[adrotate group="5"]October 27, 2014 at 2:27 am #287635MyrilParticipantThis was an episode reminding of what could have been while at the same time painfully manifesting, it’s not there. The show runners have good intentions, but they have no idea what they’re doing. Adventure, crazy geek twists is their thing but not human nature and psychology. There might be writers in the team with more sense for the latter, but the basic setup works against it. Nothing new, but it made this episode agonizing to watch. A C- at best.
I know, you were talking about getting back a more positive feeling again in the fandom, but sorry, can’t with this episode.
strongly disliked:
everything Emma – Regina. Sorry, no, no and no. It’s like Emma want’s to befriend her bully – for all the wrong reasons, for trying to get some cuddle time with a selfish ice-block, or to use a fire image, a pot of red-hot lava. I get, what they think they are telling, but that is not the story they are telling. I would be the first to cheer for friendship, women empowering each other, but not with the Regina they made the most woefull, biggest victim of victims turned evil ever. And while at least Regina was very much in her self pity wallowing, grumpy self, with the emotional “maturity” of maybe a 5-year old, Emma was butchered as character. I truly want Emma to have a friend, she needs that more than any lover, but Regina as she is is not it. There was no parallel to the flashback with Lily, aside Emma being betrayed (right, Emma being betrayed, not Regina) and lied to. I understand Lily’s motivation even, though they didn’t give us really any background, but I have an idea what it feels like to feel invisible and in the total wrong place, family, which all doesn’t change that Lily betrayed Emma, lied to her, manipulated her, exploited her vulnarability and wish for friendship, but it was such a different story and relationship than the one Emma and Regina have. Emma more or less begging for Regina’s friendship? Well, only because she has indeed hardly anyone else to turn to, aside Elsa, who we know though will very probably not stay around. So Emma wants to be friends with Regina not because a friendship with Regina would be so great but in lack of other options to find someone, who at least has something to with magic and messed up family. This is not about hope but desperation.
Swanqueen as friendship ship – really?! Saw hilarious or obnocious tweet from the official show account. Seriously, don’t think you need to be gay to get possible subtext reading when it’s served on a plate like this, but it only comes as appetizer, it will never be the real deal. And Swanqueen fans actually embrace this queerbaiting fest they made this episode? Pathetic. But go on, don’t give up hope, because this show is so about hope. (And maybe some are old enough to remember who was called Hope in Xena? Yup, right, the one who nearly destroyed Xena’s and Gabrielle’s relation, daughter of Gabrielle and evil Dahak, mother of The Destroyer. Then maybe you get my pun).
least fave:
Got it, you haven’t forgotten Neal. And while I never warmed up with that character, I would understand if Neal fans would find such fanservice, as it is, ambiguous at best.Seeing Belle babysitting Snowflake prince, I for a moment felt again the sadness, that Red went missing. But then, when we were back to Emma and Regina, the sadness turned into the happy thought, that Red’s absence means, for the time being they can’t butcher her character as well. So my new big first on my wishlist (aside that I loved Meghan Rory as Red): Please, stay away from Red. And while were at it: Please stay away from Mulan as well. My fanon no is those two in the woods, discovering a deep connection with each other, while there on some secret mission Tinkerbell sent them on. Thanks for creating these characters, but leave them alone. Hope the OUaT writers stay away from my fanon.
The ice bridge – and I am not complaining about CGI here. I liked the movie Frozen to some degree, but this blatant copy of movie moments is getting boring and worth. It’s all about playing around with the shiny new stuff, nothing but trivial, unimaginative fan fiction. Georgina Haig still makes the best of what they give her though.
meh:
Sidney set free – I knew he would betray Regina the moment she put him back into the mirror, it was just obvious, and made sense, and could be even a good story. I liked that the Snow Queen got him to do something for her, and then sets Sidney free, into a freedom Sidney has no idea how to live it. He never had, he is used to be used, as jinny, as mirror, doubt he will know now how to handle it. And remember (though we are probably meant to have forgotten), the last person, who set him free, Snow’s father Leopold, Sidney murdered, ensnared by Regina to do it. Doesn’t Look good for the Snow Queen, does it. The good news maybe for the Snow Queen, but the reason why I put this under meh: The writers are not really good in following up such interesting stories.fave:
Snow Queen. The moment she had with Elsa. But even more the scene when she was alone in her lair. The understated, cold, ambiguous Snow Queen manages to make me feel for her even for a second with just one sentence and look (scene “family that loves me”). Go figure. It’s mind-boggling that the writers, who made such a mess of Regina and a close to unbearable nuisance of Zelena (The Wicked Witch), are still able to create a character like the Snow Queen. Although at least half of it is Mitchell’s acting. And I am intrigued with what the mirror, mirror pieces could mean to her. It’s is the kind of multilayered possible meanings I like (reflection, self and others, identity building, mirror into past/ future, doorway), though with these writers I doubt they have an understanding of it going beyond playing around with shiny stuff.honorable mention
Are we getting somewhat of Bandit-Snow back? See what wonders it can do for Snow if her story his not about / involving Regina.I am sure, well I have already seen plenty of people liking this episode, Regina fans should be all cheering, but YMMV. No thanks from me for finally giving more of Emma background but doing it in such a messed up way. Way to go show, to make an episode with Emma flashbacks still pretty much an episode mostly about Regina.

