Brave’s redheaded and defiant princess is coming to Once Upon a Time — and EW has the scoop on how and when the ABC fairy-tale drama will be meeting her.
Introduced in the season premiere, Merida (Amy Manson) is “a spitfire like [she was in] the movie,” says executive producer Edward Kitsis. “If she’s not your favorite new character this year, I won’t know what to say. She’s a lot of fun.”
“This is the first Pixar character on the show,” executive producer Adam Horowitz adds. “It’s a character Eddy and I have loved since the movie came out. We’re very excited to include her in the show.”

I’ve not actually seen the movie Brave so I’m wondering if the writers are actually going to flesh the character out enough so that you get the gist of what happened in the movie without needing to see it or whether they’re going to rely too heavily on the assumption that people have seen the movie and know what’s going on and Merida is going to come across half-baked.

Keeper of FelixLooks like they’re giving Merida the Frozen treatment. They aren’t doing an alternate re-telling the movie, but are instead having her story on OUAT take place after the movie. The twist will be to see how Merida fits in with the OUAT universe. Except this time around, it seems like Merida will only be playing a supporting role, rather than having her story be the backbone of the entire half-Season. The focus will still be on Camelot and Dark Swan, not “BRAVE ALL THE THINGS”, as RG would describe it.

Personally I think there might be some backstory between Mr. Gold and Merida, if she is shooting arrows at his shop.
There can be backstory between Merida and the cast, just like there can be present day story between Merida and the cast. I just don’t want Brave/Merida to take over the entire show like Frozen did.

Adam and Eddy admitted that the casting call for Rumple’s mother was a lie to hide Merida, but that doesn’t mean there can’t still be a connection between Rumple and Merida. They are both “Scottish”, after all.

I know that I am just saying it weird that she is shooting arrows at the pawn shop. Speaking of which I am still very disappointed that they lied to us. :C
