New information about Rumplestiltskin will come to light during Sunday’s episode of Once Upon a Time that may change viewers’ opinion of the Dark One.
When Gideon (Giles Matthey) resumes his quest to kill Emma (Jennifer Morrison) in order to become the new Savior, Rumple is desperate to prevent his son from truly turning to the dark side. “People see the end of the midseason premiere and they question, ‘Does Rumple really want what’s best for Gideon? Wouldn’t his life be a lot easier to have a child who wants to be a gangster like him?’” executive producer Edward Kitsis tells EW. “Episode 13 is really going to show you what’s in Rumple’s heart, and what kind of father he is or wants to be.”
In fact, the hour also flashes back to Fairy Tale Land that was, where Rumple crosses paths with folk hero Beowulf (Torstein Bjørklund), providing some surprising new insight into Rumple’s relationship with Bae (Brandon Spink) — the first son the Dark One lost. “Episode 13 is actually going to reveal something about the relationship between Rumple and Baelfire in the very early days that we didn’t know about,” Kitsis teases.

Oh god what are they going to retcon now?

I know it should go without saying, but I hope it’s really good. I could see it being a lame attempt to make us sympathize with Rumple so that we see him as more honorable when he dies at the season’s end, conveniently forgetting his actions for the past few seasons.

I’m leaning toward the good based entirely on the scene last week between Rumple and papa charming where he says ‘may we all someday be re-united with our sons’. That scene makes me feel like they’re going for good 1st season Rumple where he’s a highly complex character with good traits, bad traits and a curse and not a bland black hat with no complexity (at least none that we really see onscreen).

Rumple understood what it was to long for his lost son. It reminded me of early seasons when this show really used to be about family and reconciliation. I loved the dynamic between Rumple and Baelfire, and I hope tomorrow’s episode does it justice.

Ironically, Hook fans hated his son all along.

Not possible when Milah met Hook for the first time when Baelfire was already like 7 years old, as shown in “Devil’s Due”. Rumple and MIlah’s marriage also didn’t get rocky until Rumple injured himself to get out of the war, when Baelfire had already been born. Not to mention, blood magic has been used between Rumple and Baelfire to further prove that they are father and son.

Milah could have been unfaithful to Rumple while he was away at the war, to a stranger in a mask calling himself Westley, later revealed to be Hook, who comes back for the woman he fell in love 5 years prior.
I would not underestimate the writers ability to retcon past events like Snowing’s first meeting or Cora being betrothed to Leopold.
