I think Moe did lie about how Belle’s mom died but only in the save the graphic details way. In all likelihood, Belle’s mom was probably ripped apart. Remember one of the soldiers in the first ogre war said something along the lines of “When the ogres rip you limb from limb, pray that death is quick”. The ogres aren’t going to be considerate just because they’re dealing with a woman. Also it’s possible that Belle did actually see what happened to her mother but that it was so traumatic, her mind actually blanked it out to cope.
I quite enjoyed this episode overall. There’s nothing major I can say I disliked about it.
Some highlights:
The Oaken scene- The guy playing Oaken was perfect and I just liked Belle’s “you said they were nice”.
Rumple rescuing Belle and mirror Belle- I think the mirror just takes the little doubts and guilt and really brings them out, it brings out the worst in people. I liked Rumple doing what he could to protect Belle even as he tried to keep his secrets. I like how, even though Rumple is lying to Belle, you can just tell by the look on his face that he feels bad about doing it. Hats off to RC and EdR for their acting this episode. It’s a shame they don’t give Belle more to do.
Regina- I’ve been quite critical of Regina lately but it was nice to see this episode that she did back off from Robin and told him so and basically told Robin to back off too.
Hook saying he was closer to two hundred- Proof that the 300 age range given to Rumple was to high!
Two minor dislikes:
Belle blaming herself for Anna’s disappearance- Timeline wise you are looking at about 2-3 years before the curse was cast. Ingrid taking Anna then doesn’t mean Elsa never saw her again from then up to present day and why didn’t Belle just say that last time she saw Anna the Snow Queen had her?
Robin- Robin needs to stop with the whole OQ business. His attitude towards Regina this episode seems to be “Regina! Regina! Why are you ignoring me Regina? Regina! Regina! I love you Regina! I love you so much that I know you’ll bring Marian back!” What exactly is Robin expecting? He’s stringing Regina along. He loves Regina but he wants Marian back. He needs to make a choice and stick to it.

Keeper of FelixNovember 3, 2014 at 8:24 am #288706RumplesGirlKeymasterThe need to shake Rumple until he Does The Right Thing (TM) actually diminished for me this episode–precisely because Bobby played Rumple’s anguish at violating her trust so perfectly in the scene where Belle breaks down. This is why I keep forgiving that silly imp for things like torture and murder–because he just has so much heart and soul.
Anguish from Bobby or not, he’s still lying and Belle is still placing all the blame on herself. “I don’t even know if I deserve to be with you anymore.” That almost did me in, as much as I liked the episode. He needs hit upside the head and made to tell the truth because Belle thinking that she is so unworthy of his love because she didn’t tell the truth about Anna, but him not telling the truth about everything he’s done…not okay.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 3, 2014 at 9:22 am #288713Sci-Fi GirlParticipantI loved the Regina told Robin to forget her and find a way to love his wife again. That, people, is character development, and that’s also her actually acting from love instead of selfishness.
A selfless act of love? As in, the only thing that can thaw a freezing spell?
Could Regina’s sacrifice become strong enough to be the act of love that thaws Marion?
The names. The timeline clues. THE BOOK. (The same one she’s clutching in Skin Deep.)
I haven’t memorized every clue. 😉 Do we know what book it was? As in, the title?

According to Jane’s original script the title of the book in Skin Deep is “Her Handsome Hero”

I mean, she cut him physically with the knife and that’s nothing (although I’m interested that he doesn’t heal it right away–maybe he’s wearing the wound as a form of penance as he did the lame leg in S2 when he could have healed it?) but then she cuts him with her complete faith that he’d never keep secrets from her (and yeah, she seems naive given their history on that count, but she’s just discovered she’s -capable- of hurting him and betraying his trust, been through a reminder of two times when she was semi-responsible for someone else getting hurt/killed, and experienced an intense magical simulation of the darkest kind of depression, so she’s not exactly thinking clearly here–and certainly pedestalling him, the man who just saved her AND forgave her AND whom she believes is 100% hero since his death to save the town) and you can see how he’s just crumbling inside because he knows how wrong she is and it’s killing him.
All the awards to both of them.
I agree! RC and EdR acted their socks off this episode which is why I don’t know why the writers don’t give them more scenes together. You could really feel for Rumple this episode, his lies are coming back to bite him and there’s nothing he can do about it but keep digging. Interestingly, Belle’s actions this episode have kind of reinforced Rumple’s belief that he needs to keep the hat and dagger secret from Belle. Had Belle had the real dagger, he couldn’t of saved her and the hat is a dangerous thing if it falls into the wrong hands.
There must be a reason why Rumple didn’t just try and put Ingrid in the hat then and there. What does she have that he wants?

