No but seriously. What did the Apprentice do when Merlin was tree’d? Did he have visions in which Merlin told him what to do? How did he live so long? Why did he start to age? And WHERE ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH DID THAT HAT/HAT ROOM COME FROM?! AND WHY WAS MERLIN BLUE SMOKE?!

Looking back at the one scene in Season 4 where the Apprentice talks to Merlin, Merlin’s smoke was coming out of a cauldron. So I’m guessing the Apprentice was using the magical mushroom method to communicate with Merlin this entire time. He was chosen by Merlin, after all.
Yeah, why did Merlin’s mansion suddenly appear if he was a tree for the past centuries? They made it seem like the sorcerer was in town or something and yet…nothing.

Sure. Why not. I mean the mushroom only came into existence this season, has never been mentioned ever before this season and Merlin lift a voicemail sans blue smoke, but I guess that Magical McGuffin works as an explanation.

The hat is anyone’s guess. Maybe he originally created the hat to absorb Nimue’s darkness, and realized it wouldn’t work? However, that would result in another contradiction, given that the Apprentice tried to do the same with Rumple’s darkness.

As to the hat… It looks a bit like Orion’s Belt charm from Men in Black. So if it ever shows up again, it just might turn out to be a portal. Maybe they’ll need to reach the Underworld.
Not sure about the ring. I also think it’s more of a luck bending ring — or maybe not magical at all, but something that its owner believes to be magical.
