It was fine. It was an episode to get us to the finale, really. That’s not necessarily bad. I’m glad they set up the other land storyline early on in the episode and didn’t wait until the last minute. There are some neat ideas that will get expounded upon in the second hour. That’s good.
In other words: a fine episode that doesn’t merit much thought but doesn’t anger me by any means.
LIKED
–“When you’re upset, we follow you to Hell!”
–Magic is outside SB now because Henry took it outside in the crystal. That’s actually kinda cool.
–Seeing magic in the “real” world; we’ve waited years for something like that.
–“We’re not in SB anymore” LOL at the obvious Wizard of Oz lines.
–Blood magic tracking spell = continuity!
–Hank Harris as the “Groundskeeper”
–Sam Witweir as the “Warden”
–The Mental Hospital people know the Dark One? How….? (not a snarky question. Actual surprise and intrigue)
–Robin hid a letter inside a Robin Hood’s book. That’s hilarious.
–Emma and Regina’s conversation in Neal’s apartment. Really fantastic work from Lana and some telling lines that probably set up the theme of next season, like “I’ll never be at peace with myself;” and “I was consumed, constantly at war with my instincts.”
–“I’d rather suffer than see that pain on the faces of people I care about.” That’s how you do character progress, people.
–ALL THOSE BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY! HOW?! WHY?! (that’s really interesting! That’s really cool! More of this!)
–Henry laying into his moms about magic. I don’t agree with his rationale but at least someone had the guts to stand up to both of them.
MIXED
–Neal’s apartment. Memories. Lots of them. Except Emma doesn’t even mention any sort of memories or feelings or…anything. Mmmkay.
–Henry has to “name” everything. But Operation Mixtape? Really? Whyyyy?
–So this is….science-fiction land? Populated by Jules Verne and H.G Well and Robert Louis Stevenson characters? Is Cthulhu there by any chance?
DISLIKED
–Henry lists all the bad things that magic has caused but neglects the death of his father. PLUS: magic isn’t bad, Henry! People do bad things with magic, which is a neutral universal force. Has he not grown up at all in these past few years?
–“Fate is cruel.” Fate….the writers….whatever
–Rumple is just….nonsense at this point. He’ll go after his own grandson, Neal’s child, because Henry threatens his power. No hesitation, no qualms…just *poofs* to hurt Neal’s son. Also, randomly hurts strangers who want to make him pay for toll booths!
–Regina doesn’t say goodbye to Roland. Mmkay. But Zelena, who raped Roland’s father and who pretended to be his mother, gets to. I repeat…Mmmkay.
–All extraneous characters dealt with swiftly and quickly with no mess and no fuss. Time for a new arc, guys!
–Neal, the guy with no unfinished business, had an unfinished quest to destroy magic and kept it all in a journal. And never mentioned it. Ever. Mmkay.
–This never before seen or heard of cup is the end of magic! It’s right here! In front of everyone’s nose! In NYC! Inexplicably! MacGuffin alert! MacGuffin alert!
–What the HECK was that CGI of the transformation?
–Rumple went for the magic crystal first and not Belle. RIP Rumbelle. You used to be great.

WickedSisters Comfort!
“When you’re upset we follow you to Hell, when I’m upset I get a time out.” Preach it Regina!
Henry and Violet Road Trip….Okay then! 🙂
Mama Bear Regina!
“You heroes ruin all the fun!” Lol Zelena
Zelena hugging Roland and telling him that she’d let him visit his baby sister! And Roland kissing Robyn’s head! At least the siblings won’t be separated!
“Worried I might make you take an eternal nap on a bus bench” LOL Regina
Asylum World is definetly creepy!
“Should I be offended that he didn’t frisk me?” Zelena’s one liners!!!
Okay…Warden is very creepy…
Season 1 Feels!!!
Regina finding Robin Hood’s Book!!! And Reading the letter he wrote her…I’m emotionally unstable!
That confessional scene between Regina and Emma cut deep! Give Lana Parrilla an Emmy Award!!! Character Development at it’s best right there!
“I’d rather suffer than see that pain on the people I care about!” BEST CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND I”M IN TEARS!!!!
Jekyll/Hyde…interesting! But I wonder who is all in that world?
So Asylum World is really just Diagon Alley…okay!
Henry’s inner Mills, Swan, & Stilskin really came out in this episode!
Mixed:
So every story ever written is true in some way…okay…
Disliked:
“Henry go to my place…” No Emma…shouldn’t Regina need comfort from her son to help her in her time of bereavement.
Regina doesn’t say goodbye to Roland…I’m rioting on the inside!!!!
Rumple chose power over Belle…just like when he chose power over Baelfire….REALLY?!! Wow?!!!

L-space. There should’ve also been an orangutan. (And there’s another Author name, if I have a vote.)

Bathrooms on Star Trek.
–Henry has to “name” everything. But Operation Mixtape? Really? Whyyyy?
In a meta way, it refers to that Land of Rough Drafts and Alternate Endings and Fanfic. Not that Henry knew that. Maybe he’s this show’s Vibe.