Wondering about that too.

October 27, 2014 at 2:45 am #287637WickedRegalParticipantHold up! Are people seriously complaining about Regina being upset with Emma nearly ruining her life?
Ok….Regina has every right to feel the way she feels right now! Let’s take it back to high school shall we darlings? You’re in love with an insanely charming, follow the rules, all around amazing guy! Then the girl whose supposed to be your good friend goes back and accidently reunites him with his ex. Wouldn’t you be pi**ed off a little too! So yes…Regina has every right to be angry with Emma, but it’s only for a temporary time.
THIS was the episode for Regina to vent, scream, curse Emma to the top of her lungs, just to get all the building anger and frustration out of her system! At the end of this episode, we were shown that Regina slowly took a step forward in moving past Emma’s accidental betrayal! Yes! A life was saved, but at the cost of someone’s long overdue happiness, and almost some much needed trust between these two women. Emma didn’t even verbally apologize for her accidental betrayal, but the mere fact she’s willing to stand by, and do whatever it took to show Regina how sorry she was, was a lot more than what Evil Regals saw Snow White even do….well Pre 3×18 Bleeding Through Snow White.
And for those saying there was no parallel between Regina and Lily…Yes there was! Lily blatantly lied to Emma, and gave her hope of them being together forever. Regina on the other hand was straightforward with Emma, and although she withheld the truth about Sidney, she never lied and gave Emma any false hope. Lily was a little fake, Regina was straight up honest, in a brutal way, but honest nonetheless.
And just another friendly reminder:
Lana Parrilla’s Interview About 4×05 Breaking Glass and Emma:
“It takes a bit, because she feels betrayed,” Parrilla told us. “She’s hurt by Emma, deeply. She doesn’t know if it [saving Marian] was intentional. I think deep down inside of her, she hopes it was a mistake or an accident, but it’s going to take her a little bit to come around, and to open her heart again. Because I do believe she cares for Emma on some level. It’s almost like a sisterly bond they have. And that mirrors the Elsa and Anna bond — you see in that first episode, that famous behind the door scene, and that mirrors the Frozen scene. To me, they are setting up that kind of relationship between the two. I love what happens to them. There’s an episode coming up where I remember reading the script going, ‘Oh my God, Regina’s so awful to Emma! She’s saying one horrible thing after another.’ Playing it is one thing, because you feel like a total bi**h for eight days while you’re filming the episode, but in reality it’s only 45 minutes. And it’s one day, where she’s just really upset and wants to punish her. And I think she just needs to get it off her chest and they’ll move forward. I’m excited about their relationship because they’re very similar. They have something they were born with, which is this magic. Emma and Regina don’t have a lot of people they can relate to. So it’s nice they find comfort in one another,” Lana said of what would cement an Emma-Regina team-up.
So please everyone…Cut Regina some slack for once. This was her episode to vent, and now that she has…her and Emma can just move forward now.

