There was a bit of a discussion in the Initial Reactions thread for The Outsider about the license plate on his car, and I just remembered this thread was here, and the info fits perfectly. Hopefully the other posters don’t mind me copying and pasting their thoughts in here. It was some cool stuff that shouldn’t get buried in the other thread, and I didn’t wanna take credit for other people’s input, so…

Ok…have to rethink my logic here and bet 2kfl 138 is a reference to Peter Pan…
I agree. One interpretation of 2KFL 138 as a vanity plate is “took flight”
Good thinking! There have also been theories that he could be the Wizard of Oz, who is another character who “took flight”. I’m more inclined to the Peter theory though, (even though part of me would still love Bae to be Peter).

After reading this, my first thought was, “It’s a shame that last digit is an 8 because the MGM movie The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939.” Then I remembered (and confirmed on Wikipedia) that MGM bought the rights to the story and began production in January of 1938 – “Took flight in 1-’38” : 2KFL 138
😮 Nice detective work there! I’m now officially seriously considering the Wizard theory for him. He doesn’t really strike me as being old enough, but I guess we don’t know how time works in Oz yet and/or if/when the Wizard came back to our world.
Edited to add that I was just poking around on wikipedia to see if there was a Pennsylvania connection to Wizard of Oz somehow, considering that’s the state that was on the plate. L Frank Baum, author of Wizard of Oz, his father’s name was Benjamin:
Benjamin Baum was a wealthy German American businessman, originally a barrel maker, who had made his fortune in the oil fields of Pennsylvania.

So unless and until someone can twist that license plate to relate to something else, I’m putting my money on Ethan’s character being someone Oz related, if not the Wizard himself.

Great detective work. Would be interesting for the writers to weave that fairytale into the storyline. There is a new film called “The Great and Powerful Oz” coming out in March of this year, so, it’ll be a timely connection. The movie’s focus is on the wizard, rather than on Dorothy. January 15, 2013 at 10:33 pm #168583TheGoldenKeyParticipantI think Embry would make a wonderful Wizard of Oz. He did star as Frick in the TV series The Witches of Oz. The only problem I have with it is his age. In 2×05, The Doctor, we know that Dorothy was already in Oz and we heard about the Ruby Slippers. That means the Wizard was there too. If Embry is the Wizard, and he came from outside, he would have aged over the last 28 years. We know he was an adult male when he first went to Oz. So that would put him in his early 50’s. Age doesn’t seem to match up as Embry is only 34. Unless, time froze for 28 years in all the other realms as well. The age thing with Bae, Neal and Embry/Barrett make me want to tear my hair out! 😆

January 15, 2013 at 11:52 pm #168603RumplesGirlKeymasterCouldn’t Embry have come forward in time? We know the hat moves through time and space, so why not another enchanted object? The wizard got back to our world via balloon (which originally crashed landed into Oz…connection to the car maybe?) so maybe he moved both spatially and in time.

I’m liking this line of thinking, would explain the age glitch for sure.
January 16, 2013 at 2:11 pm #168653RumplesGirlKeymasterSo, if we assume he is the Wizard of Oz AND he traveled here across time, then the question is why is he coming to SB. I think if he is the Wizard he has a connection to Cora. Cora told Hook that she had traveled to many worlds, but so far we’ve only seen her in FTL and WL. What if during the time between being pushed through the mirror and the curse, she traveled to Oz and met the Wizard and somehow they formed an alliance. After the Dorothy incident, the Wizard left and came here, waiting for Cora. This may be a big stretch, but it might answer why he was traveling through that part of Maine.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 16, 2013 at 3:11 pm #168664PheeParticipantI’ve seen the theory that Cora could have been Oz’s Wicked Witch. Hadn’t put much stock in the idea, but might have to give it some consideration now.

That is an interesting theory. In We Are Both when Regina got the spell book from Rumple, when he warned her about the spells she said “I don’t care if it turns me green.” At the time, I thought it was just an Oz reference. However, consider this, that scene was about all how Regina was becoming like Cora. There’s fridge logic for you. Suddenly Cora being the Wicked Witch of Oz is quite plausible. What’s the odds that she was the reason why the tinman had no heart, she ripped it out of him.

Great point RumplesGirl 🙂 I certainly hope that’s the case. I’d love to see him as the Wizard of Oz.
