I’ve seen the theory that Cora could have been Oz’s Wicked Witch. Hadn’t put much stock in the idea, but might have to give it some consideration now.
That is an interesting theory. In We Are Both when Regina got the spell book from Rumple, when he warned her about the spells she said “I don’t care if it turns me green.” At the time, I thought it was just an Oz reference. However, consider this, that scene was about all how Regina was becoming like Cora. There’s fridge logic for you. Suddenly Cora being the Wicked Witch of Oz is quite plausible. What’s the odds that she was the reason why the tinman had no heart, she ripped it out of him.
You’d think that the Tinman having no heart must be related to the heart ripping we’ve seen so far. We can rule out Regina doing it, because she didn’t have the skill yet at the time of Dorothy’s story, as evidenced by Jefferson telling Rumple that the slippers he was after had moved on.
So either Rumple had been to Oz at some point before that, and had ripped out Tinman’s heart, or the only other suspect is Cora having been there.
Another suggestion I saw regarding the Wicked Witch theory was that she was protecting herself from getting wet by the rain with an umbrella at the bottom of the beanstalk. But that argument isn’t really relevant now, given that she had no fear of unplugging a lake and jumping into a portal through it.

After the Dorothy incident, the Wizard left and came here, waiting for Cora. This may be a big stretch, but it might answer why he was traveling through that part of Maine.
Yes, there’ll have to be some explanation as to why he was heading into town at this particular point in time. I’d previously been thinking that Embry’s character was someone who knows Neal, so the curse being broken would explain the timing of his arrival. But maybe it’s Cora’s arrival that’s lured him there?
I’d posted in another thread, wondering if Cora could have orchestrated the car going out of control because Hook was about to get blasted by Rumple and she didn’t want that to happen so she used the approaching car to interrupt proceedings. But maybe, if she did have anything to do with that car crash, (which she may not have, but now that I’ve had the idea, I’m just gonna run with it for a moment), it was because she sensed her old buddy the Wizard was coming, and she wanted to eliminate him so he didn’t get in the way of her master plan. Perhaps?

January 17, 2013 at 1:59 pm #168797TheGoldenKeyParticipantCora brings the giant to Storybrooke, where he unleashes vengeance on the town.
Greg asks Belle what she saw on the night of his accident.
Emma and Henry go with Mr. Gold to search for his son.
Anton the Giant befriends humans. So now we have a first name. Will Barrett be his last name or was that just used in the casting call to throw us off?
I was also under the impression that he would be in a coma for the rest of the season. Does anyone recall reading that somewhere? I can’t seem to remember where I initially heard that or find any links about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 😀

Could be his surname I suppose, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just a fake name. Seems they’ve done that a couple times for casting calls this season.

I think, and don’t quote me, but that may have just been speculation, because if his identity wasn’t gonna be revealed right away, the best way to keep it secret is if he’s unconscious in hospital. Perhaps.
January 18, 2013 at 12:57 am #168902TheGoldenKeyParticipantHere’s a spoiler interview and they mention Ethan Embry’s character. Sooooo mysterious, 😆 😆 😆
What can say about Ethan Embry’s upcoming role?
KITSIS: It’s really good.
HOROWITZ: He’s great, and you’ll see him soon. That’s pretty much all we want to say. But, we’re very happy to have him and we’re really pleased with his work.
KITSIS: This will help, his character’s name is “Mysterious Stranger.” He’ll be both mysterious and strange. He’ll get a name pretty soon, and we’re excited to tell that story, as well.
HOROWITZ: The less said about Ethan Embry, the better. In general.

January 18, 2013 at 11:54 pm #169029TheGoldenKeyParticipantEthan Embry has been given a full name. It is Greg Mendell. Here is a link with the credits. http://onceuponatime-fans.com/
So Barrett was a fake name to throw us off. Most likely used because of David Barrett, one of the show’s directors.

So that's really odd. The first thing that came to mind is the father of genetics, Gregor Mendel. But why in the world would they be naming this guy after him??
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 19, 2013 at 3:51 am #169056TheGoldenKeyParticipantMaybe because he’s a professor of science? That’s what I thought when I read his last name. Professor of Science equals Professor Marvel/Wizard of OZ ? 😕

Well, Mendel did do his experiments mainly with pea plants, which are green. Emeralds are green, too, and so is the Emerald City. Or not. It might have been just the green glasses everybody wore, if I remember the book correctly.
I wonder if there is a connection between him and Whale/Frankenstein, since Whale wants to save his brother who, I assume, is genetically related to him. Also, there appeared to be a boatload oF Wizard of Oz references during the Whale is Frankenstein episode.
On another note, the first ever American hot air balloon ride took place in Pennsylvania. The car is from PA. The Wizard of Oz travels by hot air balloon.

Wikipedia sez…
In the first book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the walls are green, but the city itself is not. However, when they enter, everyone in the Emerald City is made to wear green-tinted eyeglasses; this is explained as an effort to protect their eyes from the “brightness and glory” of the city, but in effect makes everything appear green when it is, in fact, “no more green than any other city.” This is yet another “humbug” created by the Wizard. In this book, the Wizard also describes the city as having been built for him within a few years after he arrived. It was he who decreed that all who are in the Emerald City must wear green eyeglasses, since the first thing he noticed about Oz after he landed in his hot-air balloon was how green and pleasant the country was.
In the second book, The Marvelous Land of Oz, however, the characters are required to wear the glasses at first, but half way through the book, no more eyeglasses appear, no more mention is made of the brilliance, but the city is still described as green. This is continued throughout the series. The only allusions to the earlier conception appeared in The Road to Oz, where the Little Guardian of the Gates wears green spectacles, the only character to do so.
The Oz books describe the Emerald City as being built of green glass, emeralds, and other jewels. In the earlier books, it was described as completely green, but in later ones, green was merely the predominating color; the buildings were decorated with gold as well, and people added other colors to their costumes. In the first book, one scene of the Emerald City is of particular note in the development of Oz: Dorothy sees rows of shops, selling green articles of every variety, and a vendor of green lemonade, from whom children bought it with green pennies. This contrasts with the later description of Oz, in which money does not feature.
In summary, folks in Oz dig the colour green.
I wonder if there is a connection between him and Whale/Frankenstein, since Whale wants to save his brother who, I assume, is genetically related to him. Also, there appeared to be a boatload oF Wizard of Oz references during the Whale is Frankenstein episode.
Since The Doctor, I’ve been wondering if Frankenstein had been in Oz with Jefferson, (when he went there to get stuff for Rumple), because he wanted to meet the famous Wizard who has a reputation for giving people missing body parts.
On another note, the first ever American hot air balloon ride took place in Pennsylvania. The car is from PA. The Wizard of Oz travels by hot air balloon.
Interesting fact about the hot air balloon! All these little tidbits…I’m on the verge of officially committing to TeamWizard for this guy.
