March 1, 2015 at 9:15 pm #297188RumplesGirlKeymasterFirst and foremost, welcome back everyone! I hope you had a good hiatus.
Ok, so I thought this episode was….okay. There was a lot of straight up silly and some really horrible dialogue (no one must know what happened between us in the EF = everyone is going to find out what happened between you in the EF. Puhlease). But it was better than 4A premiere which was too focused on characters I didn’t care about. There were some funny moments and some moments where Bobby really got to shine.
LIKED
–I thought Chernabog’s CGI was well done. Loved the eyes
–Rumple eating Ramen in a robe. Sad and pathetic. Tugged at the proverbial heartstrings
–Is there a dwarf named Evily?
–Blue pointing out that the Author and the Sorcerer are not one and the same. Good to know.
–Cruella’s snark is fun. As is her half unhinged demeanour
MIXED
–The flashbacks. On the one hand, I’m glad it tied into Rumple getting the Curse because I was worried that they were about to retcon half the show. But there was a lot of straight up stupid here: Ursula was needed because tentacles. Cruella’s green magic breath (UGH).
–The Belle/Hook stuff. I’m glad Belle was having that conversation but I cannot abide her having it with a man who once beat her, shot her and tried to murder the man she loves. Especially when he’s never given even her any sort of genuine, non snarky apology for actually hurting her. Putting the abused and the abuser in the same room and expecting them to bond when there has been no mea culpa leaves a very sour taste in my mouth
–Snow and Charming and Urusla and Cruella. Bad dialogue but admittedly an interesting turn
DISLIKED
–Does Henry exist on this show anymore? I’m confused
-Stroybrooke is impossible to get into. UNLESS YOU CALL FIRST. Good lord. That was the single worst plot device…I mean, that tops them ALL. Phone call + open scroll = entrance. I cannot with that.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 1, 2015 at 10:09 pm #297206WickedRegalParticipantI basically liked all the episode…it was pretty great to me.

March 1, 2015 at 11:40 pm #297225MatthewPaulModeratorOverall, it was a decent opener for this half of the Season. I do agree it was better than the Season premiere, since this focused more on the core characters and mythology of the show.
Liked
– Chernabog!
– The flashback with Rumple and the Queens of Darkness tying in with the Dark Curse. Makes sense that would be what Rumple was after, and it organically connects to the show’s pre-existing mythology. As for the obstacles, I think honestly Rumple could have probably overcome those on his own, and he really just needed the Queens of Darkness there as bait to escape Chernabog.
– Rumple acting like a free-loader in Ursula’s apartment, complete with the snark between the two. Cruella ordering take out on their drive to Storybrooke also got a chuckle out of me.
– Finding out more about the author and sorcerer from Blue.
– I like the idea of having Ursula and Cruella deceive everyone into thinking that they want to turn over a new leaf. So this doesn’t mean they’re there to be “New Big Bads, and the entire town has to stop them for the entire story arc”, at least not for the time being.
– The twist that Emma was Chernabog’s target, and not Regina. This could be interesting.Mixed
– Snow and Charming being shady about some dark secret concerning them and the Queens of Darkness. I like the idea that the Heroes might not be as pure as we thought, but something about this feels out of left field. Will expand more on my thoughts once we learn what said secret is.Disliked
– I agree with RG that some of the dialogue was clunky.
– Rumple and the Queens of Darkness got into Storybrooke way too easily. I get that they need to get them into town somehow, but the same scroll the Sorcerer gave Ingrid somehow lets just anybody enter?March 2, 2015 at 1:53 am #297238PheeParticipantMaybe it’s because I had really low expectations, but this ep was more watchable than I’d been anticipating.
I enjoyed the opening sequence in SB. The clock ticking over from 8:15, Henry in school, being taught by Snow, a lesson about birds. Regina’s in the Mayor’s office, Emma has her Sheriff badge. Those scenes had some real S1 charm about them.
Liked seeing Chernabog. I liked the design of him over all, and he came across as being suitably creepy. His sizing seemed inconsistent, but I can overlook that relatively easily. What’s harder to overlook is that NO ONE saw the massive cloud of black smoke ooze from the box and form into a massive demon in the sky right behind where they were standing? Really?! I’m kinda disappointed by how quickly they dispatched with him, but at least he did get to be a threat for a whole ep. When that sneak peek came out, many of us had worried that that one scene would be his only appearance, so it was nice to see him several times.
Nitpick: They made a big deal about having to get the translation for an incantation…then when Regina cast the spell, she didn’t say a single word.
Belle still being on the verge of bawling her eyes out when talking about Rumple, YES GOOD, actual lasting emotional impact from the emotional trauma that a character has endured! That’s a rare thing for this show, so I appreciated it!
Don’t like Belle working closely with Hook. I guess we’re supposed to think that during the missing 6 weeks he’s offered up a genuine apology? But given that all we’ve seen was the “apology” from 4A, it just does not sit well with me that Belle’s cooperating with someone who has abused her and shown no genuine remorse. I think that’s a poor message for the show to be sending. At least she made the comment about him still having his temper, and she jumped when he suddenly smashed the board over. That reaction from Belle was fitting given the history between these two characters. But at the same time, the fact that she DID react that way makes it unbelievable that she’d happily be left alone with him, and be happily willing to work with him.
I’m glad they referenced that people are aware that Hook was involved in putting the Apprentice in the Hat too. I appreciate that Hook is beating himself up about it, because he’s NOT completely blameless in the things he’s done. It bugs me that other people, including Belle of all people, are trying to tell him not to be so hard on himself because it’s really not his fault. Let him be held accountable for the crap he’s done! Regina’s had to, so why does Hook just get a free pass?
Rumple and the QoD was odd for me, because I didn’t get much from their interactions in the flashbacks, but I really enjoyed their banter in present day. Like, I was actually genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed scenes with Rumple, Ursula and Cruella. Was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed Cruella, but again, I liked her more in present day than in flashbacks. Same goes for Ursula. It’s weird because the characters are the same in both timelines, so I can’t really explain why they felt different to me in the present day scenes.
The scene of Rumple crossing over the line, going from hobbling with his walking stick to strutting like a boss in the space of a single pace was very effective.
Nitpick: Why did Cruella know that Maleficent was “dead”? She was still very much alive right up until when the Curse was cast, and only “died” after getting to SB, and Cruella has had no knowledge of things that happened in SB.
I’m intrigued by Snowing confronting Ursula and Cruella, but at the same time am wary that whatever that history ends up being, will feel like a retcon of some sort.
The whole thing with the Book Author just bugs me, because from everything we’ve seen, the Book documents what has already happened, it doesn’t tell the future, so the whole thing about finding the Author so they can write a new ending MAKES NOT A LICK OF SENSE.

