March 29, 2015 at 9:22 pm #300163KebParticipantThis episode really sparkled with magic in places, though there were a few notes that bothered me.
Liked:
–The scene with the key reveal was as magical in context as it was as a sneak peek.
–The author being the peddler was SO classic fairy tale
–I love that Ella sent them the glass unicorn mobile.
–The namedrop of Walt. Author or not, that made me smile.
–Emma magicking a new page.
–Killian demonstrating some maturity about Emma having a guy friend.
–Mal altering deals with Rumple. And I was very moved by her loss.
–Getting Jennifer’s and Abby’s looks perfectly aligned for this ep–Abby’s a good young Emma anyway, but there was NO question they were the same person here. It was beautiful.
—More Oz is coming!!!!!
–Rumple carefully moving Belle to the bed and promising to come back for her if he can…things about that scene I didn’t like, but I was still going awwww at his making her comfortable being a priority. And just…the way he looks at her still moves me EVERY time. I will never stop shipping it.Disliked:
–Not letting Henry be there when the author was freed. Geez.
–We now have MULTIPLE episodes where Belle’s only appearance is not only silent, but unconscious. Way to treat your “regulars,” A&E. (I am still grateful she was in the episode at all, but come on.)
–Mal can knock out all of Storybrooke save the people who’ve been under the Sleeping Curse before…but when Snow and Charming steal her BABY, she can’t even knock out Charming? (He hadn’t been under yet at this point!)
–They did mention Cora’s death but the math for this was so similar to the candle’s magic–an even trade, I get mine in exchange for someone else’s.
–Come on, retconning Snow’s pure heart? Annoyed. I kinda like the vow to be heroes thenceforth, but seriously, that pure heart nonsense is getting so inconsistent that I just can’t with it anymore. In a show where you literally can SEE a person’s heart blackened…it ought to make SOME sense. Especially as they keep using it as a major plot point (oh, we can see Glinda, but Regina can’t–just, how?).
–Okay, the Apprentice and Blue BOTH seem to have a penchant for sending villains to our world on the theory they’ll then be harmless. But…uh…just…um….this is all kinda their fault, author or no author. And while they explained DQ’s lack of aging a bit by giving her only 19 years without magic, wth with Ursula & Cruella? They now have to account for 30 years of aging for those two (and it’s CANONICAL they entered our world 30 years ago, no guesswork there–Gold said it).
–August and Emma talking and still not addressing all those issues left unaddressed from the past. I know they’re not relevant to the current plot but *sigh*.Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. – Mal!!! MAL!!!!! Kristin Bauer…moved me to tears actually with that pleading scene…and she said it best “what kind of people are you???” The way she begged, mother to mother, pleaded, Maleficent, the Mistress of All Evil…..BEGGED & PLEADED WITH SNOW WHITE TO SPARE HER CHILD!!!!!! My heart hadn’t been torn like that since the Season 4 Premiere when Regina was crying to herself in her office! All the applause goes out to Kristin Bauer for her scenes in this episode!
– Henry’s name is Henry Daniel Mills, someone catch me as I fall out from StableQueen & RegalBeliever feels….and I love that Henry just knows when not to argue with his mother, Lana and Jared just have such a special chemistry….sometimes I forget they’re not real mother and son.
Mixed
– Just about everything else…
Disliked
– Snowing…Snowing…Snowing….For 4 Seasons…I’ve been saying they were secretly the most shadiest, selfish, and self absorbed characters on the show(besides Blue Fairy) and now it’s finally coming to light! Everyone can see them for the what they really are…selfish scumbags whose content long as they’re happy, and to heck with everyone else.

March 29, 2015 at 9:59 pm #300170RumplesGirlKeymasterLike I said in podcast, I am very conflicted. I thought there was a lot of “down time” and some silly things (like Snow whispering to David and Emma standing RIGHT THERE but not hearing?)
I guess I’ll just tackle some things
LIKED
–Henry with the book. That felt very S1
–Cruella, Cruella, Cruella.
–Mal begging to have mercy. That was rather sweet
–Snow’s forest outfit
–Emma’s new red coat
—Getting some answers–even if I’m not sure how I feel about them
–Pretty much being right that they would make Walt the author
–Pretty much being right that Rumple is going to die.
MIXED
–You can cast a giant sleeping curse over an entire town?
–Photographs show magic with glares?
–Look! Belle! Oh, she’s unconscious. Shock
–Bobby’s acting will always make me yearn for the Rumple I loved.
–Emma’s reaction…both human and pretty cold given that she tells Hook that it doesn’t matter what he did in the past since that’s not how he is now.
DISLIKED
–August and Emma NOT talking about the stuff that really matters!!
–An entire conversation about a lost child and NO Bae mention. Keep trying, writers. I’m not going to forget him, no matter how hard you want me to.
–Rumple being okay with going after Henry
–Rumple’s speech to Belle. I may not recognize the man on my screen anymore, but he was once my favorite character and it hurts to “know” that he’s going to die and that this time around, I don’t care.
–Hook’s random jealousy. Emma can have a friend!
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 29, 2015 at 10:33 pm #300184MatthewPaulModeratorThis episode leaves me very split. I didn’t hate it, but I still had plenty of issues.
Liked
– Finally getting to meet the Author. I like that being the Author is an occupation passed down from person to person, and I kinda like the current Author being mischievous. I actually predicted the Author abusing his powers, and being imprisoned in the book as punishment. Also, I rather enjoy Patrick Fischler’s performance so far.
