General thoughts: I didn’t hate it, so it exceeded expectations right there.
Likes:
– The EQ. Highlight in this episode was her doing a Southern accent. I’m going to miss her so much when she’s gone!
Mixed:
– Jasmine and Aladdin. Their relationship is very confusing. It’s really coming across as Jasmine wanting something from him rather than anything romantic at this point.
– Golden Queen…I didn’t put this under ‘Dislikes’ because I’m so confused. WHY? Is there a point to this? Did Belle see? Is it just to show the EQ using her sexuality as a means of power? If so, get over it A&E – this trope about evil, hyper-sexualised females is from the Dark Ages and pretty darn annoying.
– Aladdin being happy to steal from people’s wallets, yet blaming himself for what happened to Agrabah when he doesn’t even know what happened to Agrabah! It’s hard to nail down what kind of person he is exactly.
Dislikes:
– Henry was flightier about his feelings for Hook this episode than he is with his feelings about magic. The EQ turned him against Hook awfully fast. As much as I liked that scene, I think it would have made sense for Henry to give Hook a chance to explain. Unless of course, he really disliked him. That would have been fine too, except that he seemingly forgave Hook everything and risked his life for him after hearing about how Hook killed his dad.
– How Nemo tried to recruit Hook after the pirate nearly murdered him.
– The harpoon and key macguffins.
– Aladdin’s accent. It’s really starting to grate now. Half the time I can’t understand what he’s saying, and the other half he reminds me of Will which is really distracting. Besides, it is SO incongruous to have a character from the Arabian Nights speaking in a cockney accent.
– Hook and Liam getting to resolve their problems so neatly and easily, when the process is so drawn out and painful for other characters on the show.
– Emma’s dress looked weird and out of character. They usually have her in a dress when they’re trying to convey that she’s not being herself in some way. As for the signifance of the red – could that be the Saviour’s symbolic colour? Emma wears the red jacket when she’s readying for action, and she was wearing it when she broke the dark curse. Regina was also wearing red when she broke the dark curse. Aladdin had his red hat last episode, and this episode he was wearing a red shirt. So…is Emma not being true to herself in some way by choosing to remain the Saviour?

That’s a strong word to curse with. Might not mean much to some, but it’s my savior’s name.
You’re right, I apologize. I’ll change it in my post. It was a live reaction to what I was seeing. Usually I’m better than that and catch it before I post. Sorry 🙁

Yes. A page back I said that I didn’t care about the Jaladdin romance and this is a big part of it; it doesn’t feel at all romantic. It feels like Jasmine is trying to get Aladdin to help her and nothing beyond that. They only romance I read into it is because of the Disney stuff.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 31, 2016 at 10:15 am #329550thedarkonedearieParticipantOk so this was better than last week’s and I’m somewhat surprised at how much better it was than I thought it would be. Normally Hook’s episodes have been blah for me lately but I enjoyed this one for the most part. Still had many many flaws but better than last week.
Overall: 6.5/10
Liked:
– Henry and Hook getting screen time together. This was so needed.
– Hook putting Henry before him.
– Henry protecting Emma when he found out Hook kept the shears. Again, these two needed to bond for a bit and they devoted an entire episode to it, not just a scene, which I appreciated.
– The CGI actually looked good. The sub looked good.
– EQ is amazing per usual.
– Regina poofing in front of her family to protect them. They have come a long way and that family dynamic is an important one for the show to highlight.
– They actually went back to the Liam storyline. Props for that. Did not see that coming.
– Emma found out about the shears quite fast and I appreciate that. This did not linger like the whole Emma not telling her family about her vision did.
Mixed:
– EQ and Rumple kiss. Listen, I get she wants something from him and needs him to take Snow’s heart but these two never had this relationship before and it just doesn’t feel right on screen. At least Belle didn’t have to see it.
– How did Regina get the shears? Who does she know under the sea still? Ursula?
– Rumple wants to use the shears on Belle? Oh good God. Poor Belle.
– So Agrabah is gone? A lost city? Like what?
– Love the characters but I don’t like them right now on OUAT. I literally just do not care about Jasmine and Aladdin. It makes me feel like their story won’t be prevalent until the second half but they just couldn’t wait til then to bring them into the fold so right now they’re just useless until they are needed.
Disliked:
– How on Earth did The Nautilus get to storybrooke? Are we supposed to believe they came over from the Land of Untold Stories? If so, was the sub just chilling under water this whole time?
– How is Nemo alive? He was stabbed in the past. How was he found in the woods of storybrooke in the present needing surgery?
– Why can’t the EQ just take Snow’s heart herself? We already know she took the Count’s heart to manipulate him. Why is Snow’s any different? Maybe she can take the heart but can’t actually crush it or kill anybody? This could be a Man in Black from Lost situation which I’d like but there needs to be some clarity soon.
– The EQ, while amazing, has done literally nothing for 6 episodes. Hopefully this changes.
– So when was Hook in NL? This timeline makes zero sense to me. And how did Hook escape the sub?
The plot needs to start moving here. We have a hit a lull and this needs to be fixed. I’m enjoying the episodes but there are so many questions and I feel like the story is getting a little lost. It still does feel like season 1 but it’s getting a little messy.

