Though Once Upon a Time has not yet been renewed for a seventh season, a potential season 7 could see big changes coming to Storybrooke.
At the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Tuesday, EW sat down with ABC Chief Channing Dungey to expand on her earlier comments about the future of Once, particularly whether fans should expect any radical changes to the show in a potential seventh season.
“[Executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis] would be looking for the seventh season to be a springboard in a new direction from a narrative standpoint,” Dungey tells EW, “which doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re not bringing cast back, it’s just how do you kind of hit the reset button in a way that gives you opportunity to expand the stories that we’re telling?”

Agree. They should really be looking at Season 7 as a conclusion going forward, and not “how do we continue to milk things?” With the way ratings are, I really don’t think that they have more than one more Season. However, based on Channing Dungey’s earlier comments, it does look like the network at least wants to give the show a proper conclusion when the time comes.
Yeah, so [executive producers] Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, as veterans of Lost, are fully conscious of all these things. They came in and sat with us recently to talk about what their ideas would be for a season 7 and we’re in conversations about that right now. But I think this is absolutely a show that is beloved to us and if and when we decide to end it, we want to do it the right way and really give the fans the ending that they deserve. But I will say that Eddie and Adam have some really good ideas for future seasons.
Regardless of how each of us currently think of the show, I imagine we would all support that route. I for one don’t want the show cancelled at the last minute, without enough time for Adam and Eddy to prepare a conclusion. Ending on a cliffhanger is the worst fate of any show.

A part of me almost interpreted this as the 7th season would be a set up for a spinoff. But we all know how that worked out last time.

“Eddie and Adam came in and talked with me right before the holiday about what some of their potential ideas might be for Season 7,” ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey told Deadline at TCA today. “There was some interesting stuff, we gave them some feedback, and they are now working and are going to come back and sit with me in a couple of weeks. I think that, having had worked on Lost, they have a very good sense of the engagement with fans and wanting to end the story in the right way.”
It will be after that meeting that Dungey and her team make a decision whether there will be a Season 7 of Once Upon A Time. But “regardless of what we decide to do at the end of this season, I think they think they would put a little bit of a bow here, and then there is a next piece that comes after that, so they are trying to figure out what that is and how that works.”
Dungey declined to comment whether that “next piece” would be a different incarnation of Once, a spinoff or a something else. But it’s clear that the series, which has reinvented itself a number of times, may be heading for its biggest reinvention yet as the show’s main storyline comes to an end this season. “There will be a little bit of closure in this particular narrative regardless of what happens with Season 7,” Dungey told Deadline.

Now I’m confused. So are they planning to end the main current storyline this Season, with plans of doing some sort of reboot for a potential Season 7? If that’s really what’s going on, it seems like maybe 1) Adam and Eddy want to be prepared in case they don’t get renewed. 2) If they do get renewed, certain cast members like Bobby and Gosh may not return, so they have plans to change things up to counter that. Still not quite sure what this all means.
January 10, 2017 at 7:16 pm #332527MichaelBlockedDeadline is speculating on the quotes from Dungey about the main narrative wrapping. Dungey said this season would wrap with a bow regardless of s7. I think she’s referring to all the arcs of this season and maybe the prospect that there won’t be some big cliffhanger at the end of the S6 finale.
I think we are definitely losing Bobby and Emilie as well. I could see this season ending with them getting Gideon back as a baby and deciding to leave town and start a life together again with their son in the land without magic. I could see them maybe making an appearance here or two in S7.Ginny and Josh may just become guest stars for S7.
I don’t see us losing Jen, Colin, or Lana.
I think S7 will be the last.January 10, 2017 at 9:31 pm #332530RumplesGirlKeymasterI’ve been convinced we would lose Bobby for awhile now, so I could see him depart this year for good.

Ehhh. This one I have trouble seeing. I agree that their roles have become tiny and they are really just “hope!” “Snow! I’ll find you!” over and over but I don’t think A and E would want to lose them. And a paycheck is a paycheck.

She wanted off this show before Season 5 and they talked her back into it with the Dark Swan stuff which nothing came off. We have no idea what that did for her contract though. She could have signed on for many more years with that. I definitely think Robert is done. He has been done since they killed off Neal.
January 10, 2017 at 10:10 pm #332534MichaelBlockedThat’s a lot of speculation considering JMO sill talka lovingly about the show and Emma and is doing a ton of conventions.
January 10, 2017 at 10:30 pm #332535RumplesGirlKeymasterI don’t really know if JMo wants off, but I do think her passions are shifting a bit. She speaks so much about how much she loves directing. I could see her wanting to move into that when the show is done and over.