– Henry getting to do stuff!
– I enjoyed August’s scenes, and I’m glad he’s still around past this episode.Disliked
– Snowing’s shadiness. What they did to Maleficent’s child felt pretty out of character, and I didn’t like their behavior in present day SB either. At least they admitted their mistakes in both the flashback and present day. They even finally confessed to Emma, but too little too late.
– Cruella and Ursula’s involvement in the flashback. They were reduced to bumbling sidekicks, and how they ended up in our world felt rushed. And how did they not age for 30 years?
– Dragon Mal CGI still looks meh.March 30, 2015 at 4:09 am #300209GaultheriaParticipant–Emma’s new red coat
So much like her mother’s.
–You can cast a giant sleeping curse over an entire town?
All those people who died in traffic, in the hospital, in kitchen fires, in the bathtub,…
–Photographs show magic with glares?
That’s sort of consistent with claims about Kirlian photography. I’d like it if that was the producers’ quiet intention, since the show tends toward too much exposition.
–Hook’s random jealousy. Emma can have a friend!
Hook has always had an inferiority complex because of his cool older brother. Killian had to bottle his feelings of resentment, too, because Liam was a decent guy. August has the kind of natural swagger that makes perpetually-nervous Killian revert to his “I am not worthy” mindset.

March 30, 2015 at 4:22 am #300211schaendlichParticipantI knew something was up with Rumpel’s heart. I guessed that it’d turned from dark, to practically stone-like a while back when he started being a douche. Hopefully that’s where they’re taking this, so that we can save a bit of his character. That way, he won’t die so terribly inconsistent. They’ll also have another chance to amend some bad writing by mentioning Bae’s death/Zelena’s year long mind rape being the reason for his. (Bae was his happy ending, for Pete’s sake.). Fingers crossed.
Favorite:
-Regina! Right on, girl. I’ve been loving you since you started making the right decisions even when it’s tough. She’s lovely.
-Ursula existed. (My PoC meter must be filled in whatever way it can be with this show…)
-Hey, you guys remember when Henry, like, did things and meant stuff? Good times. Dude, it was total nostalgia this episode.
Least Favorite:
-(going to be a little long) Snow and Charming were just awful people, but not in a thought provoking way. All of the things that we comment on in the forums that OUAT unknowingly made the values of these characters (e.g. forget everyone, but people we care about), they made happen purposefully this time, but only acknowledged it in the situation having to do with plot. I’m fine with them being jerks, but they just keep dancing around the fact that Charming is about to burn a man alive. Snow is all “Regina won’t get her happy ending!” Excuse me? Charming is going to BURN A MAN ALIVE.
Also, did they ever even mention that Emma will never be who she could have been because of this? That she has no real possibility in life? That everything Emma is really doesn’t unfold, so much as it is orchestrated by their selfish desires? No matter what, she will never have a true up and down, because all paths must now lead to “good”. They robbed her of developing into whoever her life would have her become, for better or worse. They robbed her of all of the value of her adventure and all of the effort she puts in to do right, because it’s not her choice. It’s theirs. They have no child. Just a puppet. And that didn’t cross their minds at all? C’mon. If you’re going to have big topics about God and fate, explore big questions.
-Magical camera glare… Hmm, it must be impossible to capture camera or video of nearly half of everything in town. Oh, wait. There once was a guy named Greg…
-Mr. Carlyle’s been a bit stiff. It makes me sad, but it’s almost like he’s bored of it all, now. I miss season one, Rumpel. The one that was a smooth criminal as Gold, and who jumped all over the place and actually used the high pitched voice when he was the Dark One? Memories…
Mixed:
-Rumpel’s sudden goodness (almost?). Stop confusing me, Once. Man…smooth transitions, please.
-Many Authors? Interesting. I want to see where they go with this, before I get excited. The author being that peddler was kinda cool, though.
-Something was weird about the Maleficent baby taking scene. I can’t put my finger on it (maybe it’s that Maleficent knows tons of magic, and could probably have force-choked Snow into next Tuesday, and picked her baby from Snow’s cold, dead fingers without a hitch. But, then again, who knows?)
March 30, 2015 at 4:43 am #300212PheeParticipantThis ep was mostly “meh” and “urgh srsly” to me.
The only scene that really held my attention was the scene where August was telling them about the Authors. But there was even some “urgh” in that scene because I know we’ll never get an explanation as to how he found out all those things.
Also, agreed with those who wish they’d use him to his full potential in regards to Emma. I like that she insisted he was her friend, and I love the moments where August is happy to see how far she’s come. It just leaves me wanting more because there are things in their past that should really be hashed out, and the way the actors play off each other, it could make for some good television to see that all dealt with. But it’s just another example of how this show doesn’t think things like that are important, which contributes to how shallow and PLOT driven the show feels as a whole these days.
Highlight of the ep for me, because it totally made me chuckle: “The job has gone back eons,” said by a guy named Eion. 😛
March 30, 2015 at 8:57 am #300228onceaholicParticipantWait a minute, wait a minute….
Last episode Ursula said she was banished to our world. This episode we saw her fall down the portal to our world. It seemed like an accident. So really, was she banished?
The current author is called Walt. Ugh. UGH!!!!
Other than that, I liked everything else. 8/10. Points docked for the other two.
Keeper of Regina's bravery