– The moment where Gold punctures Henry’s ridiculous bravado by putting him to sleep in the library with a flick of his fingers. So much for putting up a fight.
– The moment where Hyde steals Pandora’s Box from Gold’s hotel room. One moment Gold was strutting around, the next he was crying for his wife’s box while clutching his crystal (which has rather an unfortunately suggestive shape). The contrast was hilarious.
– Jekyll and Hyde. They were rather intriguing, so I tentatively like them at this stage.
MIXED
– Gold mentioning Belle’s desire to see the world. It was nice to see someone talking about Belle as a person who has feelings and desires. Far too often, she’s treated as nothing more than a pawn in people’s games against The Dark One. It makes me sad to remember the girl who wanted to decide her own fate.
– Regina’s speech about redemption and suffering. It was good in that it confirmed that she now has a conscience. But it’s baffling how she thinks that her suffering is the result of being good. Also, it’s darn unfair how Regina is the only one who has to deal with the fallout of her dark past.
DISLIKED
– Henry’s behaviour. Stupid, selfish and reckless. He was messing with immensely powerful forces he didn’t understand. All because the people in his own family have serious issues. Besides, when he was spouting off his list of ‘bad things magic has done’, he conveniently forgot that he himself wouldn’t exist without it. Without Neverland’s magic to keep Neal young, his father would have been long gone by the time his mother was born.
– How Henry got away with his bad behaviour. His self righteousness overpowered both his mothers as it always does. For once, they should have told him that he was wrong and not given into the guilt that he always manages to invoke.
– Violet. She was nothing but a passive cheerleader. Boring.
– How little we got of Merida.
– All the macguffins we have to keep track of these days. The box, the crystal, the wand – it’s like a fantasy video game.
– The idea that Neal wanted to destroy magic. It came out of nowhere.

BUT is that not the way LIFE IS? We are often pawns to forces outside ourselves …. some good, some bad… Employers, family and relatives, friends…significant others, the bank that holds the mortgage on your home…the idiot driver on the road …Mundane but true….
I do not think we decide our own fate as much as react to the results of the decisions we make or are thrust upon us by others.

The short moment between Snowing, Regina and Zelena at Robin’s wake- Snowing were compassionate without being overpowering and it’s nice that they acknowledged the severity of what has just happened for BOTH Regina and Zelena. Also the fact the show acknowledges how much Robin meant to Regina by actually showing her coming to terms with his death instead of just seemingly ignoring it like they did with Neal in S3.
Regina calling Emma on her hypocrisy- It was about time!
Rumple- Whilst his methods and means might not be wholesome, his end goal to save Belle and his unborn child is understandable. Rumple’s only on his current course of action because Moe refused to try and TLK Belle so therefore Rumple has to find a different way to wake Belle. Also because Henry’s a brat this episode, I’m rooting for Rumple. I like how Rumple has Belle in a box sat in the passenger seat of the car.
Little John becoming Roland’s guardian- It’s only right that Robin’s best friend, who he’s know for years and who Roland is closest with, gets to care for Roland.
Zelena- Zelena has been one of the highlights of this season.
Emma admitting she’d been selfish instead of being there for Regina- For a split second it was as if we had the old Emma back.
Regina- Just in general. Wonderful acting from Lana Parilla, but I also like the fact that Regina acknowledges she’s done bad things in her past instead of it all being brushed under the carpet.
Jekyll and Hyde- I called it! I called it when the casting call came out. I had that same gut feeling I had when I said Walshe was a flying monkey. I’m really interested to see where they go with Jekyll and Hyde.
Mixed
Roland being taken back to Sherwood forest- Why would Robin want his son taken back to a place with no plumbing, no heating, and no food readily available because you have to hunt for it instead of staying in Storybrooke where you can have all of the above? Has Roland been forced to live in Storybrooke forest all this time?
I liked that they gave an explanation for why Neal was in New York but the explanation was crap. We saw no hint of it with Neal at all.
So if the “heroes” know that Rumple’s doing what he’s doing to wake Belle, then why are they so against him instead of trying to help him find a safer way? Do they really care that little about Belle that they’re willing to leave her trapped in a sleeping curse forever?
Disliked
The Henry/Violet relationship- They’re too young for it to be believable.
Emma and Hook outside Granny’s- It’s strongly implied they had sex due to the way they were making out last episode, the “fade to black” and the fact the sky has gone from light to dark in the space of the funeral and the wake. Unfortunately this also implies they had sex AT the funeral (hopefully they had the decency NOT to do it on the coffin, even though that would’ve been the nearest flat surface that wasn’t cold wet ground since it had been raining). Whilst that is all conjecture, albeit plausible especially with how Emma is written nowadays, it annoys me that Emma brought Hook all the way to Granny’s, tell him that she needs to talk to Regina about his return because of how difficult it was going to be for her, then was intending just to go “come on in Hook”. Could Emma not give Regina ONE day to process Robin’s death before making everything about her and Hook again? Nobody would begrudge Emma for waiting until the day AFTER the funeral before saying anything so as not to upset Regina more than she already was. It’s just Emma has become really insensitive to the feelings of others because she’s too wrapped up in everything being about herself and Hook.
Henry- I hate when Henry gets all high and mighty, he steals money from Rumple yet can’t be bothered to give him the time of day any other time. In fact the only time Henry has ever spent time with Rumple is because he wanted something never because Rumple was his “grandpa”.
Henry in Gold’s shop- It was so convenient that everything Henry needed to make his point was sat on shelves right next to each other even though half of it being on display wouldn’t make sense like the sleeping curse needle. Also why was the pen and paper just waiting in Rumple’s shop for Henry to write in? If Henry put it there, did he set it out like that just so he could impress Violet?
Henry’s hypocrisy- “Magic is very bad so I’m going to use magic to get what I want”
Henry’s selfishness- He’s going to potentially destroy the town just because he’s having a temper tantrum like a petulant child.
Everything about Henry this episode- He’s a brat and whilst he may have just gotten away with it in season 2 because of how cute he was, he’s a lot less cute now, he’s older and therefore should know better.
All magic comes with a price!
