Belle’s moment of selfishness parallels Rumple’s choosing power over love multiple times, for the most immediate and relevant bit. But it’s also understandable–she had to sail two weeks to get what she thought was the only way to put her mind to rest, and she almost had it when she realized she needed to save Anna, too. It was a very human failing.
Her pedestalization of Rumple is equally human; she needs to believe that he’s changed, and he has some. She’s got good evidence, both real and fake, that he’s not the monster he once was. He DID choose Bae over the dagger–she was there for that–and he DID choose to sacrifice his own life to save everyone from his father. Those are real things she has in her pocket.
And yes, she’s got doubts about the dagger and his commitment to flying straight; remember how she glanced questioningly at him just before he changed the security tape showing Zelena’s death? But he keeps playing to prove she’s got the real dagger (because it’s benefiting him, and because he’s scared to admit the truth to her), so she doesn’t have sufficient evidence to support any suspicions she has. And she wants to believe he trusts her that much. That was the first argument she held up against the mirror–his faith in her. She needs that support, as strong willed as she can be at times. Because if he doesn’t trust her, if he hasn’t changed, then that says a lot about her, too–at least in her mind. Besides, she knows he relies on her faith in him for his strength to be a better man (he’s told her so); how could she let him down?
Well said.

Keeper of FelixNovember 3, 2014 at 6:28 pm #288819Jenna_BParticipantEM/Snow Queen has reached a new level of creepy…and I love it!! I was just thining earlier yesterday how Zelena/Oz seemed darker and after the creepiness of Z and Pan where were they going with the SQ…and then she just went and redefined creepy…did mention creepy? So yeah that was my favorite thing about the ep.
After last week and my conflicting feelings it left me with regarding Regina, I was glad to see where they went with her this week. Regina telling Robin to basically get his act together and move on from Regina was very noble, and reinforced Regina may wallow a bit but all the character growth we’ve seen in the past seasons isn’t going to waste. And she had some excellent Regina-isms, which I missed in the past few eps. Between ‘Captain Guyliner’ and ‘Storming an evil ice cream truck,’ she was absolutely on fire, and that’s one of my favorite things about her. I’m hoping a lot of the woe-is-me stuff has passed and she continues to constructively deal with this whole Robin thing.

Anna…is kind of getting a little one note for me. I really like her, and the actress’ portrayal of her, but ok, enough going off on your own – you just get into trouble – and tone down the chipper. PLEASE.

Ok, I’m pretty ‘meh’ when it comes to Belle. I can’t help it. I just can’t seem to connect with her. This episode had me rooting for her when she stood up to Rumple, then it seemed like a constant 1 step forward, 2 steps back. She went off on her own to find out why she couldn’t remember her mother’s death – yay! Strong Belle! – then Anna almost dies because Belle chooses to try and save the rock thingy before saving Anna – huh? Belle? Did you hit your head somewhere along the way?… standing up for herself in the mirror – a little funky, but again, go Belle! … turning into a weeping apologist when talking to Rumple…here we go again…although I did leave that scene far more angry with Rumple than with Belle, of course.

Belle acting like a naïve princess….it was almost worse than when Snow couldn’t figure out Zelena was the WW.I think we have to remember this is a while BEFORE SKIN DEEP .. WE have to put this episode in the correct time line / context ….Belle is suppose to be a young sheltered bookworm princess who probably had never been expected to do anything more then read, embroider etc.. … SHE probably had never done any manual or physical labor.
It took the tragedy of her mother’s death and the mistake she made with ANNA selecting trying to save the stone (something she could have gone back to the rock trolls and probably gotten another pebble) instead of saving Anna from the fall.
A person often LEARNS MORE FROM FAILURE and MAKING MISTAKES then they do from doing everything right and being successful. She made a mistake and learned what it felt like to feel like a failure and causing someone else harm. She was ashamed of her actions and made the CONSCIOUS DECISION to NOT be that way in her future. She decided she would live her life in the service of others ….protecting who she loved ( her father, her country men) She used her mother’s sacrifice as an example of how to conduct herself in the future … her goal to be heroic.

Also, it’s not just any old object she was reaching for, it was what she believed was her one and only chance to ever know the truth about how her mother died, something she was present for but couldn’t recall. Like, that’s kind of a BIG freaking deal in the grand scheme of things. So while yes it was selfish of her to put that above Anna’s life, I can’t really get too mad at her for having given in to that particular temptation.
