Move over, Frozen: Once Upon a Time has introduced yet another Disney property into the mix.

When the ABC fairy tale drama returned for its fourth season, Rumple (Robert Carlyle) and Belle (Emilie de Ravin) missed out on the chaos of Elsa’s arrival in Storybrooke proper because they decided to take a small honeymoon in a mansion that conveniently appeared in town after the last curse. The identity of the previous owner is unclear, but Rumple definitely recognized an artifact in the dwelling, which he conjured into a very familiar Disney icon.

“Yes, that’s the Sorcerer’s hat from Fantasia,” executive producer Edward Kitsis tells EW of the magical object, whose properties can be very deadly in the wrong hands. “We wanted to make the stars look real.”

The item’s appearance came after Rumple pledged atop the grave of his dead son, Neal (Michael Raymond-James), to become a better man. Thusly, he returned the dagger that controls him to his new wife Belle after deceiving her in the finale. “We’re going to learn a lot more [about the hat],” Kitsis says. “That’s going to be part of something that we tell for a while, but clearly he wanted it badly enough that he was willing to go back on his pledge, because he can resist everything but temptation.”

So, who does the hat belong to? Someone we’re going to meet, not someone we already know, according to Kitsis, who rules out returning villain Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten).

Calling it now: slow-burn narrative which concludes with Morgana (Black Fairy-ness optional) revealed as the previous owner of the hat (and house) in 4×22 to set up for 5A. Belle did say that you could see the ocean from nearly every room, and Morgana’s name in Welsh means something along the lines of born/dwells by the sea.

Also, I never saw it, but that live-action Sorcerer’s Apprentice film that Disney put out in 2010 apparently featured Nic Cage looking for the “Prime Merlinian”, a descendant of Merlin and the only one who can defeat the big boss battle with, that’s right, Morgana le Fay at the end of the film. It’s all probably nothing at all but Disney has at least once before linked Morgana with the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, so…

…Of course, odds are that this will simply join the long line of Anita, the Seer from 2×14, Tamara, and Zelena as roles I predicted Morgana for and came up blank. But if I guess long enough, I eventually need to be right, right? So on the very unlikely chance I’m right in May, you can say you heard it here first ;D

Keeper of Zelena's witch hat and the Black Fairy's wand.

    I like your “eventuality”!

Just no big mice, please! As much as I adore Fantasia, I would prefer they take a giant step back from more cutesy Disney icons and head into Arthur/Merlin/Morgana territory. Disney animators always had an edge to them and a wicked sense of humor when not totally under Walt’s  uber PG hammer. There is a medieval darkness that could blend beautifully with ONCE magic…to the tune of Night on Bald Mountain perhaps 😉
