I’m going to go out of limb and suggest that the ring previously belonged to Merlin. Don’t ask how that ring fell into Hook’s possession over the years, but I have a gut feeling due to Elliot Knight teasing that there’s an important connection between Merlin and Hook. Plus, we saw Merlin make a ring for Nimue in the same episode Hook’s ring was introduced.

Yes, I forgot about Elliot Knight’s teasing. That’s probably it. If I had to make a wild stab in the dark, the ring changed hands a few times. For example: belonged to Merlin but somehow fell into PapaJones’s hand and PapaJones left it to Young!Killian (or Young!Liam and then Lieutenant!Killian took it off Liam’s body)

^ That makes sense, especially since Hook was probably born at least a hundred years after Merlin was treed. (Or something?) 😉

^ Though thinking about it, we don’t actually know how long Nimue was the Dark One before she treed Merlin. Some time might have passed there.

But there did still have to be a while in between, for all those Dark Ones between her and Zoso and then Rumple. *timeline headache* 🙄

If the ring passed from Merlin to Papa Jones to Killian and then eventually Emma, I wonder if it really does have the power to keep people alive. When Papa Jones gave it to killian perhaps he died shortly after, and then Hook gives it to Emma…and perhaps he bites the dust soon after after and now Emma has to do something to save him.

I just think it’s odd that Hook believes a ring has kept him alive all these years. Maybe we are thinking too hard. Maybe this is just Hook’s version of a lucky sock.

^ LOL, it probably is his version of a lucky sock!  😆

But on the other hand, headcannon:

Long ago, Papa Jones knew he was going to be in danger (going to war, threat on his life, something).  He had also heard that there was a Wizard who grants … favors to those in need.  (As Merlin seemed to be doing when he met Nimue.)  And so Papa Jones, or possibly a loved one, journeyed to See the Wizard 😉 in to ask for a charm that would protect him.  He must have been worthy, because Merlin crafted him this ring.

Papa Jones may have then lived for several hundred years before his sons were born.  When they were of age and went off sailing into danger, he gave the ring to Killian (and not Liam for some reason.)  After which, Papa Jones probably died, having lived a full life and raising two sons.  🙂

In my theory the ring works by somehow giving luck or changing fate. It does not directly heal or prevent harm, it just makes deadly things … not happen!  Or someone is there to save the wearer … because they are.

For example Hook was lucky enough to be sent to Neverland in the first place.  Then he was able to acquire a magic bean to return there.  Liam tried the dreamshade, Hook did not.  Emma has saved Hook on several occasions, even temporarily losing her magic to do so.

Sounds like a perfect string of luck to me!  😀

But Merlin was tree’d long before Hook (and his Papa) were alive?

Though, I do no put it past this show to have a tree craft a ring.

    OH GOD.

Merlin’s the GIVING TREE. He let PapaJones hack off a branch to make that ring!

    Sure. Why not.

Well, we still don’t know how Merlin appeared as a movie theater usher in our world back in the 1980s, when he was a tree. The other option is Merlin could have had his Apprentice give PapaJones the ring. The Apprentice has been doing all of Merlin’s dirty work during tree time, after all.

He told us it didn’t matter! So I’d say we’ll never know. *twitch*

    That sounds more likely.