I THINK the reason they are having EQ & R scenes is two fold…. 1/ The show EQ will do anything to get what she wants especially since the good/Regina was cleaved from her. She can now run amuck. 2/ By showing Gold resisting EQ it shows he loves Belle … his love is stalwart. I have not witnessed any response from Gold other than repugnance. I think A&E are trying to show GOLD in a better light but are having a hard time coming up with ideas …. they can not show him doing good deeds as that would be against character.

Yes perhaps. However I didn’t see Rumple shying away from kissing her. He seemed to enjoy it quite a bit.
October 31, 2016 at 11:14 am #329567nevermoreParticipantMeh. This wasn’t an awful episode, and a lot of individual scenes and micro-plot points were actually surprisingly good and consistent with some of the show’s theme. But I’m still not getting the impression that any of this is coming together in any sort of coherent way.

Liked:
I didn’t hate Hook for once. He’s been given an actually solid redemption arc this season, and his relationship with Henry and other characters is being fleshed out in a much more convincing way. That being said, there’s something that I feel a bit queasy about in here (more in dislikes).
EQ is always a delight. But I also like Regina in this episode — she’s got a good dose of sass despite the EQ extraction
I actually enjoyed Nemo’s story, and thought the actor did a great job.
Mixed:
Something is so deeply odd about the Jasmine/Aladdin story. I’m actually thinking now that maybe Jasmine, not Aladdin, is Jafar. The way she’s telling the story — about how Agrabah is gone — I don’t know, something’s not gelling here. If Jafar wanted to rule over Agrabah, it makes no sense that he would obliterate it into oblivion. Unless he somehow teleported it somewhere else? In any case, something in that relationship is sketchy. Clearly, Jasmine wants to get Aladdin to do something, or needs him for something, but it’s unclear what.
Disliked:
Seriously, Adam and Eddy? I retract my previous diagnosis that this show is written by toddlers. Toddlers aren’t that afraid of girls. This is a show written by 12 year old boys in a 40 year old man suit. At this point, I don’t know where the message is:
a) Evil women use their sexuality to further their devious and evil plans, and therefore are evil. OR
b) Women who use their sexuality in obvious ways must be evil.
At this point, I can’t think of a single evil female character on this show who wasn’t very obviously sexual or sexualized. EQ, Cruella, Zelena are outright rapey. Maleficient and even the Blind Witch were very obviously sexualized (until Maleficient mommyfied). The only redemptive part of this is that I’m going to assume that this proves Blue Fairy is shady.
Meanwhile, the guy who was cracking rape jokes a few seasons ago gets a protracted redemption arc. Really, A&E? That’s what you call a feminist show? If anyone needs me, I’ll be over there, dusting off my Torquemada outfit for the next witch burning. #nastywoman
I’m going to continue my interpretation of the great social critique embedded in the relationship between OUAT and the MacGuffin. After their brilliant reflection on the mutual interdependencies between humans and nature exemplified in the quest for the mind altering mushroom, and the ways in which man-becomes-nature captured was by the arborescence of Merlin and whichever dwarf it was… After the more recent reflection of humans’ ambivalence towards technology, captured in the threat posed by Zeus’s lightning bolt (at once a metaphor for electricity and nuclear fusion) to obliterate the very essence of humanity… We have come to a new philosophical quandary, brought to you by Adam and Eddy and co. I can’t yet decide whether we’re back to the environmental problem (the issue of what to prune next), or whether this is more of a reflection on run-away capitalism trying to fleece everyone and everything. Or is it about the ways in which outward appearances — symbolized by the haircut, and the professional “shears” (golden no less) — are vacuous when they don’t reflect deeper inner peace. Stay tuned.

So because of bad past actions, Hook isn’t allowed to get redemption because he’s male? What about all the bad stuff Rumple has done? We constantly forgive him. What about the EQ/Regina? We forgave her.

No, you misunderstand me. Women who are overtly sexualized do not get much of a pass on this show. Men who are (Hook) do. It’s not about good or bad action, it’s about the connection between sexuality and moral bankruptcy, and how that cuts in a very particular way along gender lines. As to Regina, you will notice that the more redeemed she is, the more demure she becomes. This isn’t an accident, I don’t think.
Edited to add: this comment is not an anti-Hook rant, so please do not interpret it this way. It’s an anti-medieval gender ideology rant. Hence the Torquemada reference.
October 31, 2016 at 3:09 pm #329587GrimmsisterParticipantHmm ! This episode was a bit boring for me. Not very interested in Hook. But the Nautilus and the underwater visuals were really nice. I was underwhelmed with Nemo. I was expecting him to be kind of ambiguous.. but he seemed so nice and friendly…
But the Evil Queen scenes were awsome, as always, and they saved the episode for me.
I actually like that EQ is still after Snows heart and that this is her main motivation.. though it would be great if they would bring more into it too. Like maybe she needs it for something other than just to kill Snow for her decades old revenge thirst.
Rumple and EQ scenes had sparks and lots of tension… loved it. The last scene in Gold’s shop was the best in the episode.
