo, Strange tried to warn him, but Mordo mystically prevented Strange from doing so. For the sake of the Ancient One and the world, Strange acted unselfishly for the first time in years, vowing to learn magic himself so he could counter Mordo and his ilk. He offered himself as a disciple to the Ancient One, who accepted, having known of Mordo’s treachery all along. The Ancient One spent years instructing Strange in the art of sorcery, teaching him how to tap the innate mystic powers of both himself and the world around him, as well as how to invoke the power of awesome entities, or Principalities, who resided in their own realms, most notably the three benign beings known as the Vishanti. A few years after Strange’s arrival, Mordo left to seek greater power, and would often clash with Strange in the future. Strange’s guilt over his earlier mistakes weighed heavily upon him over the years, and not all of his early recollections can be trusted.
During his years of study and early activity, Strange befriended many sorcerers around the world, including Lord Julian Phyffe and Sir Clive Bentley of Great Britain; Cardinal Alfeo Spinosa and Count Carezzi of Italy; Omar Karindu, Rama Kaliph, and Turhan Barim of the Middle East; Wai Chee Yee and Sen-Yu of Asia; and Aleister Kane, Kenneth Ward, and Frank Brukner of America. Other immortal adventurers, such as Immortalis and Terror, Inc., regarded his ascent with skepticism. Strange also found allies among more earthly heroes, aiding the adventurer Black Fox in at least two adventures. No later than the 1970s, Strange returned to America, becoming a mystic consultant in New York’s Greenwich Village. He was joined by Wong, the descendant of a line that had served the Ancient One for centuries, who became his servant and friend. Strange’s earliest foes included the demonic Bottle Imp; a nightmarish manifestation of the entity KhLΞg; and the demon Nightmare, who preyed upon humanity’s dreams and became one of Strange’s bitterest enemies. Developing a mysterious reputation like the Ancient One before him, Strange became an occasional consultant to local and even federal authorities.

I don’t have time for a long post but some of the things that jump out are there was a dark soul around the fire that had a helmet very similar to the red cape that Dr. Strange wears. Maybe he is the one who gave a red cape to Ruby, He is described as a womanizer. He has dark magic and has befriended all the sorcerers. He has a brother named Victor. The “frame” clue could refer to comic book frame. Carnation could refer to a comic book character being played by an actor. In the preview where Regina tries to use magic on the mob, there is a character (looks like Hansel and Gretel’s father) who makes the horned hand sign, which is the sign that Dr. Strange makes. I don’t have time to list more but it does look like it could be a possibility. In the episode where Regina is talking to Belle on the road, Regina has a red stripe in her hair. Dr. Strange has a stripe in his hair. Also Regina has on this high lapel cape with gloves that has a similar feel to his style of dress. He lives at the Sanctum Sanctorum and there is a furnace room in the basement.

I’m not saying I am convinced, but it is an interesting possibility.
September 24, 2012 at 10:30 pm #154495hjbauParticipantTo me, Greek mythology and such is still in the realm of fantasy. And regardless of what Frankenstein may have been considered at the time, i would consider it science fiction horror and to me science fiction is outside of the realm of what they should do in fact. They can nod at the science fiction, but should not actually have those characters be those people.
September 25, 2012 at 1:06 am #154503nonnieParticipantDidn’t Disney do a series of animal stories in animation…. Fox and the Hound , 101 Dalmatians, and others… maybe he was one of those.
