I never really liked the old costume, but the new one is definitely drawing too much inspiration from the disney/movie version.
Right. I don’t like the old one. it’s rather ugly. But at least it was ONCE’s.

But she did resemble the cartoon in a unique way. She still had the staff and horns (on her crown) and everything else was added creativity that made OUAT maleficent DISTINCT from the cartoon maleficent. Even Regina doesn’t completely resemble the Evil Queen from the cartoon in the beginning but her costumes (specifially her high collars) made the conection. All I’m saying is, Malefixent had a unique design, love it or hate it it was different from anything we had seen from the character. Now you can put OUAT Mal, Angelina Jolie Mal, Disney Cartoon Mal, and Kristin Chenoweth Mal all together and you got clones of one another. OUAT Mal doesn’t stand out anymore. Give her a costume change, but give it a spin. Ursula doesn’t look like a giant octo-lady. Cruella doesn’t look like a walking corpse (I’m sorry, Cruella looks like a zombie to me in the cartoon) so why does Mal have to be Jolie 2.0.

I just wish A&E could admit that they (not just Eduardo) decided to make their Mal visually resemble the popularized version of Mal, while ensuring her characterization would remain their own. I think A&E kind of got defensive when the interviewer suggested that Kristen’s Mal looked like Angelina’s Mal, and that they confused a critique about the costume for a critique about the character.

December 11, 2014 at 3:46 pm #292866FelieParticipantShe has consistently been voted one of the top Disney villains, and has even made it onto a few lists encompassing all villains. People love her.
So? People love her. So what? Is A and E’s job supposed to be bringing all the Disney people you love to life? I thought it was to create Once Upon a Time which took a unique spin and look on the those stories. And of course, they already had Mal…she was in season 1, in WL, and even in dragon form in S2. They are changing her NOW–after already establishing her in the show–to fit what is more profitable. We already know it’s Mal. People have been asking for more Mal long before S4; they do not need to change her to make her Maleficient. She already is Mal. Why change her now? Money.
They’re changing her now because they screwed up her character royally in season 1, and now they’re bringing her back, not in flashbacks, but as a villain. They need her to be a formidable villain, which her season 1 persona didn’t quite imbue. She is supposed to be the ‘mistress of all evil’ who has ‘all the powers of hell’, a power grade which was significantly down-graded in OUAT.
A frizzy-blonde haired, purple frills wearing lady, who we’ve already seen losing to Regina once (because of her love for a pet unicorn!!!), does not a formidable villainess make. Why are they changing her now? Because they need her to be a villain, not a brony.

Yes I do agree with your point: when they say something like they aren’t flipping through the Disney catelog and their new villains looks like very literal copies of the Disney films…well. It’s hard not to roll your eyes. Own up to the fact that you are paid by the Great Mouse, boys. We all know it. We all know that Disney has their hand in your honey pot.

Royally screwed up says you, new and interesting interpretation (which was the point of the show) says I. She was formidable. The woman could turn into a dragon and created that booming voice in WL. And…do you not get that the reason why she lost to Regina over her love for a pet unicorn was because Charming put TL-egg inside her? That changed her. And, of course the powers were less than Regina…Regina was the main character who needed to cast the curse. You cant’ have Regina loosing when 10 mins after the fact she needs to be casting the curse that was the whole premise of the show.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"December 11, 2014 at 4:00 pm #292869PriceofMagicParticipantAn in-show explanation for the costume choice of Maleficent in season 1 could be that we saw her in her downtime. Both times she was at her castle. The black costume could be her business gear. Much like how Rumple had his rocker suit for making deals (as seen in Price of Gold and The Shepherd) but in his downtime at the dark castle (such as Skin Deep) he’s often wearing silk shirts and waistcoats/vests.
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixDecember 11, 2014 at 4:04 pm #292871TheWatcherParticipantOkay, I think we all have differing opinions about the costume of Maleficent. Lets move on. Lets talk about CRUELLA DE VILLE! *thunder cracks*
Her costume is pretty straight froward ut how do you guys feels about it? I like it. She’s no Glenn Close but still 😛 I really hope Eduardo doesnt cut corners when it comes to her wardrobe. She needs to be the Queen Of Fashion on this show. Also, what is she holding in her hand in one of the pictures? I saw it in the promo but can’t make out what it is

Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. She wasn’t interesting to me, she was disappointing. They made her sentimental, which destroyed everything that made her a great character in the original: cold, calculating, ruthless, Regal, distant, intelligent, and powerful.
She was formidable.Again, we’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one.
The woman could turn into a dragon and created that booming voice in WL.
And yet, was repeatedly beaten in battle (by Regina and Emma), tricked (by Charming), used (by Rumple), and stolen from (by the merry men).
And…do you not get that the reason why she lost to Regina over her love for a pet unicorn was because Charming put TL-egg inside her?
The fact that he managed to trick her into consuming it, and she never did anything to rectify the situation, is one of the problems I have with her.
That changed her. And, of course the powers were less than Regina…Regina was the main character who needed to cast the curse. You cant’ have Regina loosing when 10 mins after the fact she needs to be casting the curse that was the whole premise of the show.
No, but Maleficent didn’t need to go down so easily, and in a way that made her seem sentimental and just a bit pathetic.

I’m fine with the way Cruella looks. I really don’t have a problem with her resembling the Disney live-action version of her. However, I think I would have a problem with Cruella being a shape-shifting dalmatian sorceress. There’s “taking liberties” and then there’s what I would call an overly active imagination. I suppose Cruella could be like Ruby, who is actually a werewolf, but that just seems like a bridge too far as far as I’m concerned.