We could probably start an entirely separate thread for this. The Cold War stand-off between Ingrid and Rumple is one of the more intriguing things to come from this season. Maybe it has something to do with the Emma-Helga doppelgänger prophesy. I think Rumple knows all about it and that he desires Ingrid to carry out her plan because that is what is going to charge Emma’s magic, which Rumple covets. Rumple needs to capture True Love, the greatest magic of all, inside of the sorcerer’s hat. He said if you can bottle true love, you can do anything, and by capturing Emma inside that hat, he’d finally have enough power to free himself of the control of the dagger once and for all. Just because Emma is family it doesn’t mean Rumple wouldn’t be tempted to capture her magic for himself. Everything he is doing this season is done out of his own self-interest. It’s his nasty habit.

November 3, 2014 at 1:51 pm #288773WickedRegalParticipantThis was truly Emilie De Ravin’s best episode to date on Once! The Mirror Scene….Brilliant…See! I’m telling you, we get darker Belle, we’ll get better Belle! I think that was Lacey in the mirror….#IMissRaceyLacy!
Though I was very disappointed in Belle this episode…from being naïve to plain selfish! I know, I know….I’m being harsh! But it was just OOC for Belle to choose a stone over saving a woman’s life. I mean…I always guessed Belle would get her due on the Naughty List, but to see Anna fall from that cliff and nearly die….my like for Belle degraded to a new low.
But then came sympathy because her husband is of course lying….so it boosted her a little on my list! But Belle, sweetie, wake up and smell the brewing coffee! You’re smarter than this, stop being so naive! You wanna think your husband is just the wonderful changed man, but apparently you already know the truth of the “beast” you’re dealing with…
Dear Rumple!

– Belle getting to actually do stuff! This was a genuine centric for Belle, and Rumple was only in a portion of it, so it didn’t over rely on him.
– Belle’s confrontation with the mirror.
– Elizabeth Mitchell is still killing it as the Snow Queen.
– Regina telling Robin Hood that he should focus on loving Marian again if he truly wants to save her. Definite character development on her part by putting Robin’s own needs over her own.
– Seeing Pabbie again. I’m a sucker for John Rhys-Davies, and I was impressed that his CGI still looked pretty good.
– Regina’s “Captain Guyliner” comment.
– Hook’s exchange about everyone in this town being related.Disliked
– Belle struggling to decide to help Anna. Seemed off for her character.
– Belle continuing to buy Rumple’s deceit. This is going to make things even worse when the truth about Rumple does come into the light.
– The lack of Will Scarlet.November 3, 2014 at 5:05 pm #288803KebParticipantBelle’s moment of selfishness parallels Rumple’s choosing power over love multiple times, for the most immediate and relevant bit. But it’s also understandable–she had to sail two weeks to get what she thought was the only way to put her mind to rest, and she almost had it when she realized she needed to save Anna, too. It was a very human failing.
Her pedestalization of Rumple is equally human; she needs to believe that he’s changed, and he has some. She’s got good evidence, both real and fake, that he’s not the monster he once was. He DID choose Bae over the dagger–she was there for that–and he DID choose to sacrifice his own life to save everyone from his father. Those are real things she has in her pocket.
And yes, she’s got doubts about the dagger and his commitment to flying straight; remember how she glanced questioningly at him just before he changed the security tape showing Zelena’s death? But he keeps playing to prove she’s got the real dagger (because it’s benefiting him, and because he’s scared to admit the truth to her), so she doesn’t have sufficient evidence to support any suspicions she has. And she wants to believe he trusts her that much. That was the first argument she held up against the mirror–his faith in her. She needs that support, as strong willed as she can be at times. Because if he doesn’t trust her, if he hasn’t changed, then that says a lot about her, too–at least in her mind. Besides, she knows he relies on her faith in him for his strength to be a better man (he’s told her so); how could she let him down?
Belle’s lying felt a little OOC but guilt will do that. And using the dagger? Power is tempting, corrupting, and that dagger has shown just how corrupting it can be. It persuaded Rumple to kill Zoso and become the monster we know and love. It was only a matter of time before Belle was compelled–by simple human nature–to use it for something.
And I did say it only decreased my need to shake Rumple. He still needs to get his act together. I was just moved so much by this episode, though…I think the last one that got this deep into my head was the Outsider or maybe Quiet Minds (but for far less noble reasons in the latter case). I’m a little biased now due to Feels but I think this is my favorite ep after Skin Deep.
