The upcoming sixth season of Once Upon a Time is set to look very different from what fans have become accustomed to over the last few years.

During a panel for their upcoming Freeform show Dead of Summer, moderated by this reporter, executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis revealed that the storyline for season 6 won’t be split into two halves, with the story of villain Hyde (Sam Witwer) not necessarily set to be wrapped up in the first 11 episodes.

“This season is going to be different from past because it’s not going to be Hyde comes to town, we fight with him for 10 episodes, and then in the winter finale, he dies and we move on,” Kitsis said. “We are changing around what we’re doing this year and going back to that season 1 mentality of small town stories and smaller arcs.”

Added Horowitz: “We’re also planning a 22-episode story as opposed to breaking it up into two halves this year. It’s been really exciting and fun.”

In season 6, the show will be exploring more tales from the Land of Untold Stories, which opens up new and endless possibilities for storytelling. (Check out some of those possibilities here.) But that doesn’t mean the heroes and villains we’ve come to know and love are taking a backseat — in fact, it’s the opposite.

“That’s actually providing the opportunity to look at our characters in a different way,” Horowitz said. “What’s really exciting about it is, for season 6, really being in Storybrooke again. As we hinted in the finale last year, in seeing the Evil Queen [Lana Parrilla] split, it’s allowing us to do that for a lot of our characters — not as literally — but it’s turning inward on a lot of these characters that we’ve been with for five seasons so far.”

So…im still confused? So we are going to:

    A) Get a full season arc that is separated in two, but the story just picks right back off when we return or..

    B) 22 Episodes, of a full story arc, that runs all the way through, no mid-season break.

I have no idea. I’d prefer A so we can still have the three month break.

I’m glad we’re getting that small town feel back. Storybrooke itself is as much a character as the likes of Snow and Emma.

Probably will be like S1 and S2, one story for all year, no more S6a and S6B, with lots of mini hiatus during the episodes.

Yes that is seriously joyous news. I’m just hoping (lolz) that the season lives up to that promise.

Looks like we’re going back to the format of Seasons 1 and 2, which at this point I’m pretty much all for. The split-Season format has been very hit or miss. Not to mention, the whole Untold Stories aspect has the potential to last an entire Season. Here are my guesses as to why they’ve decided to do this:

    1) First and foremost, Channing Dungey said that she wants to do away with the long winter hiatuses. Seems like she thinks having their main shows off the air for 3 months during the Winter does more harm than good. Especially when their attempts at bridge shows performed less than desired.
    2) Adam and Eddy realize that this very well may be their final Season, so the Season 1 and 2 format allows them to have more variety in terms of story ideas. The Untold Stories also open the door to introduce different literary characters in a way that would make sense.
    3) Adam and Eddy have actually listened to the criticisms of the split Seasons, and their response is to revisit the old format from Seasons 1 and 2.

I do still wish we had Agent Carter to split up AoS, though. Agents has actually benefitted from having split seasons. But that’s a discussion for WtL7.
