Legend of the Seeker star Craig Horner has landed a guest-starring role on Once Upon a Time — and EW can exclusively reveal that he will be playing the Count of Monte Cristo.
Horner will appear in at least one episode in season 6, though details on what he’ll be doing are being kept under wraps. The Count’s introduction comes in the wake of the show introducing the Land of Untold Stories, which opens up the storytelling possibilities to pretty much everyone.

Fairy tales in particular have one-dimensional characters, so reinterpreting these, fleshing them out, has a lot of creative potential. But ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ is a literary classic, with complex and well rounded characters. Reinterpreting these is far more difficult, and likely to come across as awkward AU fanfic unless the context is well chosen and it is skilfully done. I never enjoyed the Whale/Frankenstein backstories and I’m not yet sure about Jekyll and Hyde. All I can hope is that I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah I tend to agree, though I’ve been a big advocate of them doing other stories than Disney (bringing in other mythologies). Works like Count of Monte Cristo are vast in scope and really well developed. This is a case where it’s probably better to not “twist” the source material but let it stay true to the original. The fact that they are calling him the Count (and not Edmond) suggests that most of his story is actually complete (so why is he in the LUS?)

I’m conflicted on this. First off, I’ve never read the count of monte cristo so it doesn’t matter either way. However, it just feels like OUAT has lost its edge, and is now just copying characters rather than re-imagining them. On the other side, some characters are best left as is rather than trying to change for the sake of change.

Agree with you, they are simply now copying characters from book written by other people, instead of using the characters they have now and make them have one original story, that was what the show was good at the beginning, but now they dont know how to do it anymore, they dont know how to write original stories, bc simply pick some stories and gives them a twist at some point, is not originality, is simply copying the original and change it a bit and that doesnt make it original and their thing about giving a S1 vibe, is not just bring old and new characters and mix them together and there we have s1 again, that ship is long gone, and i fear even more for these huge classics that will be destroyed by them, i fear that they may also bring Jules verne, they may have more freedom with these stories but that doesnt mean is a good sign, look at the Robin hood and marian story.

Monte Cristo is like the Classic of Classics though…there’s no way they’d mess up one of Dumas’s greatest literary works! Right?
(Remembers that horrid OUAT Wizard of Oz Backstory)
That’s right…The “Good” Witch of the East….if they can screw up the Wizard of Oz, we must be cautious in trusting them with anything else.

Don’t forget Pride & Prejudice….I’m sure Adam and Eddy would love to explore Mr. Darcy.