Speaking as a Neal fan, I wish I knew what they were trying to get at, so ambiguous fanservice probably sums it up pretty well. Watching this ep through Neal fan goggles, I saw shoutouts to him all over the place, not just the photo at the end, (they may have cast someone who almost looked like a young Regina, but things like helping Emma steal food, setting up in a house by the water, talking about making a home together, even the relationship ending with Emma feeling betrayed and lied to, all that stuff was like Neal related Tallahassee callbacks to me, not to mention they said the Snowflake’s name so many times in this ep I lost count). Emma’s reaction to seeing the photo was perfect, that’s a suitable reaction to seeing a photo of the guy you loved who died in your arms only a couple of weeks ago, and JMo nailed it. But two seconds later the moment had passed and it feels like we’re already back to, “Neal who?” so it does kinda feel like they were just throwing the Neal fans a bone. But they’ve gotta move the plot forward, no time to linger on realistic exploration of emotions like grief.
I think that final scene should have been between Emma and her parents, who would be more fitting people to share her childhood memories with. And it just seemed random that a box of her few, precious, treasured momentos was being stored at her office, as opposed to the place she was living. So having it happen at CasaCharmings would have made more sense, and had more of an emotional impact IMO.
In other news, I’m still enjoying Will, but am still a bit on edge about what exactly they’re gonna be doing with his (and Ana’s) story.
Best thing about this ep was probably the Snow Queen’s lair. It’s a decadent and awesome set, and Mitchell portrays her as really being a part of that environment. She moves and speaks with such confidence and that makes her feel like a formidable threat.

I agree with Phee. There was a lot of Tallahassee/Neal stuff going on and while the photo moment at the end was genuine and powerful and kinda ripped me up, it was also clearly bait to keep watching and silence all the criticisms people had after he died and the lack of emotional follow through. I was saying this last night in SF…but I’m not sure how I feel about the whole moment because I do recognize that I’m being used. (by “I” I mean the general Neal fan population)

EM is fantastic. The lair was good though a bit too “Jadis, Queen of Narnia” for me.

Sidney standing up to Regina- Finally!
Will- I like seeing Will but wish they’d actually give him something to do.
The SwanFire photo- It was a nice acknowledement of Neal and I actually wonder if they are planning something since we seem to be getting a lot of Neal references.
Charming- Aside for that idiotic comment in 401, Charming is one of my favourite regulars after Rumple and Belle. I like how he is the more rational one in the Snowing relationship.
Mixed:
Regina- The only reason she’s not in the dislikes is because I understand she’s upset hence why she doesn’t want to be BFFs with Emma. However, therein lies the problem. Marian wasn’t just wondering the forest when Emma brought her back, REGINA was going to kill her. Regina is defining her happiness solely as being with Robin and that is a really unhealthy way to look at it. She sees Marian as an inconvenience not as a person. Regina seems to think bringing back Marian will prove her love to Robin and it’s just wrong. Also Regina was quite bullying towards Sidney and not even in a fun EQ way. Why can’t we get a scene of Regina saying to Emma something like “Why didn’t you release her in the forest instead of bringing her back here?” then Emma explaining that she couldn’t then Regina realising that Emma was right even though she’s not happy about it rather than being all whiny with “Emma! You took away my happy ending by bringing back the woman I was going to murder! wah wah wah!” Regina needs to stop whining, move on, and show that she’s still the strong independent person she was in 3A before she ever met Robin.
Hook being the one to rifle through Emma’s childhood memories box- He did ask Emma’s permission and she gave it but it felt like that should’ve been an alone moment for Emma where she’s going through her past, not having someone do it for her. Good job that kid took Emma’s camera otherwise Emma would still have no clue who the snow queen was.
Least Favourite:
No Rumple or Belle- Belle was in for about 2 seconds but she’s not really been used so far this season. Hopefully next week’s episode changes that.
Photos- The photos we saw being screenshots from earlier episodes rather than actual proper photos.
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixOctober 27, 2014 at 8:46 pm #287794CindersParticipantMy favorite line of this episode was spoken by Regina. Emma tells Regina that she’s not giving up on their friendship, even if Regina sill wants to kill her. Regina says “Wait, Emma. I don’t want to kill you”
I don’t care who was right, or wrong in that convo, I’m glad they’re mending fences….whatever.
But the way Regina read that line. Her facial expression. Well, it just cracks me up every time I watch it. Lana is the best!

EMILY DE RAVEN has been on other projects this summer and was not available for a lot of filming. I think they gave her brief scenes with limited dialogue because they were working around her schedule… They did not want to loose her. They had to feature the happy honeymooners.

The only project listed on Emilie’s imdb and wiki pages is the indie movie The Submarine Kid, and according to Twitter, filming for that wrapped on May 9th, which was two months before filming for OUAT resumed.