FAVOURITE MOMENTS
-Rumple and computers haha
-All scenes with Cruella De Vil. I don’t like the idea of the character being on the show, but the actress is a delight to watch.
-Seeing everyone go about their daily routines, trouble-free.
-Smooth story-telling overall.
LEAST FAVOURITE MOMENTS
-Wasted opportunity 1: Hook didn’t apologise to Belle while they were having a heart to heart in the library.
-Wasted opportunity 2: Chernabog was puny and not very intelligent in both SB and Mist Haven. He also seemed to be just a cameo monster. It would have been more interesting to have him as the ultimate evil.
The perspective of him on the clock tower vs flying about near Emma and Regina was terrible (source: an Art Director…my husband! And you don’t need to be a professional designer to notice, it was that bad).
-Ursula/the actress does not have enough screen presence/charisma.
-Regina burning MM’s bird picture in the office. That was MM’s property, and a painting she was proud of. Couldn’t she just have handed it back to her, politely and respectfully?
-What a lot of effort to get that incantation translated, only for Regina to silently wave the dagger about over the hat box. So confused.
PLOT HOLE:
-Unless Rumple has hacking skills, it is impossible for him to pose an Oxford University professor. Staff at universities always use their university email address which shows clearly where they work (for example, [email protected]). There is no way Rumple could have faked this kind of email address to convince Belle that he was an OU professor, seeing as we have never explicitly seen him with this kind of computer skills.
OVERALL GRADE.
If I hadn’t watched seasons 1-4a, or Fantasia I would have given this a 9/10, due to the smooth story-telling. (a point would have been lost on CGI). But because I have watched both, and because of my knowledge of UK universities, I felt disappointed over wasted opportunities and plot hole:
6/10.

RIGHT?! That bugged me as well. She just waved the dagger over the box and POOF. I mean, anyone could have done that…?

I don’t know why a Professor at Oxford being able to read a magical language about hats and darkness didn’t raise ALL THE FLAGS for Belle. I mean, of course that’s Rumple. It makes no sense for someone from our world to be able to translate a language from another world that quickly.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 2, 2015 at 8:10 am #297258TheWatcherParticipantYeah so I thought this episode was surprisingly great. Much better than I was expecting:
LIKED:
– Cruella in all her sassy snarky glory. Victoria Smurfit is a great actress for the one character who I would have thought would not have heled up in a room with Maleficent and Ursula. But she is just crazy awesome!
– Blue Fairy revealing the Author and Sorcerer are different. Not just different. VERY different. The way she delivered the lines was very intriguing.
– Cruella threatening Rumpel. I would have done the same.
– The humor of this episode was just hilarious 😛 too many things to count that made me giggle. “Let’s go buckle some swash” 😛
– Maleficent was great! Kristin Van Straten is killing the role! All I could hear was Pam when she delivering her lines to Chernabog. “We had a deal, witches!” “I hope you choke on my bones!” “I’ll never get the smell of fish out of this dress” lol Maleficent and Pam need to have a crossover episode. OH MY GOD! I would love them meet. I wonder what Pam would say to meting the mistress of all evil:
-Chernabog. I like him and dislike him
-The “double cluck” scene :3 Have a cluckity cluck cluck day is going to be my thing for today.
– Chernabog being defeated. I have ALWAYS wondered what would happen to a magical creature that went over the town line. Now we know :3DISLIKE:
– The reasons why Rump needed the Queens. Okay, I can understand Cruella’s mind trick on the bugs but it would have made more sense if he needed her to use it on Chernabog. And then wih Ursula? He basically need her to pick up something -_- like we’ve seen Rump move things with his mind, come on. Also, why didn’t the Queens just poof away from Chernabog?
-Plot device scroll. But atleast…it makes sense I suppose.
-Chernabog. I liked and both dislike him.-Regina being darker than Maleficent? Yeah, no. Don’t like it.
All in all, I loved this episode.
